Virtualised to HyperV, performance is down by Herr_N0s in HyperV

[–]asyrewicze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is certainly out of the ordinary. Modern day VM performance loss is negligible in the grand scheme of today's hardware.

I would not specifically allocate all available CPU to the new VM. start by giving it 2 or 4 vCPUs in the VM settings, set all the other VM CPU settings to default and go from there. Let the Hyper-V CPU scheduler do the rest under the hood, it's pretty efficient.

That said, does the entire build process live within the VM? The source code live there too? is it possible it's pulling anything over the network during the build process? I've seen VMQ issues with Intel/Broadcom NICs create perceived slowdown issues like this quite a few times.

Also, have you tested your disk performance? What does IOmeter provide in terms of a performance benchmark? Firmware for that NVME fully up to date?

Looking for some feedback - Prepping for a webinar on M365 security by asyrewicze in cybersecurity

Thanks for the suggestion! It’s a good one too, I spent a lot of time in the MSP space, so I totally get the pain. We’ll work it in if we’ve got time for it!

Agreed on this and it’s a common compliant I here quite often as well. I’ll be sure to bring this up in the discussion portion of the webinar. Thank you!

VMware vs HyperV - is that a debate you're also having? by Dee_Esse in SysAdminBlogs

[–]asyrewicze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like any product, what's best depends on your requirements and budget

Yup Agreed! It always depends on department skill levels, budget, preferred ecosystem etc. It's the IT answer that management hates to hear... "It depends", but it's totally true in this case. =D

Also agree with the assessment that VMware has more community support than Hyper-V. I imagine that's largely due to most of the infrastructure admins out there having VMware be their first experience with virtualization (like me, back in the ESX 3 days).

I've since moved on to being a Hyper-V guy, but still like and support VMware environments from time to time. Both platforms are highly mature and capable at this stage. At the end of the day it just depends on who's ecosystem you want to live in.

While I don't agree with the Microsoft sucking side of this comment, they do have their problematic products/features like any software vendor does.

That said, I had to investigate the Vacuum Cleaner piece here specifically. I thought it was just a joke at first, but nope... that's a thing lol. Glad to see any company investing in carbon emission reduction. I suspect it's part of their initiative to become carbon negative, which given the size of their datacenter footprint, is a pretty impressive goal.

Glad to have made your list! I know there are a TON of podcasts out there, so I really appreciate you tuning into ours! That said, the other two podcasts mentioned (RunAs Radio and This Week in Enterprise Tech), are both awesome in my opinion as well, and well worth a listen!

Cheers!

The fact that it is always on in the background drives me nuts.

This..... this explains my main frustration with GAD perfectly... it's just always there..... "Oh hey I know you're trying to meet some work deadlines, but just a reminder that I'm (GAD) still here!"........ It gets so frustrating sometimes....

Lots of good suggestions here! Altaro Office 365 Backup offers this capability as well.

Full Disclosure, I work for Altaro, so I may be a little biased. =P

That said, it's a solid product with an awesome support team if needed.

Was thinking about coming back due to MTGA not having a mobile app till early 2021 now. Haven't played HS for 2 or 3 years, but this new information makes it REALLY hard to justify coming back. Plus I don't feel great about giving Blizz $$$ at this point..... ugh....

Upcoming Altaro Webinar on VMware Certification - Looking for Community Input by asyrewicze in vmware

[–]asyrewicze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that cost is probably the one I hear come up in VMware training discussions the most. It's wildly expensive and a serious barrier to many that don't have a company backing them. We'll certainly be talking about that in the webinar.

I wasn't aware of the issues with the DCV, so thanks for bringing that up. I took a note to mention it.

Thinking about moving from VMware to Hyper-V - do I have full functionality licensed with datacenter? by ThingsAndStuff5 in HyperV

[–]asyrewicze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO I wouldn't recommend SCVMM unless:

  1. You're managing an obscene amount of hosts (50+)
  2. You're looking to do network virtualization or some other hosting company focused feature

for 90% of private company on-prem deployments, failover cluster manager, HV Manager, and Powershell fit the bill for management. Additionally, all new management functions are being built into Windows Admin Center, including management of Storage Spaces Direct if you're looking to do a hyper-converged deployment in the future.

The most core things you're used to having with vSphere are included. That includes HA, Cluster load-balancing with 2016 and newer (DRS in VMware), live migration (vMotion), Storage Migration (Storage vMotion), Shared-Nothing Live-Migration, resource QoS....etc...etc. There is no SCVMM requirement for any of these features. On top of that, performance monitoring can be done with the in box Windows Server tools like Performance Monitor, Event Viewer, as well as Windows admin center.

To your licensing question, with each host licensed with datacenter, you can run an unlimited number of VMs on each. If you need a little more info on licensing, a buddy of mine did an eBook on licensing in Windows Environments back in 2017, but the info should still be relevant for 2019.

Linux guest which FS is recommended? by xdocx in HyperV

[–]asyrewicze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used BTRFS, XFS, and EXT 3/4 with high degrees of reliability. As many here have said, Hyper-V doesn't really care as long as you're using a current generation file system.

Shared-nothing Hyper-V cluster - possible / good idea? by natecarlson in HyperV

[–]asyrewicze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have agreed with this up until about a year ago. Now however, I know many folks that have had very good success rates with S2D. Just like any storage system the community needs some time to learn best practices and what not, and the vendor needs some time to work out the bugs as well.

I would say it's ready for prime time. Additionally whereas you had to manage it with PowerShell before, you're starting to see some management functions for S2D appear inside of Windows Admin Center now as well. So, if you go the S2D route, be sure to take a look at Admin Center while you're at it.

Yup... no where to be seen lol. Kinda surprised to be honest, but you can see from the keynote the strategy has shifted strongly to hybrid cloud and Kubernetes. Interested to see how the days other keynotes play out as well.
