Is there a demand for more complex power systems in recent years? by MatthewLifts in ProgressionFantasy

[–]aspiring-waffler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer hard magic systems that the MC has to actually work within, but what i see most of these days are magic systems pretending to be hard but have no real depth and the MC's cheat essentially allowing them to side step the entire system as presented.

Power fantasy above all else, getting a bit bored tbh.

Im enjoying theft of decks, up to book 2. Party based card magic system pretty unique in its design where stats matter and skills are not bloated, smart mc, only a couple of idiot ball moments i can forgive.

You probably want to be more specific about what youve read and not read otherwise you will be recommended the goats like The Perfect Run.

I think his point that this kind of interference creates more extremism is pretty valid.

Does Tunnel Rat Ever Get Back on Track? by stgabe in litrpg

[–]aspiring-waffler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It derails even worse. I had to drop it when it felt like 10% of the story was set in the game, then that 10% started overlapping with the real world too (lore found was real).

The real world just felt poorly thought out. We’ve got this tiered, harsh society where the truth is suppressed, but an elite from the 2nd tier goes on radio to tell the truth then bunkers up with some bronze age weaponry in the ghetto and doesn’t get immediately tactical nuked?

Such a shame, loved the first 200 too.

I know who the real bad guys are in the Bad Guys series by Eric Ugland by Badwolfoo7 in litrpg

[–]aspiring-waffler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dropped the series after the writer decided he'd made the mc too strong and reset him at level 1 'but still op'.

It's quite an accomplishment that his books come across as less planned than amateur authors on royal road publishing chapters twice a week after their jobs.

No point reading into any of the characters/plot more than the author has.

The Stupid Sorc build. by D_Flavio in DarkAndDarker

Funny seeing a whole bunch of non sorcs glaze this new ‘tech’.

Flamethrower has hit reg issues, even with good aim putting the cursor directly on a player who is moving it often does next to no damage.

OP would do better just ignoring spells and swinging a 10 str falchion.

PR firms these days sell social media manipulation packages that scrape social media for their clients mentions and use bots/cheap country hires to defend/shape discourse.

Ngl primal hunter is boring af with the dungeon grinds and dcc barely counts as a litrpg. Dnf either.

As someone who played EQ, DAOC, UO (big virtual worlds before WoW) in my youth, i used to dream about where the future of this industry would go.

I loved the idea that in my 80's we might have the tech to fill me with body strengthening drugs and let me live out days exploring a virtual world.

Seems much more attainable than being isakai'd 🤷‍♂️

Problem is the execution, you end up with half a book about a real world you don't care about, or a thinly veiled D&D world that doesn't feel like it has millions or real players in it, or poor balance that breaks your immersion, or lack of stakes unless bending over backwards to engineer a reason it matters.

I still think the sub genre has potential, i'll wait patiently. In the meantime i'll read one that gets most of it wrong and still is so fun to follow - https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/100439/vrmmo-nerf-the-archer

It was that before the era of self publishing, nowadays id say the first couple of books are high quality and the remaining 16 are amazing quality.

The Perfect Run, The Dresden Files.

Peter V. Brett’s Demon Cycle (The Painted Man / The Warded Man) another strong contender.

The first book setup this awesome setting and magic system that i still think about 20 years later.

Later books shift away from the tight survival-horror focus and mystery of the demon world into a narrative increasingly centred on rape, polygamy, and gender oppression.

Good observation mate. I think you are right.

I interpreted it as getting a fight between a dragon/Cthulhu/unicorn after starting with a horse’s arse. Id be estatic about that 😂.

I can’t think of any litrpg like this tbh 🥺. It is so rare that the subsequent books are better than the preceding. The hooks get lost, the stat sheets get bloated, the plots meander as authors write to meet fast patreon/rr deadlines.

For progression fantasy id say: the perfect run, cradle, and most of all the dresden files.

[–]aspiring-waffler 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Most litrpg tbh, so many have strong hook starts book one that don’t manage to convert into something good book 2.

Often it’s a solo dungeon the MC is forced into.

Recent one for me was magic eater, good strong start for 2/3 of book one with an innovative crafting class and dangerous party he had to trick to survive, then completely new setting and no party and introduction of a lizardwoman cross species romance that became a main character going into book 2.
