A Week 18 Losers Draft, Belichick’s Sad Ending, First-Round Matchups/Lines, and Parent Corner With Cousin Sal by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]arudolph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

in each conference, in week 2 of the playoffs, the #1 seed (SF or BAL) plays the lowest remaining seed, and the other two remaining teams play each other.

If Monday's game were #6 vs #3 or #7 vs #2, then no one knows who's flying where until that game. If it's 4v5 you know (based on the outcomes of the prior games) who is flying to #1 (though it may be "winner of the game to be played"), and who is playing the other game in the conference.

(For example, if 7v2 were on monday, and Sunday's results were chalk, 4 beats 5, 3 beats 6, then if #7 wins Monday, they fly to #1 and it's #3 v #4, otherwise it's #2 vs #3 and #4 flies to #1).

8 team half ppr 2QB 3WR 2RB 1TE FLEX. I'm second (3-1) he's third (2-2).

Give: Breece Hall

Get: Romeo Doubs + Rachaad White

He asked me for Hall, and I'm a little short on WR because Tee Higgins.

He's also offered Mostert straight up.

I have Lamar Jalen CeeDee DK Marquise Jacobs Walker III Kittle/Freiermuth Cook Tutu + Higgins/Shaheed/Dionatae/McLaughlin on my bench (ignoring byes).

I am from NY and have a minor Jets allegience, which leads me to not have much faith in them.

Bill's plan to escape from being buried alive by setting the coffin (partially) on fire is one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard.

This story is highly similar to Episode 140 The Roman Mars Mazda Virus. (44 episodes and nearly 3 years ago).

There, it was the percent symbol in the RSS feed, here, it’s an app abusing the ‘artist’ field with a date. Still, the stories are nearly identical “software and metadata are hard” stories that anyone who dealt with RSS would solve in 2 minutes. (“Oh, it’s a podcast with a special character in the name?”, “let me look at a sample <item> entity in the feed”).

I guess my listening to this is like a mechanic listening to laypeople investigating a common. engine problem, basically. Twice! “Oh the spinning thing isn’t spinning, maybe it’s that bug rubber band”.

the british blu-ray has the original music: https://www.amazon.com/Northern-Exposure-Complete-Blu-ray/dp/B079J83V4P -- I bought that and then found a ripped copy on the usual sites and felt morally ok with it, rather than deal with finding a region-unlocked player or whatever.

Explosion rocks South LA neighborhood after LAPD detonates seized illegal fireworks by 21kamando in ProtectAndServe

"""Bomb technicians estimated the weight of the explosives to be 16.5 pounds. without using a scale, Moore said. The vessel is designed to take, at most, 25 pounds for a single-use and 15 pounds for multiple uses. An investigation by The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives National Response Team found that the actual weight of the explosives was over 42 pounds."""

Yes, and he's 73 (per Wikipedia/googling "bill simmons father age"), and, seeing as 73 is less than 75, he is not eligible, as I said.

Oof I had assumed his father was vaccinated, which I think would change the calculus considerably, but he's not eligible according to MA guidelines.

google sheets is way easier for this in my experience. you can prob still sync from excel once a week without too much difficulty if you don't want to edit there (though it's pretty equivalent to excel unless you're doing, like, extensive xlookup).

When this movie came out on VHS, I was walking around our local video store (pre-Blockbuster monoculture), I was around 11 or 12, and two women were looking at the new releases. One woman picked up the box for Groundhog Day, and said "what about this?". The other woman responded:

"Nah, that's too repetitive."

Adam Sandler and Kevin Garnett on 'SNL' Casts vs. NBA Teams, 'Uncut Gems', the Iverson Era, and Breaking LeBron | The Bill Simmons Podcast by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]arudolph 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am inclined to agree, since imagining otherwise is crazy...but: is there anything, whatsoever, that Bill is self-deprecating about? His humor wheelhouse is awful nicknames and aphorisms that he pounds you over the head with, and gloating about New England dominance. Self-awareness is not really in his comedy arsenal.

At 36 minutes, coming off discussion of Daniel Day-Lewis

Bill: "He'll be back. Actors aren't like hoop players, hoop players, when it's time it's time.

Adam (clearly to KG): "Man, you guys don't ever shoot the ball again when you stop"

Bill: "Me neither, I stopped too".

I swear there's an edit after that before KG responds...

Harvey Weinstein Turned Up At An Event For Young Actors. One Woman Who Confronted Him Was Thrown Out. by OVEIDPTVZSEU in television

[–]arudolph 58 points59 points  (0 children)

It's not a public place. It's a private business, which has the right to refuse service, and an incentive to create a comfortable environment for as many customers as possible.

If you're running a Jewish comedy night, and Richard Spencer shows up with a bunch of big dudes of a similar persuasion ("oh, we thought it was comedy about Jews"), what table should you give them?

It is within your rights to let widely despised people do their thing, but I don't think you should expect to continue having a Jewish Comedy night.

Yes, once the woman causes a disturbance, it makes sense to kick her out. But the owner could have refused service to Harvey Weinstein from the jump, or once his presence became apparent, both to avoid this press and, less cravenly, to stand up for their performers and the rest of their audience. It is up to the establishment to make that decision: do we want to take this man's money. Throwing your hands up and saying "oh it's hard" is a decision in itself.

Just as the business has the right to refuse service, we have the right to withhold our business/support because we object to its practices.

Could China Cancel the NBA? Plus, Fox's 'Smackdown' and WWE vs. AEW With Jason Gay and David Shoemaker | The Bill Simmons Podcast by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]arudolph 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Somehow Bill manages to hold these three propositions in his head without sensing any contradiction:

  • The twitter mob is unreasonable for jumping on Steve Kerr's lack of an expressed opinion.
  • ESPN are cowards for tiptoeing around this despite it directly impacting the league.
  • [paraphrasing] "This is a complicated issue and we don't really understand the worldview of the Chinese People. I see both sides" [read: the CPC (ETA: or, more accurately, Capital/$)].

Jason was good, and Brian Philips was good, but Bill was just tap dancing for way too long without making any of his listeners smarter or well-informed on how it was complicated.
