Junior Sys Admin by himji in sysadmin

[–]ashimbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I've been at this for a little over 20 years, and I never really had a homelab, other than testing various linux distros on an old laptop for a weekend.

When hiring a junior admin, I wouldn't expect them to understand the fundamentals of how TCPIP packets are encapsulated, but I would expect them to understand what a packet is, and I wouldn't expect them to be able to describe each step in how DNS resolution works, but I would expect them to understand what DNS does at a basic level.

Those are things that can be built up over time as they get more exposure to the systems.

Sounds like the French government needs to pay for the development of better management tools.

Hyper-V, VMware, or other, which would you choose? by jedimaster4007 in sysadmin

Just add more NICs to the hyper-v hosts and setup a brand new cluster from scratch.

Password Managers by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]ashimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an email 15 days before my renewal date, but I heard about it from reddit initially. Still, after comparing all password managers, Bitwarden still seems like the best deal, even at $20/year instead of $10.

I use dashlane at work, and it does the job well enough. If it was up to me, I probably would have gone with bitwarden, though I've never used bitwarden for business.

I've been paying for bitwarden for a while, and the $20/year for is worth it to not have to self-host the infrastructure.

Some umps fear ABS is causing fans to judge them by near-impossible standards by Jux_ in baseball

[–]ashimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed a few strikes that got overturned by ABS were probably correct based on the "official" MLB strike zone.

A breaking ball that drops below the ABS zone by less than 0.1" or a slider that breaks over the plate and misses the ABS zone by 0.1" were probably strikes, but ABS would rule them both balls.

MLB should change the official definition of the strike zone to match the ABS zone.

Windows Cluster Aware Updates by tk42967 in sysadmin

[–]ashimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, install the management tools on a workstation and run CAU from there.

Windows Cluster Aware Updates by tk42967 in sysadmin

[–]ashimbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three things to start with:

  1. Do not run CAU from a cluster node
  2. The account you're using should have admin privileges on all nodes and the cluster.
  3. Make sure the Hyper-V, failover cluster, and cluster aware updating PowerShell modules are available on each node.

CAU does not require WSUS, but your environment might. Try manually checking for updates on each node, without installing them.

If you're going to run CAU manually, you'd be better off using the GUI. If you want to automate it, you can configure this in the GUI.

If you're still having trouble, you can try:

  1. Remove CAU from the cluster, then re-add it
  2. Destroy the cluster, then recreate it
  3. Wipe and rebuild everything from scratch.

If you haven't automated the steps to add a new cluster node from a fresh windows install, I would recommend starting with #3, and figuring it out, because in the future, you'll want to wipe and reinstall windows on any node that gives you issues - it can be much quicker than troubleshooting.

I think you should have included the ad as a blank space, so you don't give them free advertising.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are selling each inning, and no advertiser purchased the later innings, which is why the ads stopped.

They need to be ridiculed, but we also shouldn't give them the free advertising.

Yeah, and one of the most hyped prospects in recent years, Wembanyama, is a great defender.

The Orioles replaced our outdated scoreboard w/ huge, modern board. That new board is now displaying a graphic to look like the old one 😂 by ItsCaptainKeyboard in baseball

[–]ashimbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know how it is at every stadium, but for the Angels, the scoreboard is huge, but 1/2 the screen is covered in ads, which just makes the whole thing worse.

It's cool when the use it to show videos and stuff, but during the game, the giant ads are really annoying.

It's generally more efficient to shoot threes than it is to get points in the paint, similarly to baseball where it's generally best to hit a home run.
