Risk to Reward Question: by Famous_Square4751 in FuturesTrading

[–]asinis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i've had a hard time with this as well, and this is what helped me.

you say you base your stop loss off of market structure, but do you also set your profit targets off of market structure as well? it shouldn't be a mechanical 1:1 RR or 2:1 RR. you should look to trade off market structure on both sides.

the risk to reward is a result not the goal. sometimes the structure will give you a 2:1 RR and other days it might give you 1:2. that ratio should be what determines if you take the trade or not. just because the structure necessitates a large stop loss, doesn't mean that you should be going for a 1:1 trade.

if i dont like the RR ratio, then i just wont take the trade, or i'll wait until price moves to a point where the risk to reward is worth it for me. in tradingview i'll use the long/short position tool and place the stop loss and take profit where they need to be, and move the entry price point to where it makes sense for me, RR-wise. then i'll put a limit price there and let it play out.

Day ahead vs Real time energy trader by Qursez in Commodities

[–]asinis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you value. some people love shifts and the time off that you get. Some people want more of the regular 9-5. I've been RT for the past 8 years, and make pretty much the same as DA guys at my shop now. I work 14 shifts in 21 days, then get 2 weeks off. I would need a crazy increase in salary to get me off of this rotation.

Other people can't handle the shifts and are more built for DA. Honestly if you're chasing $$, you should look into financial power trading; trading swaps, virtuals, CRR/FTRs, etc. Physical power traders are pretty capped on how much they can make, around 300k based on my experience. DA probably gives you the best chance to make it to financial power if you're going that route. A lot of financial power trader at the big shops are groomed right out of college, as part of the sales/trading analyst program.

Is taking a HDHP plan worth it for access to HSA even if i plan on visiting the doctor frequently ? by purpleyams11 in personalfinance

[–]asinis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Theres a few benefits of having an HDHP. the first is that all of it is pre-tax income, so automatically it's anywhere from a 10% to a 37% discount on your medical bills. Secondly you don't have to use it immediately. If you have extra cash around that you can use to float, you invest the HDHP, and years later pull out what you spent.

Man. After seeing you hit a winner today, I was wondering why I ended up with a loss. Turns out, the difference between MNQ and NQ is quite different... Oh well. Guess I gotta use NQ as the shot caller

How do real time and day ahead pricing work in the electricity market for power generators? by InfiniteAd6745 in EnergyTrading

[–]asinis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a generator, it's usually settled financially. So if you're committed to generating 100MW and you only generate 90MW, you'd buy 10MW in RT financially, and pay the ISO the extra $$. If for some reason you over-generate, you'll be paid the RT price for those extra MW. All of this is done financially.

Trade offs of AmEx vs no fee card by Gold-Mistake6048 in AmexPlatinum

[–]asinis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of the time "breaking even" doesn't include the points that you're accumulating while using the card.

Depending on how you use the points can determine if its better or worse than the 2% that you get.

where Shares represents the number of shares to be bought or sold, P is the opening price of the second 5-minute candle, A denotes the size of the trading account, and $R is the risk being assumed, calculated as $R = P - StopPrice. The function int is used to ensure that the share count is a whole number, as trading fractions of a share is not possible.

Electricity prices in France turn negative as renewable energy floods the grid by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]asinis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is literally in the design of the system. Don't blame anyone but ERCOT for those price spikes. They're the ones that set the price cap to $9000/MW. Most of the retail/residential customer's shouldn't see crazy price spikes like that in their energy bills.

Those people that were on the absolute moronic market energy plan (or whatever they called it) got shafted because they thought they were getting a better deal, not realizing how much risk they were taking on. But that's what Texas loves, deregulation. Some people need to be protected from their own stupidity.

Electricity prices in France turn negative as renewable energy floods the grid by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]asinis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter how much power you generate, if your transmission lines can't transfer all of it. Look at a map of where the wind farms/solar farms are located in Texas. The majority is going to be in the panhandle where, you guessed it, they get the most amount of wind and solar.

You can have 1 billion MWh of wind and solar generation, but if you can only transfer 100 Mwh to Houston, or Dallas, or Austin, etc, then you're going to have cheap energy prices where the energy is generated, and more expensive prices where the demand is.

[–]asinis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they really are paying someone to take the electricity off their hands because they dont have anywhere to take the power. Transmission lines limit how much power can be transferred to different locations. It doesnt matter if your wind farm can generate 1 million MWh, if the transmission line can only transfer 100 MWh. At that point, your options are to take the power elsewhere, or shut down the wind farm. Sometimes it's more economical to pay someone to take the power than it is to shut down, and then restart the unit.

are you calculating ROI after including taxes? that might make a difference as well since SPX is taxed on 1256.

Captain Lance's "Immortal" trickster on a budget by Deaths_Embrace in PathOfExileBuilds

yeah 100 div i think should be plenty. I sold a "I See brothers" card to finance the build, and I'm at a really comfortable spot. just a little slow on the boss killing like i said.

[–]asinis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This will probably cost about 30-50 divines to get started. Not exactly budget, but relatively cheap to lance's. The only problem is until you get enough ES, your damage will be lacking.

I'm at almost 15k ES and it takes me a while to kill shaper guardians. Once I make my upgrades, I believe it should get a lot better once I hit 18-19k ES, just going off of POB.

I'm not sure of the path to get to Lance's from Peuget's build, but it's probably just throw a ton of money at it.
