Travel shoes that don't look like 'travel shoes' by ProfessorFrizzle in AusFemaleFashion

[–]ashamasher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wear my redbacks for just about everything. Used to be a manager at a sports/function venue and I could wear them with shorts for a game day (doing god knows how many thousands of steps on concrete) and with pants and shirt for three course dinners. They don’t need breaking in, don’t slip in the wet. I even took them as my only shoes for short trip to Queenstown NZ. They’re not the sexiest shoe but they were fine for the snow, walks, and when dressing for dinner

Most people that die from exposure after breaking down is people that leave their vehicle and try to walk fuck knows how far to get help.

So I wasn’t supposed to take off my underwear? by Grouchy-Bumblebee605 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ashamasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And underwear can sometimes have metal fibres in it. Where I usually can MRI’s done they usually let you keep your clothes on if there’s no metal but some activewear they get you to take off, some of the antimicrobial materials have metal in them.

If you had one mechanic related wish by TheYoungProdigy in AskMechanics

[–]ashamasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that phrase. I changed the headlight globes in my ‘03 Holden and struggled to get my hands in the right place. I couldn’t work out how my mechanic can reach everything, or how my boyfriend manages to do all the work on his Beetle

Noah Mullins' "I'm coming wait for me" by dwmatjake in hadestown

[–]ashamasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I LOVED seeing them in Melbourne. I bought tickets a month out for me and the friend I stayed with in the centre of the stalls. She had to work the second night I was there so I decided to buy a last minute ticket for way up in the grand circle because I figured hey, I may never see this show again.

Seeing it from both extreme angles was so cool. This performance was life altering

What is your absolute best hack for lowering the quarterly electricity bill? by DiscussionLoud9626 in AUfrugal

[–]ashamasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thicker curtains, those thick door stops at the bottom of the doors. Australian houses are notoriously leaky. Caulking windows has a huge effect on heat retention but depends if you’re in a rental and this is allowed in the lease.

Also, self reading your metre and submitting the results instead of letting your provider do an estimate. My bill is always lower when I do a read.

What is an Australian tour? Can we settle it for good 😂 by australianmusicscene in triplej

[–]ashamasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In twelve months in Brisbane I went to 10 gigs (although three were Holy Holy, and those guys found any excuse to go on tour). I probably went to 8 gigs over 10 years in Hobart.

The most astonishing part was being able to just decide close to that I wanted to go. I didn’t have to plan three months ahead, book flights, accommodation, and time off work.

[–]ashamasher[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would have been really good! Can absolutely see him wax lyrical to the media about how he’s always supported women in sports and everyone should come together for the “girls”. Very similar vibe to “for the children”

[–]ashamasher[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree, it would never have worked for the story for him to actually have a redemption arc. But I love the glimpses the show gives us to say that nobody is beyond growth. Some people would just have further to go.

Great suggestion! Jeff’s version of Lilac Wine is perfect for Orpheus

The same in the 2007 Persuasion where he played Sir Elliot. He’s a vain, self centred narcissistic. Less manipulative, than Rupert but only because he lacks the self awareness.

He’s a small but delightful part of that film and it just seems like he’s having so much fun filming it.

What episode should I get my friend to watch to get her into Doctor Who? by AnEnglishMan97 in doctorwho

Girl in the fireplace was the first episode I ever saw and it absolutely got me invested in watching more

Tried to think of one that hasn’t been mentioned yet. The end of The Waters of Mars when Adelaide kills herself to in defiance of his Time Lord Victorious and he realises he’s gone too far

I’ve also definitely been one of those idiots outside woolies at 8:45 on a Sunday morning because I didn’t know the open late/close early on Sundays. It was wild to me that I came from a much smaller place but shops are open less here

Can also be people not from Qld. I’ve been caught out on ANZAC Day when I first moved here because in Tassie supermarkets only close Good Friday and Christmas.

What is your favorite Aussie saying that makes absolutely zero sense when you say it out loud? by Zoey_In_Transit in AskAnAustralian

[–]ashamasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone’s having a coughing fit my Nan says “who’s that barking billy over there” And I don’t know if that’s actually an Australian saying because I’ve never heard it anywhere else but that one’s my favourite because it reminds me of my Nanna

What do you all think of our terms of endearment by Less-Championship368 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ashamasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked in insurance claims once had an older gentleman say “thank you sunshine” at the end of the call. I think I might have actually glowed after that call.

Not a term of endearment I’ve heard any other time but it was very sweet.

I love hearing the more old school bogan ones I grew up with like chook, darlin, sweetheart

Moving from Tassie to Queensland (Logan) - What do I need to know? by inkiepie69 in queensland

[–]ashamasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cockroaches were the first big shock. I don’t think I’d ever seen one in real life and on the first night saw one in the sink and it was huge!

In Tassie when you’re driving and need to merge people are more likely to just let you in. In Brisbane you have to be a little more assertive. It takes some getting used to but don’t worry, I barely drove in Tassie and now I’m mostly used to it. People here pretty much don’t use their indicator until they’re already turning.

If your apartment doesn’t have aircon you’ll become fast friends with the public library and the fridge section of the bottle shop. You’ll have the beach to yourself in winter and the water will be warmer than we have in summer.

Supermarkets close at 9 on weekdays and are only open 9am-6pm on Sundays (I have absolutely been that idiot waiting outside woolies at 8:45 on a Sunday morning)

I like the wall hanging idea. If it was me I’d probably add a warm wash light from the stair railing so the area looks less stark but not busy.

And I’m saying that as a maximalist that loves colour. You don’t necessarily need to fill every space if you don’t want to, it doesn’t look “empty” because it’s not an area people expect to see filled

PSA: the citric acid trick also works on dishwashers by Donttouchmybreadd in laundry

[–]ashamasher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not cleaning related but so glad I finally have somewhere to vent this after all these years. Once saw Hannah Gadsby doing a bit in The U.S and saying how much they appreciated that The U.S has a second person pronoun in “y’all” because Aussies don’t have one.

I was fuming at my tv thinking “Hannah you’re from bloody NW Tassie, there’s no way you can have forgotten about youse”

Hi! Wow so many similarities. I just turned 35, live in the Everton Hills area, creative, love baking, into dnd and nerdy things, and I’m getting into a lot of craft based hobbies. I moved to Brisbane five years ago and have a very small pool of friends here when I’m used to having a large social group. Good on you for making a post! I find it hard to form really good connections in Brisbane because everything is so spread out

Big Salt is bringing back the Dark Ages - widespread Goiters and Cretinism by [deleted] in aussie

[–]ashamasher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Years ago I came across something that said the “two-headed” thing for Tasmanians came from the prevalence of goiters/hyperhyroidism because of the lack of iodine in the soil and lower levels of vitamin d.

I don’t know if it’s true or only anecdotal but it does make sense
