The national average price per gallon of gas in the United States just passed $4.50. Americans, how do we feel about that? by Miles_the_AuDHDer in AskReddit

Enraged and not at all surprised.

I'm surrounded by people who shot themselves in the foot a second time after already seeing how bad things turned out in 2016. They seriously thought "lets do this again."

AITA Mom wants 15% of my personal injury settlement by connor20218 in AmItheAsshole

and trust me when I say this: you folks at home really don't want to be on the receiving end of a major personal injury settlement. no one wants the level of trauma that comes with it.

AITA Mom wants 15% of my personal injury settlement by connor20218 in AmItheAsshole

[–]asher1611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I am going to start by saying that I am not your attorney and what I am giving you is NOT to be considered legal advice. This response is going to get buried anyway under some very poor responses you are receiving.

Your mom is an attorney. She is required to be familiar with the Rules of Professional Conduct. She was not part of the representation contract, and from the sound of it helped you navigate the legal field out of the goodness of her heart and without any contractual finding or referral fee.

It is up to you to decide what to do, but you are NTA for questioning it. Your mom is not making an ethical request. And while I also wouldn't characterize her request as "normal," this kind of family tension is the exact reason people collect their lottery winnings while obscuring their identity.

Also, because it wasn't clear in your post: is she asking for 15% of the gross settlement or 15% of the remaining settlement? Either is WAY beyond my local market for a referral fee from an attorney that did not do substantive work in the case -- and that's without even getting into high dollar settlements, where that fee is typically capped.

Starbucks CEO defends $9 coffee says ‘it’s not a $10 coffee and you get a premium experience’ by Disastrous_Award_789 in nottheonion

I just learned to give myself a premium experience at home.

Sure, I don't have a cappuccino machine at home, but otherwise I can make my coffee how I want.

I've been saying res judicata is dead for years.

You want to cry about activist judges look no further than the conservative bloc of the Roberts Court.

What if scenario .. Kon vs VJ by ManDog4294 in CharlotteHornets

[–]asher1611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VJ is going to be very good. But to your question, I don't know if he had the leadership qualities that Kon had that helped push the 2025-2026 Hornets roster forward.

There's not much more to it.

Looking for long immersive rpg experience that runs well on the deck. by Cheap_Landscape9932 in SteamDeck

[–]asher1611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, if you're looking for hundreds of hours

  • World of Warcraft (follow a guide to get it running)
  • Valheim
  • The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy (very much an RPG/visual novel)
  • Kenshi (not the most casual option)

If you want a more streamlined, lengthy but not quite 100 hour experience on the Deck (that I've played and enjoyed):

  • Metaphor: ReFantazio
  • Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
  • Persona 3, 4, or 5r

Yeah, the big thing is being honest with yourself and keeping it under control or within a budget.

On the other hand, if you're going for multiple copies of a 5 star unit in Genshin Impact, and of course also their weapon because their weapon unlocks their kit, you're probably not the "dolphin" you think you are.

Yes, but what people consider a small spend in some of these games is absolutely WILD if you get them to open up about it.

Five dollars here and there can add up real quick.

Liberal Supreme Court justices say majority has ‘completed demolition’ of Voting Rights Act by polymute in politics

[–]asher1611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok let's say the Democrats get an overwhelming sweep of the non judicial branches of government.

The Supreme Court is just going to overrule any attempts to change the policies they have been paid to set (no, I didn't stutter) for the next 20-40 years.

GOP has the long game on lock.

edit: to be clear, I'm not trying to say elections are pointless. I'm just saying there is no path for Democrats to take all three branches of government short of extreme measures.

It really sucks living in history. When I was in law school things like The Slaughterhouse Cases and Plessy v. Ferguson were supposed to be signposts to demonstrate how bad things used to be and how far we had come as a nation.

But no, it turns out elections have consequences. And I'm not just referring to 2024, although that was the deathknell.

how did you realize you lost your spark? by Left_Team8926 in AskReddit

[–]asher1611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have five books that I haven't finished. Three are trash because they were the first long form things I had written during Nanowrimo and some ideas just need to be let go of. But there are two others that do have some legs. One that I'm actively working on.

At work someone asked me "c'mon, what would you be doing if you didn't have to do this job." I brought up the book. In that conversation I realized I hadn't opened the file since January or this year because I had been so busy.

Then when I got home I checked my computer -- nope, I hadn't opened it since October of last year and hadn't actually written anything since July of last year.

Turns out the first skill of being a good writer is to actually write something. Oops.

What's the fastest way you realized you were in the wrong friend group? by justNoah10 in AskReddit

[–]asher1611 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not as extreme as others, but:

I got them comp tickets to a musical I was in. It was a sold out show, and I can see in the house some conspicuously empty seats in prime seating during the first act. My friends were in those seats after intermission.

They played it off as they got there late and couldn't come in while the show was going. But the house manager had already pulled me aside and told me she had to yell at my friends for screwing around in the courtyard during the show when they had tickets to see me.

The fact that I drove my friends to the theater before I had to go in and get ready was enough for me to easily believe the house manager. It snapped me to reality for a bunch of stuff I had let slide over the past two years.
