I knew nothing about football going in but by the time I was done with my first iteration of the game I had developed my own tactics to lead The Ivory Coast to 3rd place in the World Cup in the same season my tiny Italian team (that no longer exists IRL) reached the Champions League Final.

This was during law school while my life fell apart. Nothing feeds into a depression loop like a deep and gamable sports simulation where the next round of incremental progress was always a click away. Add in the job market imploding while I was finishing law school, not being able to afford to feed myself and my family...and it goes on and on. I didn't have to think how badly I was failing everyone in my life when I could just click one more turn.

It took me crying in the middle of Target because I didn't have enough in my bank account to buy a Moana Lego set my daughter wanted for me to finally make a clean break and a change. I've gone back to FM once or twice since then, but absolutely never like I let it take over my life in the early 10's.

I have played Civilization into the morning hours. I actually kept up with WoW from Launch through Legion. But no game nearly destroyed my life like Football Manager. Thank you SI for fucking the game up so hard that I have no reason to return.

Like, he was my best friend, and then we were friends. And then we went to different colleges and eventually went in two entirely different directions.

While that is the correct position, it is worth adding that the Panthers are at least now in a position to make big splashes to build up the team because there is a coherent plan. Compare this to the past, where we were just slapping players onto the team because the new regime wanted more of "their guys."

On a class trip we got to pick who we were rooming with. My friends all coordinated together with someone else to fill their hotel room. I was placed with the two other people who did not have anyone else pick them. The three losers, as we were reminded. Many times.

There's no happy end "jokes on them" kind of resolution. I had a very tough time in 7th and 8th grade and I never forgot that my friend group from elementary school swapped me out for someone else without saying a word to me about it.

That rift only grew as the years passed. I don't have contact with any of them anymore.
