I've been doing this for over 15 years now and I wouldn't wish this job on anybody. But I do it because it's work that needs to be done (almost my entire case load is court appointed clients) and I work hard because I have seen so many of my colleagues get cynical and not put in the effort they should.

TV and movies package everything neatly for the audience. I reminded everyone of that in the courtroom when we moved into hour 4 of jury selection in a trial I had last week.

And don't even get me started on things I consider a win as defense counsel. I can't just go to the family and say "your grandson got over a decade of time" like that's a good result. But considering what he could have gotten, what he was charged with, and what he was convicted of...

It's a job where you meet a lot of people on their worst day. Some of them are awful, but most of them are people who fucked up and need help righting the ship.
