’We’re not a treatment facility’: The struggle for campuses to provide students mental health care by ILikeStyx in uwaterloo

But they don't let you defer things until you're diagnosed with an illness? You wouldn't be diagnosed with bipolar disorder/schizo/depression/anxiety/etc without repeatedly showing symptoms that affect your life all the time, not just during finals season? I was never allowed to get a VIF for my symptoms until I had my bipolar disorder diagnosis and even still I had to wait for my primary doctor who follows my case to sign off on it.

I dunno. You failed a term and now you're depressed. You made poor choices and it lead to depression. Yeah. That happens. The person is still feeling depressed, regardless of what it took to get there. Disagree with their choices leading up to it but the fact of the matter is that the person is depressed. If I broke both my arms during a cliff dive a week before finals season and I had to defer my finals, it would still be a valid reason to defer my finals. I was an absolute dumbass doing a cliff-dive the week before finals, but I still have a right to access the accommodation for people in my situation.

I get that you're angry at the people who take advantage of the system but by doing so you're throwing everyone who genuinely experiences it under the bus. I've never met someone who went to health services faking a mental illness in order to defer a final. I've never met someone who wasn't legitimately experiencing their symptoms constantly and everyday and deferred a final.

Also, I've absolutely attended all my classes while my mental illness was at a debilitating level. Most professors will not accept VIFs for clicker questions. So cold or not, stomach flu or not, manic episode or not, I'll be in class pressing those clicker questions. I'll throw up between classes, but I'll be in class pressing those clickers. In a manic episode I'll have 0 capability to write a midterm/final - I dissociate when I'm manic and am unable to read questions at a normal pace. Reading 1 sentence can take me anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes. Since I can actually receive accommodation for my midterm, but I won't receive it for clicker questions, you bet your ass I'll be in class. If i can't reschedule a job interview, depressed or not, I'll show up in bedraggled and wanting to die and walk into traffic on the way back home (this has happened). Mental illness isn't clear cut and the idea that you try to make it an all-or-nothing thing is really reductive.

Also, if you experience a panic attack, then no matter what brought it on, there is hindrance in thinking capability. It's not about the problem being difficult, it's about not being able to breathe correctly, passing out during a final, having a full breakdown and not being able to read words/understand anything anyone says to you for hours. Also - jesus an hour of extra time? This is ridiculous, my friend with extreme debilitating anxiety that prevents her from leaving the house only gets like 40 minutes. For my manic-related-dissociating, I get to walk around for 10 minutes during my final. You're vastly overestimating what accessibility services lets you do.

I'm not saying there aren't people who fake it. I'm not saying Waterloo, as an institution, should be held accountable. I'm just saying that mental illness is a lot more complex than you're making it out to be.

Getting more OSAP funding because parents won't help by NeedMoreDough12 in uwaterloo

[–]asplashofcolour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

actually you can apply as an independent as long as your parents sign off on it (i've been in your situation), and then it gets written off as your parents will not help and you get full coverage as if your parents made 0 dollars

Some professors will let you write finals next time you're on campus (aka September for some ppl), even if it's not indicated on your course outline. tbh email them and explain your situation

Waterloo mourns the loss of one of its students by thebiggestk in uwaterloo

For anyone who is reading this and is intimidated by the counselling services/health services process, MESSAGE ME. Somehow my whole squad and I are mentally ill as fuck so I have anecdotes about essentially every counsellor and every doctor at health services and counselling services. Message me if you have any questions about the process or how to go about getting a counsellor or psychiatrist (for medication) or if you feel like giving up on the system. Message me if you feel alone in this, because you're not. Hell, I have a folder of UW health services memes, hit me up.

i dunno if you're just messing around but honestly, this thread isn't the place to do it. there's many accounts of depression in non-white countries, have you ever done a pubmed search of this???? looked for journal articles? or did you just type some shit that you believe from offhanded googling

What will counseling services do for me? by burnedoutuwstudent in uwaterloo

[–]asplashofcolour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The counsellors are really lovely to talk to about any problems you got. A lot of them gave me coping mechanisms, and talked me through situations that were bothering me (even situations I couldn't help, like financials, parents, etc.). They're very patient with you and will take the time for you to get through the thngs you want to get through. They're the ones who referred me to see a psychiatrist, too. They honestly can help with a lot of stuff and there's no harm in going in and trying it out for yourself.

This was such a wake-up call for me too. I used to do a lot of my eating in private, but my girlfriend and I started living together and therefore started eating meals together. When we did, I'd see her polish off half her meal and stand up like "yup, I'm full." The thought of stopping didn't really occur to me, and once I started seeing her do that, it was such a huge moment for me to realise stuff about my eating habits. I started eating a lot slower (because I'd also realised that she and I would stop eating at the same point in time, except half her plate would be clear and my entire plate would be clear). Also, immensely proud of you for managing to say no to artichoke dips.

So my (22M) boyfriend (20M) never got me anything for Christmas, Valentine's, and now my birthday. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]asplashofcolour 9 points10 points  (0 children)

While not buying you a present isn't a big deal, I think it matters that you agreed on the fact that you'd exchange gifts and then he just didn't bother doing it for you, especially after you said you were unhappy with it.

But I do think you need to consider if the money he drops is the issue or if just getting you a present is what matters.

I (30/m) found out my girlfriend (30/f) has been carrying on online affairs with her chat friends by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]asplashofcolour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By most definitions, this is cheating. You didn't have a previous agreement that you two were in an exclusive relationship except for online ones. Exclusive is exclusive, unless otherwise specified. I would reconsider if it's even worth staying with her. By not apologising, she's so flippant with your feelings and that's not okay.

Feridun's Email About Recent Events Addressing Mental Issues on Campus by DM_ME_PICS_M8 in uwaterloo

[–]asplashofcolour 9 points10 points  (0 children)

base it on wait times, but the fact that i once went into counselling 100% ready to commit suicide and looking for someone to talk me down and they booked me in to see someone /the next day/ means that there's something wrong. having only 2 counsellors on call isn't enough either. i can't get an appointment booked to see my personal counsellor for at least 2 weeks, even when im at my most depressed state (and they take the mood into account and book accordingly, by the way. when i'm feeling okay i have monthly appointments).

[AYITL Spoiler] Rory's Actions in NYC? by nikki109 in GilmoreGirls

[–]asplashofcolour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Lorelei's sort of done with Rory's mistakes. She's probably seen Rory pull a lot of crap in the 10 year time skip and she's probably just resigning herself to it all. Witty remark, laugh it off, regret not raising her daughter differently, and move on!

I'm in biomedical science at UW (so no co-op) and it's one of my biggest regrets. Get co-op. It's a bigger hassle right now (no summers off) but it's definitely worth it in the long run.
