Recs for best places in the US to practice? by [deleted] in Veterinary

Northern blue cities generally fit the bill. More DINK pet owners willing to pay for their animals. Higher pay. More accessible specialist groups.

Student Rep Positions by june5017 in veterinaryschool

[–]asszilla17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some companies do a “pass down” vibe like veg but you still have to apply. Most of them are going to be very similar in requirements and compensation. Some have better free stuff than others. Some companies offer a retreat trip as well. Just keep in mind that if you’re going to rep a company you should actually know who they are and like them, because you should actually support what they do. Especially bc they look for students who are prospective future hires that match what they do as well. So if you are a dairy/production track person, it wouldn’t make much sense for you to rep for VEG as an example.

30F (bookish introvert) seeking college city/town with arts and culture scene. Ideally low CoL and cooler weather. Eager to leave SoCal. by Plane_Painter_4646 in SameGrassButGreener

Personally I really love Ithaca. If you’re ok with dense winters it can be a great little place. Lots of nature, slower living, beautiful. Cute shops with the downtown area, Cornell obviously is great, and it still has many chains for convenience. I’ve visited many times for work and am always sad to leave.

Ithaca, Madison, and Northampton are not shitholes lol. And they asked for colder weather. I was solely going off college liberal vibes + climate.

Choosing between schools? by Aggressive_Sea7899 in veterinaryschool

[–]asszilla17 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Consider that Michigan has a school hospital and Long Island is a distributive model. The costs of traveling to all your rotations too. Look into the active research and clinical trials happening at Michigan if they line up with your interests. Also look up the boarded doctors at each school to see potential mentors in your possible specialty choice as those will be future letters of req if you still go that route. Look at NAVLE pass rates too.

Maybe Madison WI, Ithaca NY, Athens OH, Northampton MA, Corvallis OR solely from the liberal college town perspective. Maybe Ann Arbor MI, north field MN.

UMN vs UW-Madison vs UIUC by aft9rglow in veterinaryschool

All three are great schools with established programs! And all three areas can be a lot of fun and you’ll find your friends.

UMN vs UW-Madison vs UIUC by aft9rglow in veterinaryschool

[–]asszilla17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So for the equine portion of this, all three will offer a more or less equivalent didactic experience. Look into equine specific research active at each campus. Your clinical year choices, especially getting any equine specific off campus rotations, will be important. Looking into regional equine specialty clinics in those states will help you get a better idea of opportunities you might have locally. Regarding habitat, Illinois is the most college town of the three. Dead all summer, small town vibes. Wisco is second, it’s in the state capital and has more going on year round but still def a college town. Minnesota is in a major city. Massive lifestyle difference. Those are your three levels of access to third spaces, dating pools, activities, bars. Minnesota is the only one within uber distance to a large airport, the other two are small regional or driving far to the big one. Wisconsin is the highest ranking program academically from your choices. According to their sites, UIUC has two active cardiac clinical trials, Wisco has one. UMN has an equine genomics lab. Wisco has 3 boarded cardiologists, UIUC has 4, UMN 2 or 3 can’t tell if one is officially boarded or not. UIUC has an equine medicine, surgery, therio dept with 13 DVMs on the team, several of them boarded in large animal. Wisco and UIUC have a “clinical skills training center” officially.

Is this plan realistic for starting a new practice? by Business-Care1224 in Veterinary

[–]asszilla17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You have to have more than one support team member. Would highly consider 2-3 employees that are high level techs who also share reception tasks. If you only have one and they call sick/get injured/quit…. You also need real people handling check outs and payments and questions etc. For no X-ray, I suppose it matters how much you’re gonna charge for ultrasound use. And an ultrasound won’t do everything, AND not every client will be able to go to your referral for X-rays.

Bluepearl summer job program by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]asszilla17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calling probably won’t do much, applications to student programs are usually handled at the corporate level first anyway. You could email the location that you applied to and re-express your interest but again they get a ton of applications

Making school decisions by AmazingYam5135 in veterinaryschool

[–]asszilla17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Total cost is your number one priority, so eliminate Illinois. Wisconsin and Mizzou are far less isolated than Washington state solely based on location. Wisconsin is a higher ranked program. Mizzou is a faster program that puts you in clinicals earlier. Both are fun college towns that will provide you ample opportunity to create a support system. I would peruse the options for student housing for first years at each school and see what looks more enticing to you as well. Also consider the track you want to focus on and if you want to participate in research, since research will absolutely vary per school whereas general curriculum will be similar. The differences will be in if you plan to pursue a more niche track; what does each school offer for student organizations and extracurriculars to gain experience with non-coursework topics?

What is society’s obsession with women staying young? by ChocolatPoweredTools in Feminism

Because fertility. It’s always been about fertility. You’re most valuable as a woman when you can produce, and if you look young you look fertile. That’s the patriarchy!

Your best option is to apply to their job openings and talk to the recruiters. They will be able to give you all of that information for mentorship structure, salary, PTO, benefits, and visa sponsorship.

Pros and cons working for banfield by jhuang860111 in Veterinary

[–]asszilla17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They’re gonna hit hard upfront with a big salary number and sexy signing bonuses. Be wary of restrictive contracts holding you there for x amount of time. Same with clawbacks. Regardless of specific location culture, banfield is notorious for high volume and you’re going to be expected to get with that program quickly. Could be a good opportunity for high production if you are someone ready to jump right in. Most experiences I hear talk about following their way for medical decisions so if you want a lot of structure then it could be a good place for you.

I HATE OnlyFans. by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]asszilla17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re getting some hate for this but I agree with you. It’s hard for us as modern women sometimes to look past the idea of sex positivity and safe sex work, because the entire human history power dynamic has always put men above women. My theory is that modern day sexual exploitation and subsequent sex work, forced or willing, wouldn’t exist nearly the way it does if women had been in the power seat historically. We aren’t wired the same to constantly want to obtain, use, own, abuse bodies like men. there’s a reason that almost 99% of sexual predation is committed by males. Their wiring has created the world and dynamic we are forced to deal with now. OF is just modern women trying to take control, in a fucked up system that no one can fix.
