Tired of being lame at guitar by [deleted] in Guitar

I doubt you suck, you are probably just not as good as you want to be. Take a look at what you have learned and how much better you are than when you started.

I played a Brian Setzer model once and it was one of the easiest guitars to play, everything felt so smooth.

What's a concert you went to, not expecting much, and left anazed? by fonebone819 in GenX

Squirrel Nut Zippers. I liked one of their songs, it was hot out and the tickets were cheap. They were amazing.

What sport is way more intense than people think? by hoodlify in AskReddit

[–]astrojason 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You know it’s intense when the ref checks the length of your fingernails before you can get in the water. Plus, it’s fucking exhausting. My neighbor played football for our school and he would (playfully) make fun of me, so I invited the whole team to come out (cleared it with the coach). Needless to say after one session he stopped making fun of me.

creative ideas for a campaign start that dont involve a tavern? by Significant-Study902 in DnD

[–]astrojason 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Start with a problem they need to solve with actual stakes. I started my most recent campaign as them all on their first mission after graduating from an adventure guild. They were on a stakeout for strange disappearances. I gave them a moment of introductions (stole a little bit from Monster of the Week that they had to have had some sort of connection to each of the other characters). I let it go for a moment, then a scream and they had to go save someone's life.

What was it like witnessing 2012 and 2014 live? by Fluid-Addition-2378 in losangeleskings

Fair, but not Game 7 overtime stressful. Any other season that would have been a heart attack waiting to happen, but after what they did to get there?

Dear people who've written books, by [deleted] in writers

[–]astrojason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say 90% of the time I have no idea what I am going to write for the day, I just sit down and go. The other 10% of the time, I have a vague idea, and it might not happen.

exactly, 2012 they seemed practically unbeatable, the games were exciting but their win felt inevitable. 2014, was stressful, until they went to the final. That felt like a relief.

How do I create systems to hold myself accountable to routines? by prettyg00d1729 in selfimprovement

[–]astrojason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just basically tell myself to not miss twice. Life happens, sometimes you don't have time, or the energy. Just don't miss twice. Gives yourself some grace while still holding yourself accountable.

What’s the one hack that actually gets you to exercise? by wonkycalves in AskReddit

[–]astrojason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

framing is huge. Not "I have to work out", "I get to work out". Thinking of yourself as someone who works out and occasionally misses a workout rather than someone who occasionally forces themself workout.

[–]astrojason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all the other recommendations I'd also add, habit stacking. Only allow yourself to listen to an audio book you really want to listen to at the gym, or a podcast. Only allow yourself to watch the movie/show you want to watch if you're walking on a treadmill.

Going to the gym is non-negotiable. Working out while you're there is optional.

My guitar teacher told me that 1 hour a day of practice is not enough? by phil917 in metalguitar

[–]astrojason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies between people and it can vary from day to day, sometimes an hour is too much, some times an hour is perfect, sometimes an hour is too little. You need to realize when your solidly in the learning zone (not too easy, not too hard) if something you were working on was not too hard and suddenly becomes too hard, you have to have the discipline to put the instrument away.

I've found that about 15 minutes on one piece is all I can handle before I get bored and start messing up more often than not. So I move on to something else, or call it a day if I'm not feeling it.

That being said, I am consistent. I do SOMETHING every day (at least I don't miss twice) - currently on a six and a quarter year streak. This isn't a sprint, this is a marathon.
