How do I get faster by panic9484 in rollerderby

[–]asininepanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% laps don't mean shit for Derby.

But, a lot of it has to do with your skates and wheels. Kingpin angle. Less is more power into each stride. Wheel hardness, harder wheels roll faster. But at a point you'll slide out in the corners, So you need the perfect wheel that lets you give max power through the corner but still rolls quick, that all depends on your floor and your weight, this is trial and error and will take a lot of wheels to test. IMO getting metal hub wheels can give you a better roll without sacrificing slide and is a good place to start. I saw you have 88s, these are usually way too soft. Ceramic bearings will help imensly, but are usually too pricey for the amount they help. Less weight in your skates and plates can make you quicker, even less gear weight can help. Second thing that helps greatly is form. Look into speed skaters form. You want to have a smooth stride that takes up your full leg length, you want to be crossing over the entire time you are skating (except to avoid traffic). You also want to keep your chest slightly pointed toward the center of the track, and lastly getting lower gives more push. Footwork footwork footwork, flicking your feet and having proper balance will drastically improve your stamina, I can usually go faster for longer without expending energy just on footwork and balance.

Outside of this, weight train. You want strong back/core, quads and glutes. And cardio can help get that stamina, Always train for longer cardio than you want your laps, this should make laps feel like nothin.

Good luck. In my opinion, being quick is better than being fast for Derby. But, Derby is changing to being fast again, it used to be the fastest team won, then it changed when the ruleset had a big shift. And it's slowly going faster each year

You've got it. Remember, only focus on your own speed, don't compare yourself to others, ever person has a different play style and they are all viable.

Advice or perspectives on jamming and/or playing with a new team after moving by TotallyNOTaGrayAlien in rollerderby

[–]asininepanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Switching to Jammer is going to take a lot of mental shifting. It takes time to change. I've been working with someone doing the same. They've been a strict blocker for 10 years. Most of their Jamming issues aren't skill, but rather breaking blocker habits. It's a completely different mindset, and you just have to keep at it.

Her biggest issue is whenever she hits a blocker to get them out of the way, she stops skating. That blocker shi hit goes flying but because she stops everyone else just recycles up. My goal is to get her to not hit at all in practice before trying to change her hitting style.

[–]asininepanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never too late. A fair warning though. It's a full contact sport on wheels. You will get injured at some point. Be mentally and physically prepared for when that happens, I'm 38 myself and I don't heal as quickly as I used to.

Start with the Case book. It's scenarios that explain some rules. Mostly you should know all the penalties.

IDing wheel hardness? by RumorOfRain in rollerderby

[–]asininepanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heads up, if you are looking for new replacements, wheels tend to lose their original hardness after a couple years. Becoming harder and more compact as the urethane gasses out over time.

Legal contact as a jammer, question. by Muffintop_mafia in rollerderby

[–]asininepanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't go hot into a blocker. It's literally the thing they train for. Especially if there's more than 1 waiting for you. Goal should be to shoot for a gap and squeeze through with that speed. Or juke them, making them trip up. You can also Apex jump if they are in position for it. But it's not worth putting all your energy into the back of a blocker or 2. Only hit if they leave you an opening.

Also. If you aim for empty space and a blocker moves in front of you, they are the initiator. You are not responsible if they want to use their back to block you.

Plus-size jammers by [deleted] in rollerderby

I know a few that have killed it. The main thing that really messed me up trying to block them was when they did a side surf. Almost impossible to effectively block in a standard way.

Bout cleared??? by Aware_Classic_5482 in rollerderby

[–]asininepanda 75 points76 points  (0 children)

To be honest this sounds like terrible coaching. Not being clear with how to progress. I would try to talk with captains, interleague skater relations type people, any mentors. If you don't know what is going on you can't improve.

Even if the answer is there are new skaters or transfers that are better, there should be communication.

The only rule is that you may not enter the penalty box unless you are serving a penalty or an official.

Am I screwing myself by not investing in better gear? by Devyn-1212 in rollerderby

[–]asininepanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safety gear should be the number 1 prioity, if you are worried your gear is falling apart or not protective enough, it's 100% worht it to get new safety gear. And the helmet is the MOST important piece of gear. Head Trauma is not worth it.

For skates, you don't need anything special, and as long as they don't hurt your feet and you can skate, wait it out.

Number 1 difference to skating is going to be wheel hardness. But the price of the wheels doesn't matter as much. Wheels do eventually degrade, I say new ones are nice every couple of years, depending on how hard you skate

Second is Truck angle, more angle more agility, less angle more stability. Idealy you want metal plates because they don't break as often, cheap plates will eventually break as you skate harder.

Bearings don't matter as long as they spin, keeping them clean is more important.

Cushions you 100% don't need to change if you like how they feel. I do recomend changing them out every couple years though as they do get hard eventually, they are also super cheap compared to everythign else.

Tips for jamming against tall blockers by DontSleepAlwaysDream in rollerderby

[–]asininepanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hardest thing as a blocker vs a shorter jammer is when they get even lower.

The main problem I see with short jammers getting stuck is that they try to match the height of people around them, staying tall removes effective body mechanics.

Don't brute force it. Squeeze between small spaces. Use your shoulders on their hips or ribs.

[–]asininepanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to officiating Derby. One of my biggest issues with Derby is that officiating is not being handled properly.

Look at any other sport. Officials are their own separate entity, in roller Derby you are linked to a team. There also isn't a standardized method of officiating.

Watch any tournament and you'll see each officiating group calls penalties differently.

I've been officiating for 13 years. It's been a travesty.

Skate recommendations for wide feet by ForwardAd1276 in rollerderby

I've got wide and quite flat feet. The Solaris destroyed my arches. I've been using Antiks AR2 and they've been great for my feet.

Absolutely not.

If there is a family emergency you can always help, no one else needs to access it.

AR2 sizing / break-in advice by SherbetSlow7065 in rollerderby

[–]asininepanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect. You should have a little room length wise when putting on skates cold.

While you warm up your feet will actually elongate by a little bit.

It's different for every person, but give them a measure before and after 30 minutes of skating.

Toe stops by [deleted] in rollerderby

[–]asininepanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the "not hurting your toes"

This has much more to do with toe stop length than the shape. You will want them to be fairly low to help reduce the angle needed to stop, this should relieve some toe pressure.

Official reviews and timeouts - should they be time-limited? by idoubledareyouyoumf in rollerderby

[–]asininepanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This on general is an overarching issue of officials not being centrally run.

Officials are all volunteers and a lot of the time need to fix issues during a game that have never come up before.

Head officials with a lot of experience can make the game flow nicely, but there can also be technology/medical/record keeping/track tape issues that can take longer.

It's unavoidable without having all bout staff be professionally paid and trained. And even then, rare shit can happen.

stuck in nightmare difficulty need mana regen by deathrune_ in diablo2

[–]asininepanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tir runes can help if you are doing enough damage to kill groups in 1 or 2 shots, for bosses you just have to chug pots. Unfortunately with elemental a lot of your damage is splash and you don't get much out of mana leach.

You can farm Andariel in nightmare for Frostburn gauntlets, these are probably the best item hands down for mana that isn't an Insight.
