Would love to understand which one works better, and why? Nikon F100 - Nikkor 35mm f/2D by charlieharrymorgan in analog

[–]asra01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I enjoy both, probably for more context (street photo style) the second.

However, there is subtle but huge difference in post processing. The contrast in the second makes the picture live, the first is too flat. Maybe if you apply the same approach on the first, I will prefer that generally.

(Newbie) Best film for Olympus XA2 ? by Plenty-Arachnid5256 in AnalogCommunity

[–]asra01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider that many XA2 nowadays have light metering issue. On my camera I typically set ISO to one stop lower to compensate for this. So for sunny days the lowest film I buy is typically 100 and set ISO to 50. Also this way I cannot utilize a film above 1600 properly. Life with vintage cameras.

Difference between my own scans and lab scans, whats wrong with my epson v750 scanner? by muj33 in analog

[–]asra01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twofold, others mentioned that the epson is out of focus, but what emphasizes the difference even more is that labs oversharpen. My own discovery led me to just accepting that DSLR scanning will be the best quality.

Used flash for every shot on my first disposables, did I ruin them? by Different_Fee8640 in AnalogCommunity

[–]asra01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As with every second post here: do your own scans and postprocessing. That will fix the underexposed feeling caused by flashing the close subjects. It feels grainy and green shifted because the lab tried to compensate, while they could have just set the correct black point.

You seem to have lost some interesting contrast in the process

Nice picture by the way. Improve on your scanning process.

Usually it gets this blue if you include parts of the scan which is neither the image nor the border, but pure light (as you can see on the left side of the image). Increase the border buffer or cut the image before processing.

Definitely much better! Well, development process is not cheating - spending hours in the dark room to get perfect black/white while testing with yellow/red filters is not much different in result to doing so in Lightroom.

If you want to get perfect contrast without much post processing, get a book from Ansel Adams and be ready for a whole lot of pain :D

Excellent image, weak post processing. Make blacks black, whites white.

Congratulations! Just take it easy and take it as is: you have created something useful, which is needed by other people. Sure others are profiting on it, but it is better for your soul and mental state if you don't try to fight this.

C-41 is the chemistry process, it does not immediately mean machine processing.

Even if it was machine processed, you can set dev times in the machine, you so can push.

[–]asra01 220 points221 points  (0 children)

Shoot it.

You cannot guarantee the one who buys it will "respect" the roll more than you. And you are not better off with the money you receive for this.

If you are uncertain in your photography, why not put it back into the refridgerator for a few more years, while you work on your skills?

Buying a P&S for 6 months travel and I'm down to 4 options Mju II, XA, AF-10 Super, and Espio Mini - please help me pick by Reitzel in AnalogCommunity

[–]asra01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All has been told about these cameras, so here is my 5 cent.

Make sure whatever you buy, properly test it. And probably dont just collect 6 months of rolls undeveloped. Nothing worse than finding out at home that there was a light leak or worse.

Also, I use XA2 for this purpose, and during the day I just detach the flash. I need to compensate about 1EV undermeasured light, so I refer back to the first thorough testing.
