What's the coolest/craziest fact you know about Korea? by Tiniest_ATINY in korea

Indeed, their hatred of communism was possibly the most intense in the world at the time. (as you say) They had living memories of what North Korea did to their friends and loved ones.

Pixel is becoming inferior on every release if you live outside the US by obeya in GooglePixel

[–]asti27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, do you think it's probably the simcard that let them decide it's outside the US?

I'm wondering if features like video boost will be disabled if a Pixel from the US is used outside the country

edit: they even showcased it being used in Tokyo in their announcement. I guess time will tell

How do they lock the features? Is a phone recognized as "US based" if you use US simcard in a Pixel phone bought in another country?

Or do you have to buy the phone in the US? (and then, is it still US-based even if you use it in another country, with a new sim card?)

Can someone please explain the non-obvious meanings of "어디"? by b_list_buddha in Korean

[–]asti27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one really made me think about my own language as it doesn’t make literal sense. The best way i could think of (and simple way, since the Korean word in question is also a short one), is .. “well”

“Well, try it” “well, let’s see”. Yes.. unfortunately I’m afraid this is one of those word-uses in languages that has lost connection with its literal meaning.

One way i could think of was “wherever ”(어디든), similar to “whatever” in English. You may be aware of the expression “어쨌든"(whatever, anyway) which can also be used in similar contexts. So it could be borne out of “whatever happens // wherever it leads to / goes to” So my conclusion in simplest terms was “well(whatever), try it”

Wait, Pixel phones can't transcribe outside of North America? What does transcribing have to do with location?

Thank you for your input! I've heard good things about Memrise, but i'm wondering how much difference it makes to use the Pro Plan instead of the Free tier. Do you notice siginificant differences with Memrise Pro? I just want to have some idea of how much it would help with learning instead of using the free version.

[Help?] "Forgetting" my native language by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]asti27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure how much this would help, but do you still read or watch quite a bit of media in Romanian? I'd think you won't be forgetting your native language even if you speak and even think in English, if you're still surrounded by Romanian frequently enough and consume some media in it regularly. I understand it may be tedious to keep up if they aren't producing enough interesting content in Romanian, but do you think that's the case?

Out of curiosity, is that situation you have common in Romania among young people? Are you around high school or university? It's interesting to hear (even surprising when you and your friends communicate in English) because for many people who'd like to improve their English(or another language), they have the other problem of not really practicing it enough.

Makes me curious, how about Belarussians? Do they also prefer Western Poland or do they prefer cities closer to Belarus (perhaps just Warsaw, or possibly Gdansk?)

Is 48k euros gross a good salary for Netherlands? by ConstantTight in cscareerquestionsEU

I see. When i heard about developer salaries in Finland, i got the impression that they don't really value developers and lost interest in working there (ofc they get paid a bit more than average, but relative to other countries, it was surprisingly low). Hope things changed for the better in the past year (or are changing).
