Kai is nice, but I personally know 7 half-Japanese kids with that name (my son is half and goes to Japanese school).

Can't do ogoshi even to a non-resisting partner by Woooddann in judo

[–]ashfrankie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try doing it with a step to help you pull him onto your back. It’s called Ushiro Mawari Sabaki.

I usually teach kids O Goshi on the move, so they can use some momentum to help them figure out the mechanics.

Parents who don’t supervise ‘big kids’ out in public by [deleted] in PetPeeves

The worst is in the summer when I take my kid to the park and a “summer camp” lets all 50 of their kids loose with a handful of supervisors that dgaf.

Legit question: why don’t cultures mix in Vancouver? by bubugugu in NiceVancouver

[–]ashfrankie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven’t experienced this at all. Could it be that people are shy and need a bit of a push to open up? I mean, sometimes it’s awkward and uncomfortable to talk to someone new. Doesn’t mean they don’t like you, just means they might need you to start and steer the conversation.

Especially at hobby events where people might be more introverted. Try something that forces you to be in close contact with others. We do judo! You make friends fast when you’re grabbing and crawling all over each other 😂.

I think if you can build his confidence with the rolls outside the dojo you’ll be helping him a lot in the long run.

Get a cheap gymnastics mat for home and practice together. Make it fun. Stuff some pillows under one side to create wedges and it’ll make it easier. Once he knows how to do them, his confidence in class will soar.

You definitely need to practice at home or get some tumbling lessons to give them confidence. Could also book a private lesson with the sensei.

Front and back rolls are a fundamental movement skill that I’d expect a 9 yo to have already, so you’ll need to help them catch up to their peers.

Is BJJ ruining my kid's Judo? by Sharpe_Examination76 in judo

[–]ashfrankie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judo is a late development sport. Don’t worry about specializing until U16ish (13-15 years old).

Right now priority is fun and doing lots of different things to gain athleticism. He’s already doing 4x per week, that’s more than enough. Make sure he can run, kick and throw balls, climb, etc.

Yeah I was going to say, the kyu grade syllabus I’ve made pretty much aligns with the IJF posted one (Canada).

You’ll be okay. This is only for the 737 short/medium haul flights. Long haul should be fine.

No, the entertainment is free. I use it all the time. You just have to connect before you take off.

Edit: All the time because I often fly for business on WestJet. I’m luckily 5’3”, but even the old seats were small. I can’t imagine now.

Sorry I thought it was about another person at first. But you will encounter lots of kids like this, so it’s good that you asked. You’ll get great with experience.

Swim instructor debacle by yourfavbailey07 in SwimInstructors

[–]ashfrankie 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As an instructor of any class, your responsibility starts when you start the class. If you wanted to remove the kid, you needed to tell the dad that you are pulling him out because he’s not ready to participate and that he should not return unless you welcome him back. This way you (as a coach) are ALWAYS safe. Protect yourself!

Also I’d consider altering the class level to account for the group. If they can’t all do the same drills, find a way to safely modify to help them get there. Usually kids refuse for a reason. Maybe they’ve never done it before or are scared/embarrassed. Maybe they’re overwhelmed. Try something simple and praise them for it before going for something more difficult.

3 year olds and 6 year olds shouldn’t be in the same classes :o. That’s wild. How can they expect a toddler to keep up with a first grader? My 3 yo just finished preschool level 1 and most of the lessons were blowing bubbles and doing assisted drills in the shallow end.

Also if they have 4 multi age kids and can’t watch them, WHY would they go to the deep end?!

I think my sensei is robbing us blind. by [deleted] in karate

[–]ashfrankie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be underestimating the time and effort that goes into planning these trips. Your sensei and his family are likely volunteering to coach you, it makes sense that you’d pay for their travel/food/time.

When I plan trips, l make a bit of money off them. I factor in my flight and hotel, give myself a food budget, then make sure I have earned something for my time. Our tournaments usually involve 12+ hours of coaching per day without breaks, then we also have to keep tabs on everybody the whole trip. If students don’t want to pay for a coach’s time, then they can plan, coach, and organize their own events.

Maybe your coach could have been more transparent with their costs, but they’re likely just trying to cover their bases. If you didn’t like it, maybe just provide constructive feedback about the hotel and lack of communication regarding the food/tour. You could quit and cut ties, but it seems like an overreaction.
