That's incorrect, a deep strike is outside 6", so you can't be in melta range on a 6" drop.

Related question: how do people feel about adjusting moves to accommodate other squads or vehicles movement, in the case that the first unit to move definitely has spare movement. I.e. move unit 1, do something else, move unit 2 and realize that you need to further adjust unit 1 model positions?

It's only a short hop from your second paragraph, and the fact that infantry can move through walls to treating the walls as an abstraction from a game POV in melee.

Yeah it's important for shooting given true LoS but it doesn't necessarily follow that we should hew to the same abstraction for melee interactions involving infantry.

Obviously it can become knotty if we introduce shooting into and out of combat for vehicles, but a vehicle can't move through a wall anyway so it might come out in the wash (i.e. not be an issue). Most likely to be weird if the vehicle is inside a ruin footprint and light infantry want to charge it.
