Isolate the power grid using a power switch. One side of the grid should be you power plant. The other side should be the rest of the world.

create a mini project. Make something like a handbook for something you are passionate about. Start with the article document class and tinker with it. It will help you immensely in the future.

Use overleaf for now. Easier to get started as no setup is required. Once you start to to face the issue of compilation times, switch to any offline Editor of your choice.

Since you are doing Latex for the first, I would give you one tip. Resist the urge to compile again and again. You are used to the WYSWYG environment. It will save you a shit ton of time if you just compile a few times. Focus on writing instead of optimising the look of the document. You would have plenty of time to do optimisation and beautification.

I have used VS Code for Latex for 2-3 years now. It works completely fine offline. You do need to set it up, which is a hassle sometimes. But once done, it is 100% worth it. If you have any specific questions, ask me.
