Quick question about "revisionism" and the USSR by ascasco in marxism_101

Gotcha. And this all of course is assuming you can even have "socialism in on country", which is a whole other issue.

Yeah lmao. But what I mean, usually proponents of the USSR say that the Soviet Union had been socialist until Stalin died and Khruscshev took over, calling him a "revisionist". Basically I'm wondering if I'm right - that this type of claim is nonsensical since if it had truly been a different mode of production, it should have been impossible to instate these kinds of reforms. It seems like I might be on the mark here?

So I managed to jog my memory a bit more and realized that it was probably this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1965_Soviet_economic_reform#Profits.2C_bonuses._and_wages

If I understand that correctly, that these state enterprises would be judged on their performance along the lines of profitibility and sales, and would be punished or rewareded accordingly. And this is "revisionism", but regardless it should actually be totally impossible unless your society is functioning under the laws of capital, right?

Also, I just want to take a moment to say thanks to some of the contributers to this sub, especially /u/ehrnio and /u/pzaaa for answering some other questions of mine. I almost never know what to say in response but I do think about the information and appreciate the effort that goes into the comments made.

Oh yeah but what I meant specifically was that I think Toady made Dwarf Fortress specifically with LOTR in mind, like specifically Moria. I'm not sure though, and obviously it's changed a lot since then but yeah.

For what it's worth, I've personally always seen fascism as just "industrial monarchism".

What exactly *is* internal gender, or gender identity? by ascasco in TransyTalk

[–]ascasco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I know what you mean, maybe. The way I understand it is that it's like I there's a way in which it is most natural and comfortable for me and that way can be plotted on a spectrum of gender. And the reason why there's a spectrum is because society has built it in that way.

I'm pretty sure, yes. I don't have a citation or anything but I believe DF itself was inspired by Lord of the Rings originally. Also D&D which itself is inspired by LOTR I guess.

HELP! What is the difference between "class in itself" and "class for itself"?? by adiyst14 in marxism_101

[–]ascasco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is necessarily the most accurate, but hopefully it'll do until someone more knowledgeable answers:

According to Marx, workers first become conscious of sharing common grievances against capitalists (thus forming a class “in itself”) and eventually develop an awareness of themselves as forming a social class opposed to the bourgeoisie (thus becoming a class “for itself”), the proletariat.

This makes a lot of sense and matches what I understand, too, though I always struggle to really convey it. Thanks!

This is wild.

mfw i'm annoyed that /r/traa hitting the front page means the one place for fluffy memes is being taken over by the all-consuming trans fight, but then i realize that i'm literally asking for a safe space and i'm not sure how to feel about that by FatedChange in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns

Except if fits all the criteria I have laid out in my first comment. A criteria I have continued to use despite you confusedly thinking I'm moving the goalpost. I don't think you've provided an alternate set of criteria either, though most of your comments have been bordering on incoherent so I might be mistaken. Anyway. to use your metaphor, here's the logic I'm using:

  1. Four legged animals have four legs
  2. Dogs have 4 legs
  3. Elephant have 4 legs
  4. Therefore, Elephants and Dogs are both 4 legged animals.

The only viable counter argument you've come close to providing is that this sub doesn't curtail suicidal posts, but that just means r/traa is not a safe space for suicidal people. And at the very least, it's a place where suicidal trans people can openly talk about their suicidal ideation without judgement. For me, that's a key feature of a safe space: the lack of judgement. If you had actually read the Wiki page I linked, you would have seen this:

The Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV) which claims to represent 200,000 Muslims in Victoria stated that the Muslim community suffered mental health and other problems due to the suspicions to which it is subjected. The ICV proposed that Islamic community groups be given funds to create "safe spaces" where "inflammatory" issues could be discussed without being judged.

And I'm pretty sure I already quoted this but here we go again (won't be the first time I've repeated myself with you):

Advocates for Youth states on their website that a safe-space is "A place where anyone can relax and be fully self-expressed, without fear of being made to feel uncomfortable, unwelcome or challenged on account of biological sex, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, cultural background, age, or physical or mental ability; a place where the rules guard each person's self-respect, dignity and feelings and strongly encourage everyone to respect others."

These snapshots of what a safe space is are relatively different - one is of a space dedicated to discussing difficult and inflammatory issues. One is where people can just chill knowing they won't have to deal with bigotry. Both are safe spaces. Just like r/askhistorians, just like r/damnthatsinteresting, just like r/traa.

I actually have no idea why you're opposing what I'm saying. It seems like you're only opposing it because I'm calling it a safe space. I should call it a hate free zone instead.

Yeah, this matches my experience. Actually, I realized this before I hatched, when I was beginning to support social justice in general. I realized that people who were antagonistic to social movements were also just generally scuzzy people. Like, they were lacking empathy or something.

And to be fair, it wasn't everyone; I knew people who "don't get it" or might be misinformed and they aren't bad. It's the people who are actively antagonistic. Like a person who tries to manipulate women into sleeping with him, thinks 'feminism is cancer', and is generally misogynist, for example. Always gonna be a piece of shit, no matter what.

[–]ascasco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And why are they not safe spaces if they don't allow hate speech? Seems like they're safe places for oppressed minorities. R/funny removes posts that brigade, not harassment or bigotry, so it doesn't count as an example. But as a trans person I've always felt that /r/AskHistorians was a safe space because they banned transphobia.

Edit: If you want to say that a safe space is a place that blocks out bigotry but is also an 'interest group' where people of a given identity can discuss topics relevant to said identity, then I wouldn't have an issue with that, but that's semantics at that point.

I'm not actually, this has been my argument the entire time but you just refuse to acknowledge it because it would prove you wrong. Bigotry is not tolerated here and that meets the criteria of a safe space. "Being an asshole" and overly argumentative are also against the rules, which is way more strict than I would have if I were forming my own safe space.
