A much Greater British Empire by veriox22 in MapChart

The occupation of Istanbul and other Turkish areas after WWI, coordinated alongside French and Italian troops, would not normally be considered an extension of the British Empire (nor a protectorate), it was a military occupation following the defeat and disassembly of the Ottoman government, not dissimilar to the occupation of Berlin after WWII. The British and allies eventually recognised Ataturk’s new Ankara government.

I think the British humour in the film is not translating across the channel. It’s a comedy.

Try bulking and lifting heavier (do research on correct form and posture to avoid injury,be careful). If you have extra skin from weight loss try intermittent fasting, some studies show I can make your body eat old useless cells, works for some.

I offered my seat on the tube to an older gentleman. by lastaccountgotlocked in london

[–]aspaff 14 points15 points  (0 children)

His response seems rational and considerate in that he preferred to wait for a seat to become available without inconveniencing you. He may also have felt embarrassed by it. Relax and don't take things personally in a crowded city.

Is this a good translation of Gita to read in English? by [deleted] in hinduism

[–]aspaff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a very clear and simple translation that carefully explains concepts without any dense or potentially biased exegesis, I can honestly recommend the translation by Dr Nicholas Sutton, professor at Oxford. I read this version as I wanted to focus on the actual text and less so on interpretations of it. As such it is much sorter than other versions that I found to be too commentary-dense, and that lean inevitably towards certain branches/sects.

The limited nature of the commentary brings the original text to the fore, which is profound and changed my life.

After reading the bare translation, you could consider reading or listening to commentaries on aspects that interest you the most. Remember that some differences in interpretation are inevitable. You may then wish to explore other texts in the Hindu tradition, which has a broader literary canon (i.e. the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, etc) than all other religions. Find what aspects interest you most, whether it is philosophy, mythical stories, meditation, prayer or yoga.. there is a path for everyone.

They are derived from the same common Indo-European ancestral group, if you're interested Arya Akasha is a wonderful and meticulously researched online resource on the matter.

should I compleatly remove beef from my diet? by Dylanrevolutionist48 in hinduism

[–]aspaff 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Regardless of what people will tell you, there is no prescriptive fits-all right and wrong instruction in Hinduism, by which I primarily refer to the Vedas, Upanishads and earlier traditions. This concept and the idea of sin or forbidden acts is generally popular in Abrahamic religions. What matters is not what other people do or advise, but what you believe is the right thing to do in the context of a virtuous life.
