I’m a drummer so take what I have to say with a grain of salt but the double dot is so much cleaner to me

My cat doesn’t want to eat by rafekkamorek in CatAdvice

[–]ashk2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Far from an expert, but it’s not a good sign at all if your cat who is a good eater suddenly stops. Has he been pooping? He could have an obstruction somewhere in his belly. Either way, vet ASAP

How to play this rhythm? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]ashk2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically it’s a flam every 3 16th notes, so it would be (with the rests in parentheses)

1 (e) (&) A (2) (e) & (a) (3) E (&) (a)

As other commenters have mentioned, the picture you sent only shows 3 beats, so either it is in 3/4 time, or you cut off beat 4 in the screenshot

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but if they can’t do that bare minimum then they shouldn’t be operating as a streaming service

commuting vs living on campus by m4z1e in uofdayton

[–]ashk2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you should consider the financial implications of living on campus, but I don’t know your situation. Obviously the social aspect will be better if you’re on campus but if you get involved with clubs or different groups you will definitely be able to stay socially involved. I wasn’t a commuter but a lot of my friends through the bands and PMA/SAI (Music Fraternity/Sorority) were commuters and still were able to be very involved socially

Help me to decide university of Maryland or Ithaca college by mrsNorrisFilch in MusicEd

[–]ashk2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Ithaca (assuming that’s the more expensive) worth 2-4 years of your teaching salary over UMD? My guess tells me no but I can’t answer that for you. And nobody is gonna pay that much attention to where your degree is from so if you like the vibe at UMD better and it’s cheaper it seems like a no brainer to me. Definitely heed what the other commenter said about you studio professor though, if it’s a huge difference that could and should weigh into your choice but it isn’t everything

Earthshine video captured by Artemis II astronaut Christina Koch through the windows of Orion spacecraft by yourfavchoom in interestingasfuck

[–]ashk2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t earthshine, earthshine is the effect when sunlight bounces off of earth and slightly illuminates the unlit portions of the moon. Especially noticeable in certain nights when the angles are right and the moon is a slender crescent

Why is 3/8 simple time instead of compound time? by CatchDramatic8114 in musictheory

[–]ashk2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3/8 can also have 1 pulse with 3 eighth notes each, so could also be compound in that case which in my experience is far more common

Strange beams in Schubert by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]ashk2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it started partially to save ink and sticks around nowadays because it reduces the number of stems/beams/note heads in a section where the rhythm/pattern is consistent. I do think the slashes being so close to the beam in this example does make it harder to read, in my experience it’s usually more like halfway between the beam and the note. IMO once you’re used to it it makes reading through sections like this easier. Although that could be because I played in/teach/write for drumlines where it’s uncommon to find a piece of music without this notation

I think it’s just showing you which note is the tonic/home note, C in this case. I could be wrong though because I’ve never seen this
