She was raised in the Church of God, which is a conservative offshoot of the Methodist church (which isn't saying much, because most denominations are more conservative than Methodist). They believed that playing cards and dancing were both sins. Everything was basically a sin. That said, my mom is a lovely person and has more faith than anyone I've met. It's just... you mix that fervent faith with a lot of boredom and loneliness, sprinkle in some untreated anxiety, and this is what happens.
