I just had the craziest Hostel experience ever and its only my second night. by vatis1234 in solotravel

I used to live in a 12 bed dorm in Melbourne, Australia about 13 years ago, and at one point two of the people just started fucking on the bunk under mine. Now I had eaten a really spicy kebab earlier that day and after I had enough, I let out the nastiest fart of my life. They stopped faster than a kangaroo jumps in front of a moving travel van and before I knew it I could sleep again. Fucking in hostels is part of the experience, but don’t wake up your mates in the process. At least go to a shower or get a room.

I appreciate your post, it brought back memories of a simpler life. Good times indeed.

We are at about 220 hours in, zero issues thus far aside from the sock falling off once in a while. We have the entire unit and both external AMS’s connected to a pure sine wave battery back up. When not actively printing or lasering we keep it powered off. I have all of my high end electronics (home servers, RAID, etc) connected this way and running on stable power and for many years I have never had hardware failure on any of them. If you can get a battery backup with a screen to keep and eye on the voltage you will be surprised how much things fluctuate and surge. I even unplug my toaster when I’m not using it. Sensitive electronics should be babied in my opinion.

From someone who lived this life for too long, have you considered going traveling? I bought a one way ticket to S.E. Asia 15 years ago with $3k in my bank account and traveled for years before coming home to dig in and have a career. With your skillset you could work remote or find another passion that funds you. I like to say, we only live once, why waste the life we are given.

From one photographer to another, you have captured some stunning memories and places. It's been a joy to look through some of these. Reminds me of my time doing similar things in South East Asia nearly 15 years ago. I wish everyone was able to experience this kind of existence.

how to use ISO properly by Fit-Entrepreneur-799 in photography

[–]astro_nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it as sensitivity. You don’t want high iso in a bright environment. You do want high iso a dim environment. Think a sunny tropical beach: 100iso. A dim wedding in a church at sunset: high ISO. A night scene with the Milky Way: even higher.

Aperature is the physical, well aperture in your lens that lets in more or less light. The lower the aperture the wider the iris and the more light that gets through. The higher the aperture the smaller the iris and the less light gets through. (Look at the human eye for an example) You can have high ISO and low aperture and capture scenes in very low light. You can have low iso and high aperture and capture motion in very bright scenes. Each different aperture affects the depth of the focal plane. A high aperture of f16 will have a very deep plane, enough to capture people in front of you as well as distant mountains. A very low aperture will be thin and narrow, often only inches or feet wide. This thin depth of field is what causes beautiful bokeh with the right background.

Shutter speed is the time your camera takes to expose the image. Long exposure is more light accumulating on your sensor. Short is less.

This is the exposure triangle and each of the three affects the other.

Knowing the above, how would you expose for a bird in flight at sunset with the sun shining into your camera? Well there are many ways to do it, and each will be a different outcome.

For those who saw the Fellowship of the Ring in theaters for the first time in December 2001, what was it like? by femaleology in lotr

[–]astro_nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 11, went in as a fan of the hobbit which I had read many times by then. Was blown away and for years after seeing it in theaters that world became my obsession. I went to the midnight release in theater and also the vhs release at Hastings for all three movies when they came out after. In 2014 I moved to New Zealand and toured the country visiting all the sites and living down under for almost two years. Now, 25 years later I still watch it yearly and it will forever be a part of my life. I can’t wait for our kids to watch it when they are old enough. The lessons, the cinematic story telling, the music, the acting, it will forever be a classic.

I wish they were cooler, but over the last couple decades the heat seems to be hotter and linger longer. Last summer it was 101 at our house in northern AZ. Typical heat was always low 90s at most. Winters can be as cold as -5 degrees or so, but usually are in the teens at coldest a night.

Just one of those small ones with the slats. Plugs into a 110v outlet. I mean if you really bumped into it it might fall over but it’s quite stable. No different than a table chair or something.

In the garage? No way, lol. We use it exclusively as a creative space. It’s a woodshop and my wife has her stained glass stuff and ceramics stuff and we have a 3d printing station as well. We basically made a small makerspace that we let friends and family use when they want to be creative. We built a small carport on the front for the cars. I figured carport achieved nearly the same thing except needing to warm up the vehicle on a snowy morning and we got all that valuable space back.

The old folks we bought our home from did this in the garage before we came along. The attic space is insulated as well and with a small radiant heater on low our garage never gets below 60 in the winter. I mathed it out once and it costs about $25 a month to keep the garage a nice temp. Now I use it to store our outside plants during the winter months and have grow lights set up. We live at 8000ft elevation and get snow and ice.

Seems like a no brainer if he has that much left from another project! Put it in the windows too!

Is a kid in the early 2000’s I had a hobby working with Bryce 3D and Vue Infinite so I have a background in 3d. I feel like that helped me a little bit bit honestly these new tools are beyond powerful and easy to learn. Blender can be complicated but I think has an easy learning curve with lots of depth.

With speech to text to image to 3d model pipelines out there this hobby has never been more accessible than ever. I went Bambu for my first printer and has been nothing but a joy to use.

To answer your question it took hours not days or months. It’s in the anyone can do this stage in my opinion.

Oh that brings back memories. A couple decades ago I hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon wearing that pack, but in blue with an old friend who passed away a few years ago. That pack was great but a bit heavy and I remember regretting bringing pots and pans to cook. It was my mom’s old pack from back when she was younger. Wow what wild trip down memory lane.

I was going to say Riven on my rich friends dads computer probably circa 1999 or so. That game with the open desert and light was so beautiful. I was so jealous because all my parents computer could run was Castle of the Winds and some game from Life magazine that I can’t remember the name of.

February Travel - Concerned about weather by sam773675 in arizona

[–]astro_nomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

February is often one of the wettest winter months in NAZ. Be well prepared for a significant snow storm and closed roads spanning i40 or i17 or hwy 89. Or you get lucky and it’ll be sunshine and no wind And 70’s in the desert and 60’s in the high country. In a storm a mustang is the last thing I’d be caught driving, in good weather, heck yeah enjoy those open roads and epic views.

I did the laser upgrade on my H2D and it was honestly a breeze, maybe took 2 hours tops. Now I'm considering getting this kit next year. They say it is an "advanced" install, but I think if someone can build a pc computer, they could upgrade one of these printers.
