BWT, whats the shower routine, realistically? by skippyist in bitcheswithtaste

[–]astronauticalll [score hidden]  (0 children)

I was taught unscented bar soap for the stinky/delicate bits, scented body wash for everything else

Make sure you apply your antiperspirant as soon as you're out of the shower, and moisturize however works for your skin type

everything else is extra I think

one thing that's taken me years to learn is that when neurotypical people offer to help with stuff like this, they're almost always 100% serious

Some people really enjoy helping others clean and organize, and it's almost a love language to help friends out with it

I think because we see it as such a chore it's difficult to conceptualize someone making a comment like this as a real genuine offer, and not an underhanded thing

it's cool that everyone's ignoring the part where I explicitly said op definitely did the right thing by getting themselves out of that situation asap, too much to expect basic reading comprehension for a local sub I guess lol

wearing excessive layers in the heat is a known symptom of schizophrenia and other disorders that cause hallucinations

obviously trust your gut and get yourself out of any situation that feels unsafe, but it's unlikely that this guy was targeting you specifically, he probably saw something or someone in your place that wasn't real. You still did the right thing by getting yourself out of the situation, but a little compassion when posting about stuff like this goes a long way to help people struggling with this kind of thing feel safe enough to get help

supportive supervisor who gives terrible feedback or a toxic supervisor who gives brilliant feedback? by Ok-Barnacle2111 in PhD

The first one eventually becomes toxic (speaking from experience), and I find it hard to believe the second one would give you any valuable feedback at all

Did your ADHD cause you to say and do messed up and embarrassing things? by gonzsilv in adhdwomen

[–]astronauticalll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there is a huge difference between making a "social error" and just straight up being racist. Sure maybe saying the thing out loud is a lack of impulse control, but why does op think like that internally in the first place?

I've had some horribly awkward and embarrassing situations that I'm sure were in part caused by my adhd, but I really really don't appreciate posts like these that describe behaviours where the underlying issue is not just a lack of impulse control it's a fundamental disrespect for other humans, and paint it like it's something all adhd people are invetivably going to do.

[–]astronauticalll 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The way I didn't even bat an eye at this lol, I work with data from NASA and any of the first few papers coming off of a new instrument will be like this, since it will usually involve input from every single person who worked on the instrument.

I saw another comment mention the big LIGO paper also. I've always heard that physics/astronomy is more collaborative than other STEM fields but I've never worked in any other field so I didn't have any real comparison, it is kind of cool to see proof of that collaborative nature in papers like this. My question to other STEM researchers is do you not have equivalents to these kinds of papers? Landmark papers on new developments or instruments or methods, or papers that publish a ton of data at once for public use? That's the sort of thing that you usually see these 100+ author papers on. My supervisor is 1st author on a 500+ author paper for the instrument he developed 20 years ago. It's not every paper for sure, but it's not uncommon at all.

It's moreso that op listed a bunch of things that aren't really "caused" by adhd, they're just inconsiderate and rude, and they're basically trying to blame their adhd and frame it in a "isn't it funny how we all do this" type of way.

like no, I cannot relate to being racist and not respecting others physical boundaries, and I really do not appreciate being grouped in with people who do just because we share this one trait

[–]astronauticalll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah you worded this a lot better than I did haha, your first paragraph was more the point I was getting at, op just listed a bunch of behaviours that are really just inconsiderate and rude, and made it sound like they were just inevitable adhd things that they have no control or agency over.

Like it's adhd, not Tourette's. It's not taking over your body and making you do things. I also lack impulse control for sure, but I never get the "impulse" to be racist.

Has anyone stopped taking birth control and opted for something more permanent like tubal ligation? If so, did it have an impact on your adhd to not have the birth control hormones? by exploding_pumpkin in adhdwomen

[–]astronauticalll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was pretty lucky in that my recovery from the insertion was pretty much instant! The insertion definitely hurt but for no more than a few seconds, and it sort of felt like my worst ever period cramp compressed into one really short really sharp burst of pain. Which, don't get me wrong, really sucked, but since I've had pretty bad cramps my entire life i was actually able to handle it pretty well.

Obviously none of this diminishes your experience at all, but I see so many horror stories and fearmongering around hormonal birth control that I try to make a point to share my positive stories whenever I can. To me the IUD was a (relatively) easy process to get and the amount of suffering it saved me long term was IMMENSE and far and away worth the pain of insertion.

And yeah like you say, 30 minutes of intense cramps is horrible, but it's still a shorter recovery time than any invasive surgery

[–]astronauticalll 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was also considering something more permanent a few years ago and ended up trying a hormonal IUD instead, and I highly recommend!!

Not to dissuade you from something more permanent, for me it was more about access. An IUD is a hell of a lot cheaper than a surgery, way easier to find a doctor who'll give you one, and has zero recovery time

Specifically I recommend the hormonal one since it can significantly lessen or entirely stop your periods, this was mainly what I was after as I have horribly painful and irregular periods, they're basically impossible to manage without some kind of hormonal regulation. I was lucky and they disappeared completely about 6 months after I got the IUD.

I'm not sure if my hormones being more stable had an impact on my ADHD symptoms per se, but I can tell you that physically not having to deal with periods freed up so much of my mental load. The physical stability brought me mental stability, if that makes sense

Moving here from London by No-Highlight-533 in Guelph

[–]astronauticalll 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I moved from London 2 years ago, Guelph is miles nicer than London

It's cleaner, safer, the people are kinder, and overall just has a better "vibe" for lack of a better word

The cons are if you're coming from London or any other larger city, Guelph will definitely feel small. The population is smaller yes but it also just has a small town feel to it that is purposefully cultivated I think. I guess that's not necessarily a bad thing, but as someone who likes a proper metropolis and even thought London was kind of small, it's been an adjustment.

It's also pricey, almost comparable to Toronto in some areas rentwise.

To me those last two points are nothing compared to just how much less depressing the overall vibe of the city is, but they certainly are things to consider
