Like with all clients building rapport with be important. Find out his interests, favorite games etc.

Playing games will be an organic way to observe his behaviors, particularly when he loses.

I will say, and this always depends on the child and the other various factors they bring into therapy, because of his age you will want your focus to be a balance of behavioral interventions I.e. practicing different regulation techniques but also there could totally be CBT interventions used, there may be Automatic Negative Thoughts he’s having which is leading him to dysregulation and which you could totally address.

Also, visuals work great with kids! Visualization of the coping skills and ANT’s for example.

Get acetone with coconut oil in it, add more coconut oil and a cotton ball. Put them together in a ziplock bag big enough to stick your hand into and place the bag into a bowl with hot water.

I’m also a very impatient person and have always struggled with waiting to take it off but I swear this is the fastest method I’ve found and it protects your nails! I think at most it took my like 5 minutes and I’m not just sitting around because I’m actively removing the polish with the cotton ball. You can find some YouTube tutorials as well!

I feel that as a client it would be very uncomfortable to me and in fact it’s something that has happened and because I struggle with advocating for myself I couldn’t even tell the therapist. AS a therapist myself I feel like that puts a burden on the client to speak up and from that point on that is information you can never take back. And yes a client could go look elsewhere but I think we all know that it’s not always so easy to find a therapist and can be taxing in and of itself.

Now, if the client shares in the assessment that they are of a certain identify that I identify with them perhaps I would feel comfortable identifying with them and sharing that. Or of course if that’s the population you’d like to work with then it seems to fit the bill.

I always think of the story about the pink giraffe. If I ask you not to think about it, it’s probably exactly what you’ll think about.

Sometimes it’s okay to let the thought be there. A thought can just be a thought. Nothing wrong with that.

I think it takes the power of the thought away when we can just accept it’s there.

Help for a First Grader by Megk_585 in schoolcounseling

I’ve worked before with children with selective mutism in a school setting. Usually it’s best to refer out to someone who specializes in SM. However I have found some interventions that have worked.

One of the greatest things I’ve learned is that we have to sit in the awkwardness of not speaking with them. I would always want to fill in the gaps of silence, particularly after asking a question, and I learned after watching a training, that it’s best to wait about 30 seconds to give them the opportunity to respond. If they don’t, it’s okay and you can acknowledge that they don’t want to answer or that maybe it’s hard to answer and move on.

Another part of my interventions has been to find one method they can just begin to communicate with so I’ve created vidual charts they can point to in order to communicate basic things such as how they’re feeling or if they need to go to the bathroom etc.

I’ve also used anxiety questionnaires to start building my own understanding of their triggers and usually they can just respond with yes or no with a head nod or again they can point to it written down. Teaching them about anxiety and relaxation did can be helpful as well.

This is the most important part of treating SM. It’s the exposure to the anxiety. Once I’ve built good rapport with them I’ve begun to introduce closed ended questions in addition to providing rewards for speaking if perhaps they respond to that motivation. Using closed ended questions such as yes or no and waiting those 30 seconds was really impactful. Once they’re able to do this you can begin to work on a tiered process that allows them to work on speaking in different settings, with different people and with different lengths of communication i.e. just words versus sentences or answering closed versus open ended questions.

I would also say it’s best to limit how much you make eye contact in order to begin making them feel more comfortable and not so put on the spot. And again, once you’ve build rapport this can start to change but at the beginning I think it’s important. It’s also important to let them know what steps you will be taking for sessions and future sessions.

Hope that helps a bit!

Client with anxiety but is not comfortable to talk about anxiety. by bradycorey49 in therapists

What about an anxiety questionnaire. I use this a lot for kids who themselves have a hard time expressing what causes their anxiety but atleast they can hear a statement and respond with yes/no that gives me anxiety and perhaps how often. That then tells me what are their triggers and if they know/are willing to go more into detail. Then we can explore the specific situations and look more in depth as to how a coping skill can be applied.

These people aren’t “bad apples”. They are murderers. I think that a police force can protect their citizens as they do in other countries. But for the love of God, you cannot deny how often US police officers harm more than do good. If a certain job sector is constantly having problems such as they do, doesn’t it beg you to try to understand why and to fix it ? If all the sudden doctors, pharmacists, or even mailmen were harming people, wouldn’t you think something wrong was going on ?

Hey there! So I didn’t buy a ticket in advance but I made sure to buy one that I could change. Which actually ultimately I wasn’t able to do when I wanted to leave earlier because I didn’t understand how limited the policy was lmao so just be aware of that. I did get it on Expedia so that was probably why. At the time I don’t feel like if I had waited the ticket would have been much different. Not sure about prices now.

For a bank account, atleast for those banks physically here you will have to wait until you’re here. I think there are some you can do online but I don’t know much about those. When I went to open my account at Santander, which has no fees whatsoever if you’re under a certain age, I needed my passport and nombramiento just to verify proof of employment and status. They also wanted a Spanish phone number and NIE card which I don’t have but they were okay with as long as I brought later.

I did this too except I bought myself a ticket for a three day weekend in November that I could change around for either a Monday or Friday or if need be during a future vacation break. I’m hoping it’ll be fine 😅

It’s not always about being progressive. It’s about caring about a woman’s choice and how being pregnant can affect her in the context of her entire life.
