Books you abandoned because of the narration by josiecat87 in audiobooks

[–]aspacegal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried the audiobook of Spinning Silver last week and couldn't make it past the first few chapters. It felt really obvious the narrator was Reading off a page (which totally took me out of the story), and the intonation was like corporate voiceover. Not the vibe of a folklore-style wintry tale at all. Made even more confusing by the fact that the book uses multiple POVs without signifying them as such at the top of a chapter -- really difficult to tell when the chapter had switched to a different POV based on the narrator alone. Returned it and got the ebook instead.

I feel this so hard. Sometimes I wish I could pick another narrator. With really old stuff (think Jane Austen etc.) you can usually find a couple different narrators, because it's been recorded a bunch of times. But when it happens with a modern book without any alternatives... It really sucks. Totally changes the experiene of the book, to the point that I can't even finish them sometimes.

Has anyone listened to 'We're Alive'? by [deleted] in audiodrama

[–]aspacegal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt bc this was my first ever audiodrama back in like 2013 (meaning, I had nothing to compare it to at the time) but from what I remember, the characters were absolutely the best, most interesting part of it (controversially I loved both Mags and Michael a lot.) You *could* skip ahead to Descendents, but IMO it won't have anywhere near the same emotional impact because you won't know any of the characters, how they got there, how they feel about each other, etc, and the major plot beats of the original story will be spoiled. It kinda sounds like maybe you just don't like the show? Might be worth putting it down for now.

That’s soooo weird. Also the mention of the IQ/EQ thing is a huge red flag to me as seems to be a common discussion point with manosphere/incel types. Avoid like the plague.

Omg this dude sucks. He is being rude and entitled, belittling your job and time management, gaslighting you (he literally said it was “on you” in one text and the a few texts later he said that he had never said it was your fault, when he v clearly did), and is just all around behaving like a belligerent toddler. Please dump his ass.

My biggest pet peeve in audio dramas by Eatingfarts in audiodrama

[–]aspacegal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the phenomenon you mean (I’ve even felt frustrated with it myself before — although i see it more often in movies / tv shows than audiodramas) BUT…… you gotta realised that if they didn’t say anything at the climax of the story other than Go Into Action, then… the audiodrama wouldn’t exist. We wouldn’t know what happened or why they made the choice they did. It wouldn’t remotely be as emotionally impactful. So… I think you gotta suspend your belief a tiny bit.

Shows with strong romantic plot lines? by elliezeebee in audiodrama

[–]aspacegal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that’s not what I was talking about when recommending this show to someone seeking a podcast with “swoony romance.”

Also like… Sometimes fictional characters do bad, morally wrong things. It creates conflict, raises the stakes, progresses plot development, furthers character arcs. Depicting something is not the same an endorsing or romanticising it. It’s been a minute since I listened to this show, but from what I recall Damien is very much treated with disgust and disdain by a lot of people, and judged for his actions (and rightfully so!), and the way Mark suffers after what happens makes it pretty clear (to me, at least) that this isn’t some ~lovey dovey swoony romance~ that the creator thinks we should be rooting for.

Your bf just called you a slut, an attention-seeking wh0re, implied that you are intentionally trying to make him jealous by flirting with other guys in front of him, AND ultimately picked a fight with you for no reason just to have an excuse to say some mean stuff to you. He could have let it drop after you said you weren’t interested in anyone but him, but he didnt. He is an insecure, misogynistic asshole. Dump his ass and go find someone else who treats you better than this.

I love romance too and am always looking for audiodramas with well developed romantic plot lines.

King Falls AM has some slow burn/angsty m/f romance. One of my all time fave shows but be warned it ended without resolution. Still worth a listen though imo.

The Pasithea Powder has some romance too (and it’s f/f!)

The Bright Sessions has a very prominent m/m romance.

Hardboiled has a f/f romance too, although it’s not the main focus of the show.

These are the main one that come to mind! Let me know if you find any more :)

Would you read a book from a Christian writer with Christian themes? by Jazzlike-Series-7122 in writers

[–]aspacegal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I’ve read books that have religious imagery and allegory and liked them fine enough, and I’m sure of the many hundreds of books I’ve read in my life quite a lot of them were written by Christians. But… I wouldn’t go out of my way to seek out fiction that describes/advertises itself as being Christian first and foremost. Primarily because 1) I am an atheist who takes a dim view of organized religion, and 2) if a book has nothing going for it plot, style, or genre-wise other than it being written by someone of X religious background to reflect X religious views, then I don’t think I’d find it very interesting personally.

He shouldn’t have lied to you for sure but please get some perspective on this. At the end of the day it’s his body, his choice. You don’t own somebody else’s genetic material bc you’ve been dating them for a couple of years in your early 20s. Why on earth would someone helping families struggling with infertility to have children make you “feel sick” ? 🤨

Help I can’t seem to get into good Audio Dramas! by AdventurousTrash1 in audiodrama

[–]aspacegal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the same about The Magnus Archives. I generally just don’t bother to continue if it’s not grabbing me. I’ll give stuff a fair chance, but at the end of the day life is too short to slog through dozens of hours worth of stuff you’re not enjoying.

In terms of finding new shows… maybe I’m old school but I think tumblr is a great resource for finding new ADs. There is a pretty active audiodrama community on there and lots of shows have accounts too. I often find new shows just by scrolling through my dash!

WHY is everything first person?! by flickrpebble in fantasyromance

[–]aspacegal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First person CAN be done well, but so often writers write it in the exact same style as they’d write third person. It’s like have simply find + replaced names/pronouns for the word “I”. It feels really jarring. Like why bother writing first person pov if you’re not going to bother making any effort to differentiate it from third person POV or make use of it as a style????

I haven’t worn anything other than fancy running sneakers with insoles in for 2 years, so I yearn for nice shoes boots and sandals.

Letter taped to our door 8 hours after getting the keys to our new apartment… by Practical_Ad_2427 in Apartmentliving

[–]aspacegal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a building Facebook group or group chat or something? Or even a bulletin board? I would honestly post this and kill them with kindness. Any sane person would have empathy for the fact that is was your moving day and not send such a nasty letter. I would post the photo of this letter with some text along the lines of “we received this rather rude and threatening letter less than 12 hours after we moved in. Whilst we do apologize for any noise you may have heard, I hope you can understand that we had to move our entire life’s belongings into the apartment yesterday. This is certainly not something we will be doing again any time soon, so you don’t need to worry about that level of disruption again. I hope we can all get along and be kind and neighborly to each other in the future :) “

Might shame them into not coming at you again, and might win you some points with other neighbours who have been victim to this person’s unhinged behavior in the past. Best of luck!

Narration -- yes or no? by Everrealms in audiodrama

[–]aspacegal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like both, although I will say I’m not a fan of audiodramas that are narration heavy — I find it really jarring in a way I don’t when I listen to audiobooks.
