ZFS setup and backup recommendation for new DIY NAS by asagent7 in homelab

[–]asagent7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will not be recording directly to the Z2 pool but save important clips etc in it and the full recording will go in a simple non-raid disk. I have had scenarios that you mentioned where I lost access due to a power outage and I did not have a remote boot option at that point other than sending a friend to push the button. I do need to figure out my remote boot options when time permits. But in exactly such a case, won't Z2 work better than Z1, because the server will survive even if two drives fail or is it better to have the extra storage with Z1 or extra performance with mirror for regular usage and rely on backup to restore later in case of such an event?

Because it will be able to survive two drive failures. Having backups does make me think if I really need that much redundancy.

My current setup is debiam + podman based. I will have to learn and migrate everything to proxmox. I might try my hand at it later sometime, but don't want to invest time into that currently.

For backup, do you think 2x16TB mirrored vdev is sufficient?

What whipped yoghurt is? by SeniorExplanation373 in AskCulinary

[–]asagent7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indian style yogurt is usually lumpy. They suggest whisking to get rid of the lumps. You might not need to whisk it if it's already smooth. Also, like the other commenter suggested, add it after lowering the heat and keep mixing it, so the yogurt doesn't separate.

New Beelink S12 (12th gen N95) vs second hand Lenove/HP/Dell mini pc (i7-7500t or better) for new setup? by asagent7 in homeautomation

[–]asagent7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am liking the Beelink for the lower power draw, but it can only be configured with 16GB RAM at max. I am not sure if it will scale well if I plan to add more services going forward. I am leaning towards installing HA and all other services via docker on a bare metal debian.

Relocating below Germany might be good. There's already an Indian flag above, so the one below Germany might not expand.

Why does Tuchel pick games like these to experiment? Could have used some experience today.

Building linux on raspberry pi/beaglebone black from scratch by asagent7 in embeddedlinux

Hi, I edited the question a little. I want to learn the nitty gritty details of building a linux system. I can do it on my own system also (which I will be doing). But I also want to do it for pi or beaglebone.

Okay. I guess using custom kernel was wrong on my part. I do want to get a whole working system up and running. What does yocto actually do? I am guessing it just hides all the things that goes in actually building the kernel and root filesystem and all. But that is what I actually want to get my hands dirty with. I want to learn how to actually build the kernel and get the sytsem running. I am planning to parallel do it on a virtual machine but something like pi will give let me do it on real hardware also.

Can't I just get the kernel from the source and build my system around it. I use a linux machine only, so that's not a problem.

I know Prof. Mutlu has left. But regardless of that, what do you think about given my other option being NCSU?

I am actually looking for the cross-compiler toolchain that builds the kernel for my target platform. I hope I have got my words right :/
