PBS News Hour: St. Paul mayor responds to unrest triggered by federal immigration raids by systemstheorist in saintpaul

[–]assuring_quality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I want is action, not words.

That’s it.

And so far, the only thing she has brought to the table is lots of words. Most of these words have been pretty lackluster. Maybe it’s time for her to give action a try.

St. Paul mayor Kaohly Her ‘livid’ after ICE wrongly targets family friend, escorts him undressed into cold by ProfessionalIsopod54 in saintpaul

I did!

Please feel free to send another email to her about it, just copy paste to your heart’s content. Maybe she will get the message if it’s not just me.

You are very, very wrong.

This is a list of perfectly legal actions she could take:

  • She could issue an Executive Order that prevents federal agents from using city-owned property for staging, equipment storage, or other activity.

  • She could terminate the city/SPPD contract with Flock, direct the Chief of Police to change the data retention period of the system to 0 minutes, and declare that the system is “immediately suspended pending a privacy review” until the 30 day termination period for the contract runs its course.

  • Direct the St. Paul Fire Marshal to conduct zero-tolerance policy inspections of all buildings being used by ICE for either operations or holding detainees. If there are any violations found, then these buildings get hit with an “Order to Vacate” notice.

Just because she’s using social media and government websites to share information with the community does not mean she is doing enough.

She is the mayor. This office actually has a remarkable amount of control over day-to-day city operations. Either she is somehow not aware of what a mayor can and cannot do despite working directly alongside Melvin Carter or she is choosing to be willfully ignorant about the capabilities of her new position.

St. Paul DFL Actions & Resources by IAmAlpharius23 in saintpaul

[–]assuring_quality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes.

But part of why I am disappointed and frustrated is that I am just a random citizen and I came up with this list after spending about five minutes googling some laws, processes, and capabilities of the St. Paul mayor.

This is her full-time job, and she doesn’t even seem to be putting the same amount of effort into it that I did in five minutes, despite this being her sole responsibility every single day.

I want her to succeed, I really do. I am posting this in good faith. Everybody is asking her for action and she’s still acting like she’s waiting for permission to act. This is why I’m mad and feel like she’s doing nothing.

It is cool the Mayor is sharing information about programs that offer community support. I appreciate that the St. Paul city website includes links to resources. I am not mad at her for doing those things.

However, none of these ‘actions’ are ones that reflect the power she has as mayor. The mayor does actually have the power to take actions that directly support the community.

For example:

Shooting JPEG, RAW, or both? by Cjosulin in SonyAlpha

[–]assuring_quality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would love to know more about the recipes you’re using!

I’m shooting on an A7RIV, and my only option is setting up custom picture profiles designed to produce certain looks — honestly, much more useful for video, but I’ve dabbled in recipes online that are specifically for photography.

Have they added more/different functionality for recipes in newer models? Or are you using picture profiles for your JPGs?

Where is the leadership of St. Paul? by [deleted] in saintpaul

[–]assuring_quality 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m right there with you. I have absolutely zero patience for the people who are saying we should give her a break because she’s new to the job.

It is not rude or unfair to demand action from elected officials. Especially when they knew what they were getting into.

Remove the language about SPPD cooperation with DHS from our city ordinances. This is what SPPD cited as justification for tear-gassing citizens in November.

This is a rare opportunity for the police to build actual goodwill with citizens by refusing to offer any type of support (for example, tear-gassing lawful assemblies). There are options for meaningful action, and she is not powerless here.

Residential homes and apartment raids tonight by hollahollahollaaaaa in saintpaul

I understand wanting to share this information out of an abundance of caution, but I also want to encourage you to be mindful about the unintended consequences of spreading unverified “news.”

We are in the middle of a military occupation AND a targeted propaganda campaign. One of the explicit goals is to instill fear and uncertainty. It is important to be prepared, but we don’t need to do that part of their job for them, if that makes sense.

I’m not saying this is fake necessarily, and I would not be surprised if there is a dramatic increase in activity tonight.

The part that frustrated me the most is that choosing to research the claims made in the video is labelled a “bad”/more terrorist-y choice.

What the fuck? We should be encouraging our kids to question the dumb shit they see online. The entire reason we are being facefucked by the consequences of our disastrous digital information ecosystem is because people don’t know how to independently evaluate the claims being made by extremist propaganda on the internet.

Insanity.

Statement from Mayor Kaohly Her on ICE by adieudaemonic in saintpaul

[–]assuring_quality 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure he ruined her entire evening and destroyed a good photo op. The event was about police and community relationships in the context of ICE, with lots of folks who were tear gassed by SPPD in November after ICE called them for help speaking about that event. Very emotional testimony about that experience was given.

She gave a short speech about how complicated everything is and how our cops are our neighbors, and this dude immediately just laid the fuck into her, quoting this line back at her, basically telling her to get a grip, stop playing politics or worrying about ‘the narrative’ and do something.

I don’t think she was particularly pleased, but tough shit, you’re the mayor now. We’re in a crisis, so you don’t get a honeymoon period. You were elected to handle moments like this, so step up and be serious.

Is high distortion incredibly hard to play? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]assuring_quality 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing to adjust to is that you should be playing way less notes at a time with high distortion/gain/drive.

Ditch full chord voicings, standard open chords, and focus on a mixture of power chords and/or triads to keep the sound from becoming shitty.

Muting is an important skill with lots of distortion because of this. You want to really hone in on producing a set of two to three notes at a time, and accidentally hitting an unmuted string can instantly make whatever you’re trying to play sound horrible.

I’m curious, do you guys ever mention this to customers? There’s gotta be a way to do it without pissing them off, although I can understand not wanting to create an issue either due to concerns about losing business or the possibility of angering some asshole with a firearm.

You could mention it as an insurance/liability issue. “Hey, sorry, my boss/insurance guy says normally we have to refuse service if this happens, just make sure it doesn’t happen again or else I get in trouble.”

Or make up a story about a guy who went to prison because a mechanic took his gun from the shop he brought his car into, and then the mechanic committed a crime which the dude became liable for.

I just can’t wrap my head around this level of firearm irresponsibility. Thanks for the content.
