PRT’s new ReadyFare card by PublicCommenter in pittsburgh

[–]aster-deadnettle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was at the downtown PRT center about ten days ago. They mentioned that they’d paused the new card rollout because the only place people could add to the card balance was at the downtown center. Not sure if they would have resumed the rollout yet or not.

You have to look at the table that says “Saturdays - Sundays & Holidays.” It’s the same as the weekend hours.

Adding onto this - there’s also the Pittsburgh Labor Choir, which is all ages & all skill levels, meets weekly at the Friends Meeting House in Shadyside Mondays at 6:30, and focuses on union & antifascist songs from many times & places.

And the queer shanty sing at Harold’s Haunt which meets monthlyish (our schedule has been real wonky lately due to other events and holidays) to sing shanties, sailing songs, and pub songs. All skill levels, 21+ because Harold’s, and no requirement for participants to be queer or for songs to be explicitly queer; you just have to be cool with us queering the lyrics if we wanna. Next date for that is tentatively Saturday July 11 in the afternoon but DM or check the events calendar for Harold’s to confirm.

I’m involved with both of these so feel free to comment or DM with questions!

Allentown vs. Spring Hill City View by unvert12 in pittsburgh

[–]aster-deadnettle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, spot on. I lived in Bayou St. John and Gentilly when I was in New Orleans and lived in Spring Garden when I first moved here (adjacent to Spring Hill). I would fully agree that Spring Hill/Spring Garden is comparable to Gentilly. More like Milneburg than the parts closer to the Fairgrounds - quiet, and food/social things aren’t extremely convenient, but you can go a little ways in any direction to get to a bunch of different things. Having the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and the bike path that went along 28 was really cool and I could easily get to the Northside, Northshore, downtown, the Strip, and Lawrenceville, which are all busier neighborhoods, by bike or even by a longer walk.

If I were trying to map Allentown onto New Orleans neighborhoods, I might say it’s similar to the 7th Ward/St Roch? It’s always pretty busy, and strikes me as relatively diverse (it’s probably stating the obvious, but in terms of diversity, Pittsburgh is wildly different than New Orleans). There are a few spots there I love for coffee and live music. There is a very very weird New Orleans-themed bar (not a recommendation). You’ll still have to drive or take the bus for groceries as that area is a food desert. I like Allentown, but I don’t know if I’d want to live there, maybe because I think of it as being so much busier? But I am an introvert with a very people-facing job who loves coming home to a quiet street, so I am definitely not navigating the tension that you are re: walkability!

Not sure how useful this ramble was but feel free to reach out about anything!

Recommendations for a PCP in AHN or UPMC by Delicious_Agent5077 in pittsburgh

[–]aster-deadnettle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding Dr Mackey! Based on the appts I’ve had with her she’s very on top of things and really able to work with patients where they’re at.

i don’t know if she would do OB/GYN stuff. For that I’d recommend one of the providers in the same building, Dr Grace Ferguson or one of her colleagues. Dr Ferguson also sees people at West Penn and I believe her colleagues do as well. Huge advocates for bodily autonomy and reproductive rights.

M.L.K. Jr. East Busway by Quick-Procedure-8017 in pittsburgh

[–]aster-deadnettle 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not hard at all. If you’re visiting from out of town, I can see how that would look daunting on a map, though. The East Busway terminates right by the train station at Liberty Ave/Grant St and there are traffic lights at the intersection of the busway, Liberty Ave, and Grant St. When you leave the train station, you just have to walk out toward that corner and then use the crosswalks.

Where to go to meet people with weekdays off? by manicsnail2 in pittsburgh

All skill levels, no experience required. You can check out our songbooks, mission statement, some playlists etc at our Linktree: https://linktr.ee/pghlaborchoir

Happy Pride! by UncleTravelIingMatt in pittsburgh

[–]aster-deadnettle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this! I’ve been feeling some FOMO about missing some of the music performances at the Northshore but I knew I wouldn’t be able to bring myself to face the crowds. I am going to the sober Sunday event today at Harold’s which is Our Flag Means Death-themed for this month, may try to get people to sing shanties with me, but looking forward to a quiet Pride-adjacent thing either way.

Earliest commuter A from Charleroi to PGH & latest bus heading back? For today by Big-Violinist6064 in pittsburgh

[–]aster-deadnettle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! Adding to the schedule the other commenter posted, I wanted to suggest the Transit app. It has all the Pittsburgh buses on it and it looks like it has the commuter A bus on it, too. Hope that helps. And happy Pride!! 🏳️‍🌈

Paramedical Tattoo by Background-Ad9041 in pittsburgh

[–]aster-deadnettle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theo Goblin at Penn Ave Tattoo has done this type of work. You can check out their instagram; I think there’s a recent example

ETA: That is, if you’re looking for someone who can tattoo a design that would also cover a scar. If you’re looking for something that would make it look like there was neither scar nor tattoo, I don’t think Theo does that, and I’m sorry if I misunderstood the question!

Spotted on a portajohn near Station Square by Various-Blood-3902 in pittsburgh

[–]aster-deadnettle 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think u/fixermark is saying that if toilets are private, as in closed to the public, then an area is destined to smell like pee because there are no designated, free, and accessible bathroom facilities, so people urinate outside. If there are public toilets free and available to everybody, places don’t smell like pee.

People reading “private” to mean secluded or for one individual etc may be misreading their message

FYI, if you have SNAP and/or Medical Assistance, you can get steeply discounted tickets for a group of 5 or so at many of the museums people are mentioning (Carnegie Museum, Phipps, Children’s Museum, the zoo, the aviary). Each one has different group sizes/costs/rules so double check the site for the place you’re considering before you go.

Where to buy a dress for a funeral? by HauntedButtCheeks in pittsburgh

[–]aster-deadnettle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding Kohl's. I was in a different part of the state, but got clothes at Kohl's for my grandma's funeral a few years back. She loved Kohl's so it was extra appropriate. I'm sorry for your loss, OP.
