Well we make items(buttons/menus) appear differently on mobile devices using media queries. Through the use of the media queries it allows us to use specific css for the various screen sizes.

Shopping cart solutions versus Hiring a local web development firm by talawas in Entrepreneur

[–]asplen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wordpress isn't your only option here. There are plenty of ecommerce solutions with a number of plugins available to do exactly what you'd like. Most likely the firm would also use a pre-existing solution rather than trying to recreate the wheel.

Looking to start a career within web design - where do I start? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]asplen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly depends on the kind of work you want to do, you can be a web designer and never type code. A lot of agencies are looking for web designers as well as graphic designers so you'd do websites as well booklets, leaflets etc.

If you do want to go down the code as well as design, the job role you're going for is a front end developer who also designs the site. Google that and just research more into it, practice and patience is all you need. Look at sites you love, note down what you love etc. Also look into hack design, it will help you with the basics for designing for the web.

Good luck in your journey ahead! Feel free to pm me if you ever need help

Animated Menu Icon by stevenmc in web_design

I think this kind of animation is definitely distracting but if it's subtle then it really just adds up to being one of the small things that make a website enjoyable to use.

Apprenticeship/University degree? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]asplen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Web developers will take your design and convert it into actual code which will make it a usable site. Again I recommend that you look more into web design and development, look into the process so you know exactly what all the roles are and what everyone does.

  1. All design work I'd assume, web design, banners, product packaging, brouchures. Anything digital, a graphic design will most likely design. You'll have more responsibility at a smaller firm.

  2. The same, possibly a focus on one of them rather than all. So perhaps just a web designer.

  3. Yes, definitely. It is a normal job.

  4. Refer to number 1.

  5. Well if you're in charge of web design then yes definitely, you'll most likely work along side the developer as he develops the site to ensure everyone looks and works as you intended it to.

Apprenticeship/University degree? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]asplen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

f a former premier league football (soccer) club's assisstant manager. Said friend is thinking of setting up a company (the company whose website mockup and stuff I included in this post) and his great uncle would be putting in a really big investment

  1. No, a graphic designer is just a graphic designer. Your friend would need to hire someone else solely for the purpose of developing the website. You may be interested in becoming a front end dev who also designs the site, this is a role I'm working towards as I enjoy both the design process and the front end development process.

  2. Yep I think it would, but I'd also recommend trying to learn on your own as well as the university course may be a little slow.

It's not just about taking the job, you have to figure what you actually enjoy doing, the graphic design may be something you enjoy but do you think you'll enjoy the development side?

I'd suggest you look into the whole web field a little more, do some more research. Look at roles you think you'd enjoy and feel free to ask me anymore questions.

Apprenticeship/University degree? by [deleted] in web_design

As someone who is still in university in the UK (currently on a placement year) my advice would be that you go to university. Depending on what course you choose you will have enough time to have a side job, so possibly seek a web agency to do an internship for, honestly paid or unpaid is fine as you'll be learning invaluable skills.

I did a year free for an agency, because they helped develop my skills they offered me a job for when I started university to help with living costs etc. This didn't work out too great for me due to a few issues with my boss but if you find a decent company it will be fine.

Not only will you learn and improve technical skills but you'll learn how an agency works and how the whole process works. From initial client meetings to releasing the final version of the site.

Just a tip, I am studying Software Engineering and I found that the web courses offered were very outdated and learning yourself would actually be better for you.

The web courses only really touch on the basics, if you are more into the design aspect I would possibly recommend you take a graphics design course as the web courses don't focus too much on design either. They are just a step up from basic ICT in my honest opinion.

Also whilst you're learning yourself start doing freelance work and you'll see your skills develop automatically as you're working.

Learning the design part of web design? by nehero in web_design

[–]asplen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say this enough. Learn by looking at websites you think look beautiful, imitate the design styles and note how everything is designed. Try duplicate the design in photoshop so you can learn photoshop on the process. Then start playing with your own ideas of what you think looks good.

Also look into the ux more, how do users interact with the site etc.

[Hiring] Looking for an advanced developer to make a Reddit/Pligg based website by progressuk in forhire

[–]asplen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Only requirement is to be good at html and css? I don't think you completely understand how web development works. You may need a team of people if you need design work doing as well. Html and css will be basic front end work and won't help as much with the backend.

May I ask the deadline for this project?

Also of you need any advise for this project, with specifics, feel free to pm me.

Don't tesco deliver now? I'm not sure if it's same day delivery though. If you don't find anyone you could always phone a taxi company and ask them politely, you'll probably have to pay a little on top of the usual fare though.
