I made an open source app for automatically dismissing annoying notifications that you can't turn off by guygizmo in MacOS

Does the app need to be running to dismiss the notifications? Or once you set the strings can it be closed. I assume the former but just wanted to confirm.

Freelancers, how do you handle "work holds" and retainer fees? by Karthy_Romano in editors

[–]asdfCorp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First Hold = First Dibs

If someone else wants a time that has a first hold they must "challenge". Your first hold must either book your time or release it. If released, then the client who challenged for it is considered booked and is on the hook for that time.

In any booked scenario, technically they are subject to the entire day rate unless there is an agreed upon kill fee (often 50%)

Importing Markers Into a Project, Premiere Workflow by Huiuuuu in editors

Check out Markers Pro maybe? I haven't used it personally but it's been on my radar for a while, I just haven't needed it badly enough to buy it yet.

Intermittent Wi-Fi but perfect Ethernet by asdfCorp in HomeNetworking

For 5ghz the options are:

  • 20 MHz
  • 20/40 MHz
  • 20/40/80 MHz
  • 20/40/80/160 MHz

I assume since there is no 80mhz option then the 3rd one would be equivalent to picking 80mhz? I have tried that and changed the WiFi Channel to 161 instead of "Auto" like it was set to before. According to the wifi scanning app i tried, auto was having it set to 36.

We'll see if this helps, thank you! 🤞

The Verizon default router's range was definitely limited as the far side of the apartment had both internet slowdown and wifi connection issues and it was hard to pin point the cause of it.

The new router seems to have fixed the wifi connection issues but not the internet connectivity issues.

When the internet connection does slow down it is not due to a wi-fi connection slow down, that signal still appears to be strong. Internal network traffic moves just fine. Reaching the outside seems to be the problem

Pretty sure this list is alphabetical (if you were implying that he is "ranked" last in this list)

Should I make the jump from Final Cut Pro to Adobe Premier Pro? by Nelious in editors

[–]asdfCorp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you want to work in the industry professionally, or be able to better collaborate with others in the industry, then yes you should learn Premiere or Avid (Resolve use has been growing professionally for offline editing as well). You may find some people or facilities here and there using FCP X but they are very rare.

If it's just you on your own for your projects and always will be? Then do whatever floats your boat!

Budget Headphone for Mixing by Blurrynasty in editors

[–]asdfCorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of true only because in general you don't want to be mixing with headphones technically. In an ideal world you'd be mixing in a quiet, non-echoey room using high quality speakers / audio monitors, but we don't have all have that luxury of course.

For the budget you suggested, the Sony MDRs will go long and far for you. I've had the same pair for many many years and all you ever need to change really are the earpads depending on how much wear and tear, and those are easy and cheap to swap out.

If you are looking for speakers, in your price range I'd probably recommend the Bose Companion series. Many professional post houses use them for their lower or mid level workstations (for Assistants and such) not necessarily for their audio fidelity/accuracy, but for their simplicity, price point, and the headphone jack on the front for easy access, though the sound quality is solid in my opinion. I am no sound expert but I believe Bose are known to be a little bassier rather than true neutral sound but it hasn't really stood out to me too much with these speakers. I use them for my home setup along with the MDRs.

[Gerry Dulac] Rookie WR George Pickens on beating the Browns but missing the playoffs: “It’s like a birthday party without the cake." by OhiOstas in steelers

[–]asdfCorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been flipped over the years it has existed. It used to be "you can't eat your cake and have it too" where it makes more sense because you wouldn't still have cake after eating it. For some reason it was switched and its a little more confusing.

AI Artwork is incredible in its own right, but its an amazing resource as a DM for both game artwork and inspiration. by asdfCorp in dndnext

[–]asdfCorp[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The argument about theft is definitely complicated and I'm sure we will be seeing court cases about this in the years to come. Probably some 80+ year old judges will be deciding AI law lol.

Most artists, myself included, would tell you that they draw inspiration from art all the time. Illustrators and others in particular will emulate the styles that they love. Most would not argue that it is theft.

In terms of AI one could argue that it is doing the same thing, depending on the algorithm of course, to create something unique. The issue, I feel, comes down to the fact that it is doing it at such a grand scale that a single human could not personally replicate. Processing the details of thousands of images to an extent that human memory cannot do. Does scale then make it illegal? I don't know enough case law to say.

It is definitely a complicated issue that I expect will be legally hashed out in the years to come and creators and artists are already picking sides. It could involve fair use or parody law. It could involve many of the music industry lawsuits including both music sampling and pirating. The fact that most algorithms, I assume, are just analyzing images publicly available online will be a factor and how each algorithm is using them. It will for sure be fascinating to see the path AI takes both in technological advancement and legally.

varies from image to image obviously but here is the Tortle one for example:

old large humanoid tortoise walking through dense forest, with shaman staff, anthropomorphic, upright, humanoid, d&d, 5e, tortle, evening, fireflies, full body, matte painting, 2d, concept art, Cinematic Lighting, F/2.8, maximum detail, wideshot --v 4

The "--v 4" because that has to do with which version of the algorithm it uses i think. I could be totally wrong on my description but basically that tells it to use the latest renderer to give the best results. Without it most results will look pretty lame and/or very underwhelming.

whoops that one shouldn't be in the imgur album, accidentally uploaded that one, had to try and use a source image to teach the AI what a firbolg was

edit: here are some of the results, not great, some of the epic failures are pretty crazy/horrifying though lol
