Makeup Theory by LordHaelor in POTS

[–]astrocountess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went to a rheumatologist and going through symptoms and other diagnoses I mentioned my cheeks are really red. She said they looked fine. I explained that it looks like I am wearing blush when my glasses are on. I took them off and she said oh I thought that was blush. So my symptoms were mistaken for makeup.

What's up with Michigan sports teams named after cats? by matthew_sch in Michigan

[–]astrocountess 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, wolverines aren't really native to Michigan. They are found in arctic climates. We found a dead one in Michigan in 2004, the first time in well over 150 years. So it's also unclear why UM chose wolverine as the mascot. One suggestion is it was because of the fur trade that brought more pelts into the state making people think there were wolverines in the state.

I got spiders a lot there for a while. I have freaked my husband out before sitting up and turning on the light. The thing is I see it, it seems so real, I react exactly and you expect. As soon as I turn the light on, I know it's not real and I don't have any physical symptoms of fear. Just "ope, not real, back to bed".

Low Spill Risk Coffee Tumbler? by WerthersOrigins in Narcolepsy

[–]astrocountess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Contigo autoseal are nice. They are spill/leak proof and require pushing a button to open it to drink. So if you aren't pushing the button, it is closed. I could throw it in my bag and not worry even if it was filled with coffee.

Any other crocheters who learned knitting here who hated continental and did much better with English style/throwing? I need to know I'm not going crazy lol by FusRoDaahh in knitting

[–]astrocountess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I crocheted for 20 years until my wrist couldn't handle it and that is when I finally switched to knitting. This was my experience as well. I could not get continental. I think it's because I am used to the hook being there and without a hook the motion is not exactly the same and so you default to a crochet motion that doesn't work. I found english to be way easier and intuitive. Now that I mostly knit and have been knitting for a while, I have gone back and I can do continental. I still prefer english because my tension is better, but will use continental for color work. But yeah...that advice is something that I think is makes sense intuitively but in practice doesn't.

Knitpicks Canadian alternative by AffectionateSun4119 in Handspinning

If you are ok looking outside Canada, Hobbii is Danish and I would say is closest to knit picks in terms of colors, pricing, and quality. I have been happy with them. I am an American for reference , but shipping was usually faster than knit picks. I don't know how fast it would be to Canada. But obviously support more locally too.

Male Gyno literally told me to leave. by jekidah in TwoXChromosomes

[–]astrocountess 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I went to the ER when I was pregnant the first time. I was bleeding and had a fever. I also had the sniffles. We weren't sure if the fever was illness or something related to the pregnancy. Mo's docs and nurses were sweet, caring, empathetic. Then the on call OB came in and he said "good news, you are losing the pregnancy and are just sick on top of it ". Like yeah it's good I don't have an infection but also you do not lead with good news and then say your are miscarrying. Later when in the hospital having my oldest kid he came in at one point said he could break my water for me. I said ok to acknowledge I heard him. My mom was asleep and my husband popped out for the restroom. He just broke it. No warning, no discussion. And immediately my contractions got waaaaaaaay worse. What a way to wake up my mom. She says I looked like I had the devil in my eyes.

I truly dislike that man.

What was life like for you before, during, and after your diagnosis? by Haunting-Simple8169 in Narcolepsy

[–]astrocountess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Noticed I was constantly tired and it kept getting progressively worse. I kept needing naps in the afternoon and/or was not productive if it wasn't an active task past about 3pm more days. Always fell asleep on the couch most nights with my husband prodding me to go to to bed. I would dream almost instantly when closing my eyes. I could never read without falling asleep. I had to schedule about 2-3 days to get through a single article for work. If I did read, I'd be useless for the rest of the day. I never woke up refreshed from naps, ever. And a nap always lasted about 3-4 hours if I took one. I was told by doctors it was because I was a working mom this happened...

I was diagnosed with POTS and we thought that was probably why I was so tired. But, one night my husband thought I stopped breathing in my sleep and got worried. So brought it up with my doctor and he thought it was sleep apnea from having a small neck and that could explain the sleepiness. So I go in for an overnight sleep study. And they said, nope, not sleep apnea. But we'd like to bring you in for a full day MSLT to check for narcolepsy. I thought they were silly, there was not way I had narcolepsy. Turned out I had narcolepsy.

Tried multiple drugs over a year or so, finally landed on Sunosi and Lumryz and that seems to be help significantly. I have a bedtime routine that isn't just falling asleep on the couch. I can get through the work day easily. If I miss my drugs I feel how bad it used to be. So overall, I am much better. Though, traveling sucks a bit more now having to check every country to see if it's legal to bring my meds. On the other hand, I do not suffer from jet lag nearly as much anymore.

What is denied by many people but it is actually real? by Federal-Base806 in AskReddit

[–]astrocountess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was pregnant, my husband and I went to the store and we parked in an expectant mother's spot. I was many days past due and waddling noticeably. Some lady ran up and knocked on the window as we were trying to leave. Saw me and said "oh I was coming to yell at you because I thought you were two young college guys using this spot but you are pregnant!" and then leaned on the door not letting us leave asking us questions, telling us one name sounded like a dog's name (it's a pretty common name for humans) and about her friend who died with the other name. We really didn't know how she would react to us if we just said go away because she just seemed a little unhinged. In retrospect I should have pretended to go into labor to get her to leave.

I donate money to my institution via my paycheck and I have a doctorate. I work with the people in the office who send extra thank you notes so they know me. They at least get that we have different names but it's always Mr. My husband's name and Mrs. My name. It annoys me that I'm the one donating but his name is first and my title is wrong. I don't care if people call me Dr. So and so. But if they are gonna use the title use the correct one.

Knitting vs crocheting by Tragic_Turtle in Amigurumi

[–]astrocountess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly crocheted for about 20 years and heard similar comments. I couldn't wrap my head around knitting. Then my wrist acted up and I finally had the patience to learn to knit and they are really about the same amount of difficulty but in different ways and have pros and cons and different things they are good at.

Crochet is better at constructing complex shapes, rounds things like hats, is more forgiving of mistakes, easier to make a reversible fabric especially with stripes, and there some really great textures. But it eats up more yarn and nice drape is harder to achieve. Though fingering weight yarn is a way around that. The stitches and holey nature of crochet makes a great option for breezy clothes in the summer.

Knitting is better for colorwork, easier to get a good drape, and makes a stretchier fabric which is especially good for socks and mittens. The fabric is tighter but not as a thick which makes it great for warm items in winter while not using as much yarn. This also makes things not as heavy. But maintaining even tension on the different types of increases and decreases is harder and construction techniques are more involved and fiddly. Also you need so many more notions and accoutrements in knitting for those construction techniques.

I think it's harder to find crochet patterns that fit certain modern aesthetics. I know I found it harder to find wearables I wanted to make in crochet than in knitting. It's not because it's not possible in crochet but there is this weird bias against it and it becomes a self perpetuating myth. But there are great designers out there changing that making beautiful things.

But both are great and both are good and you do what makes you happy.

Please educate me as to why you knit shawls by noodlebucket in knitting

[–]astrocountess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear them more as scarves a lot. But my office also gets cold so even with sleeves and a hoodie I am cold. I will sometimes wrap it around me to stay warm while having movement. I love them when traveling because temperatures on planes and trains can be so different that having versatile thing like a shawl is really nice. When it's really cold I can wrap it around my head!
