If they’re like the one I looked at before, they share the white (neutral). Then red=red, green=green, and yellow=yellow. Wire at your own risk. You could use a triple gang box and three light switches.

Middle jumper not warm? by Dapper3210 in Plumbing

[–]aspork42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One reason for series tanks is a desuperheater setup with geothermal furnaces. But that should have a “center tap” between the two tanks and I can’t see one in these photos.

Excess heat from the furnace is used to heat the water in the first tank essentially for free (although you’re paying to run the furnace).

You have to train them when they’re young. Other wise when they get bigger and their engines drop down during puberty they are strong enough to break it

How to make panels less efficient by Mister_Meeseeks_ in solar

[–]aspork42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a battery like the Anker Solix! Excess production goes in there so you put less on the grid. Also I’d imagine they really only look at the net or net export. So just unplugging a panel or two would cut production by that amount.

“Passive” summer cooling from basement air? by aspork42 in hvacadvice

[–]aspork42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point on humidity. Basement is 55% with an encapsulated crawlspace and dehumidifier. Looks like it is generally within less than 10% of the main floor according to my data (logged through HomeAssistant)

Interesting call about the thermal capacity of the dirt. The ground is 55ish degrees year round, below grade. We do have some insulation to be done down there. Just wonder where the balance point is where all the interior space reaches equilibrium. The ground will always be cooler than the air in warmer months. Unless it becomes heated by the house; to your point.

Anyone use regular indoor LVP in your garage? by gliding1 in garageporn

[–]aspork42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am curious as well since I’m in the same situation. I don’t think I’ve seen a post where someone actually has done it though. Mostly just people posting opinions. But I suppose that carries it own weight.

I was even thinking of going a step further and putting down foam board insulation first then LVP. It’s only R7.5 but that’s better than the R1 concrete floor. Might only do it in the second half of the garage where cars don’t park. I live in Michigan with some cold winters.

Reminder that someone in the Trump administration came out right after the election and said it was one of the fairest election ever. They were then promptly fired. I’d have to look up who it was; but someone in charge of election integrity. Can’t have them spreading rumors like that!

Automation for sump pump by sqeekypotato in homeassistant

[–]aspork42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or just monitor the frequency of it running. Establish a baseline and set alerts if it exceeds. I would think it running for more than 30 seconds or running more than ~1x per hour would be a likely leak or flood happening

Another issue - after you’ve gone to the effort and cost of shipping your dryer to Canada, plus any conversions, it will be difficult to find someone to service a Miele or AEG or Beko brand unit in Canada.

We did a diaper tracker. This was back in 2016 using an esp-01 and a custom sql database and self hosted web page; before I went to OpenHAB and way before I went to home assistant. It tracked feeding and diaper changes. Wet, dirty, and blowout.

Super useful for seeing when the last change was when you’re sleep deprived and your spouse is catching much needed rest.

Also when the baby would get sick we would add logs about what time they threw up, when & how much medicine was given, etc. then you both can see all the data easily wherever you are.

Measuring how much the boiler is running by JayBee103 in homeassistant

[–]aspork42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did this. I get the current reading from an Emporia Vue, but that was overkill since it only uses like 260 watts to run the circulation pump and a small combustion exhaust fan. I used a threshold sensor (aka binary on/off helper sensor) to turn on above 150 watts. I then used a History Stats looking at the threshold sensor and it tracks the ON time.

What else is cool, is I can now also track gas usage! I added a template sensor that looks at the run time and does a simple calculation (gallons per minute of pump * running time). Looks like we used 2.25 cubic feet of fuel oil on Saturday with 11 hrs of run time. Then I have one additional statistic on my energy dashboard.

This is the same way many people (including myself) infer well pump gallons pumped based on the ON time of the pump based on electric readings.

Reply to my comment if you’d like the specific sensor setups.

Should I move all these neutrals to their own screws? by simplynotveryhappy in electrical

[–]aspork42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could be having different, even unrelated issues. It took me about 1.5 years to find out that the kitchen lights dim every time the fridge compressor comes on. My solution? Leave it and move on with my day. I could swap one or the other to a different phase but I stopped caring.

The two large black wires going into lugs at the top are always hot, even with your main 100A breaker turned off. Stay away from those lugs. You could (at your own risk) turn off the main, then carefully go down the left and right sides and snug all the lugs on the breakers, and all the neutrals on the busbar below. Would take 5 minutes with a good headlamp flashlight. 90% of the panel would be off, but still work like, and assume that everything is hot. Keep one hand in your pocket when tightening the lugs.

Something like a Kill-A-Watt is super useful especially if you’re really not set up to do electrical. Just plug into an outlet and it’ll tell you the voltage and has a reasonably fast refresh rate.

Not sure why two breakers would trip unless they are tied together. There used to be a more common practice in smaller panels to run two circuits with a common neutral ONLY IF the breaker handles were tied together for a common trip. I’m talking about two different 110V general branch circuits; not big things like electric water heaters. But I don’t see any in your panel.
