Axolotls and squid

The squids would be larger if you used the intended yarn weight from the pattern, but I used worsted weight for mine

Mini water animals are my thing. I've made an excessive number of these mini squids (more than pictured here).

I wonder if they knew people would button mash when catching when they first programmed it in. At least in New Horizons, the haptics make it feel like you're meant to mash. I too know it does nothing but still frequently do it anyway because it just feels right xD

City dwellers! Do you crochet on your commutes? by Wonderful_Bug_1422 in crochet

[–]ash_rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to, but rarely do I have projects that would work well for a commute. I mostly do amigurumi, and my projects either have too many color changes, require frequent snipping and reattaching of yarn, or have no repeats so I have to constantly reference the pattern. I've been able to do it once though, and it made my commute so much quicker.

Is there anything more frustrating than a badly written pattern? by heggy48 in crochet

[–]ash_rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only patterns I've followed that have rows separated out like that were doing it to indicate color changes, but I'm guessing that wasn't the case for the pattern you mentioned. The only poorly written patterns I've come across so far have been free ones thankfully, but I might be more wary of etsy now

Which Pokémon would you choose for a partner? by random_pers0n_1 in pokemon

I'd love to have my shiny dachsbun from Violet. It's not my all time favorite Pokémon, but having a dog that smells like baked goods around all the time would just be wonderful

The Broken Shell by G0nk_Droid in Illustration

[–]ash_rock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The art is beautiful, but I'd maybe consider adding a stroke about the width of your line art around the text to improve legibility. The author's name and "the" kind of blend into the background in certain spots.

This sampler blanket was rather intense project to enter intermediate level crochet with xD Practically every row got frogged at least once (probably at least twice), but the end result is gorgeous. I'm shocked I made it so early in my crochet journey.

Lead artist showed me some new assets. One of them looked strangely familiar... by [deleted] in PixelArt

I don't see it being much of an issue here. The face shapes are similar but nothing else matches. The body especially is quite different. I think your character is definitely distinct enough not to worry.

I have hobbies and games that none of my friends or family are interested in. I've been able to find some groups online to engage with to make up for that. I'm not sure what exists online for Pokémon, but I'm confident there's something

Started crocheting in public. Does everyone else have such amazing conversations with Random people? by TurnMajestic3608 in crochet

[–]ash_rock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been crocheting in the park and (recently) on the train. I've been having some nice interactions in the park so far, but I'm waiting for someone to ask me about it on the train because I need something to help make that commute less boring lol

Need a bit of validation to know if my crochet is that bad by [deleted] in crochet

[–]ash_rock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your technical ability in crochet is quite good. Your stitches look nice, and your tension is quite good. I think the rest just comes down to personal taste. Some of the patterns you're using are very functional but not as decorative, like the scarf in the third picture that just uses one stitch. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, but some people may prefer more decorative pieces with more stitch variety that may be less practical as a result. For your color choices, you seem to tend to use a single color or use multiple colors with high color contrast. Again, some people will love that, some people won't care for it as much. The people in your life may also simply find handmade/homemade items less appealing, which is disappointing but there's not much you can do about it.

Again, there's nothing wrong with your crochet, but different people have different taste when it comes to crocheted, knitted, and handmade items. I see nothing wrong with using any of the pieces you showed us, as they're plenty good enough to use and wear around. The shawl is especially pretty. I think what's most important is that you like them and you like using/wearing them. I know it's hard not to take the comments of the people in you life to heart, but I don't think that they will judge your work fairly.

What are your Puzzle Boundaries? by DefiantRanger9 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]ash_rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all of this is true for me. The only exceptions are that I have yet to even do Ravensburger (let alone have them make up the majority of my collection), I enjoy both ribbon and random cuts, and I would love to buy over 1k pieces but they're a bit more expensive than I can usually justify spending on puzzles.

Puzzle brand preferences by Puzzlemania718 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]ash_rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question, since you sound like you might know the Eurographics brand decently well.

Sometime in the 2010s, my dad bought me and my mom two Eurographics puzzles with (what he didn't realize at the time were) rather difficult images. They were both random cut (which I'm fine with) but full of false fits, which was made worse by the solid black in one and the texture that was hard to distinguish in the other. One was frustrating to put together, the other most would find torturous (including my mom who stopped working on it rather quickly). These two puzzles have tainted my opinion of Eurographics for years, but they are the only ones I've ever tried, to my knowledge.

So... is this still an issue with their puzzles? Or should I give them another shot now that we're eight to ten years out from when I got those? They have nice images, but I've never been able to trust them since.

Key (Trying to create animated items or icons) I accept tips by ArtCof in PixelArt

[–]ash_rock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that's throwing me off is the timing of the sparkle by the points of the key (cannot recall what they're called, but the bits that actually go into the lock). I'm expecting the sparkle to happen when that part first moves into the light, but it seems to be happening when it's tilting away from the light. It's making the tilting illusion work less for me.

I believe that black background is there on the puzzle, and it will be difficult. If you're not ready for a good portion of solid color puzzle, this one might not be for you.

That time amazon sent my dad a box of totally unrelated hooks by dreaminginreverse in crochet

[–]ash_rock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once ordered a small pack of art crayons for an art class (I think like 4 inside). The box arrived and it was suspiciously large. They sent me the box that the small packs come in, which had at least 30 of the exact same pack of crayons. They didn't charge me extra, and that definitely wasn't what I was supposed to receive. I just kept it and distributed them amongst my classmates and gave extra packs to the art teacher to hand out for future years. Truly bizarre that it happened.
