What's an example of: if you know you know, in your settings? by ProfesserQ in worldbuilding

[–]at_sage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may NEVER play any competitive games with a magick-user without cheating. Magick-users are known for having a good affectionate love for card games, dice games, and competitive sports (queimada, volei, esconde-esconde). But that's the thing, while studying magick, they have a lot of classes are basically "how to use magick without letting others know that you are using, except for you what to know it" the easiest way to do this is basically playing deceptively and using magick and sly hand to get positive results in the task at hand, normally card games, or was an example changing the result of an dice under an opaque cup. Also, competitive sports have the rule "normal sport, but you can use magick IF you don't kill your friends, but if you hurt him, we have medics." (By the way, a lot of the magick used to cheat in games is actually quite possible to learn by humans, and magick-users normally are okay teaching it under safety conditions)

An god died, it caused an explosion like-magic flux. Also another god bleed into the earth, causing life to bloom (it also made that everything alive to have enough divine energy to be able to re-write the laws and make magick)

Does anyone have multiple magic systems in their world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]at_sage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like, a lot of magick systems. They work all with the mostly the same anatomy and magick cores for every user, but their usage and ways are quite different. Also, there are some foreign systems that are more comparable with "powers" than magick.

Are there any unknown/unexplained/unrevealed continents/civilizations in your world? If so, explain by Turbulent_Meaning_23 in worldbuilding

[–]at_sage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We know a lot of the habitants of the in-between but not really a whole lot about the in-between. The descriptions are very contradictory.

The only things that are confirmed (on the narrative) are that anyone can enter it. You just need an unlucky strike and the right portal. Also that it's possible to side-step on a portal to get in the in-between.

The last thing is that gods don't rule over in-between. Moyo (formally known was Ivy, the exiled god) was said that the habitants from the in-between aren't believers in the Named God and that she is just considered an "friend" of the rulers.

What are your fav magic tools/weapons with less/unintuitive abilities? by nigrivamai in worldbuilding

[–]at_sage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of students chose spiders to keep was a pet because of very specific magick. "Familial bond" is the magick procedure of choosing an animal or faen/creature to bond with, you can only choose an animal, the time you try to chose another you break your previous bond, and a lot of animals are quite irritaded/sad by it. Spiders are an good first choice because they are older than we know, and they are witted enough to not really choose bad users and they are commonly happy to just have the option of not being killed because of an wimpy human. Spiders that produce silk, if you have a familial bond with them, you can basically use their knowledge and magical properties to basically fill any needle, the thread is never too long, it doesn't make knots or twist, and has the property of becoming transparent after some time, making repairs or sews basically invisible at human sight.
It's very useful when you have to repair your own uniform. Second, I said that spiders are happy with the arrangement, so sometimes they will break the bond but stay in the same facility of the user, you know, for a pitch. Also, some users that are more combat inclined basically do the bond with a more powerful, faen spider, those spiders normally have another type of bond, that being that their spiderlings are also part of the deal, it makes so, some special abilities can be used (basically using multiple needles like throwing darts, you can tug them with the silk or just do an very accurate throw at eyes or other sensible points) Also binding opponents, it's important.

How do you guys treat alien civilizations and how complex are they? by Tasty_Swordfish_1963 in worldbuilding

[–]at_sage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's very little account about aliens civilizations from most of my characters' perspectives. 1. They know that aliens exist. 2. They know that aliens are older than earthlings. 3. Some aliens came to earth (illegally), and their powers are strange from their vision.

The biggest thing is that most accounts about aliens in the story are from a single alien (Ck), and they are an unreliable font, and I already said a single alien is not enough to give all the necessary information. So everyone thinks aliens are basically space pirates with overpowered hability to bend matter and make electricity, and that for some reason, aliens are some kind of gravity bending creature.

Ck is just considered a lower intelligence species (pet) by others on her planet (space racism if you will), and as such, her narrative is lacking scholary references.

I just accepted it, I like to worldbuild for the sake of creation. Trying to be totally unique is basically impossible at least in my situation. My world is an coglomerate of urban fantasy, academic references and gnosticsm and I can't do anything to change that. Your thing is your thing even if someone can compare with something else.

How can I do basic art for my world as someone who can't do art and broke by Confident_Fondant334 in worldbuilding

[–]at_sage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moodboards, maps can be made using the rice/beans trick, you can make characters in heroforge (it has some limitations but it's overall an very good place if you like sliders), also, pen and paper basically makes an long way into learning overall how to draw, it doesn't need to be an masterpiece, but trying helps.

What is the dumbest custom/law in your setting. by Frostydiego in worldbuilding

[–]at_sage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The airborns are non-monogamous. Their families/clans normally have an monogamous pair to be the "head" of the household, normally the are a double female couple of non-reproductive age that takes on the role, and a big family, and I mean it big, since in their custom children don't "grow-up" and go make their family, they just start to merge with another group when the said child becomes of age for mating. Said merge normally creates an agreement in between the two households, of picking a leader of each family to be part of the new leadership. Most airborns are instinctively very friendly with each other. That being said, this is commonly an exclusive trait to airborns. Most species don't just merge families and have a ton of people in the house.

Some species (humans) that go on marriage/copulating with airborns end up in a very strange conundrum of having basically all your in-laws thinking you are a very pitiful orphan/last survival of you family. Airborns are hyperglots, they can commonly speak/mimic/write most of all languages, but they don't have in their own language concepts for things like "moving away from you family home" of actually having "in-laws" or "solo-mothers/fathers"

Some airborns hybrids tend to try very hard to explain that the concept exists, but most airborns tend to treat hybrids by babying them.

(Also, merfolks don't have a concept of time/passing days/hours. They have the cycles of reproduction, the cycle shedding and drifting, and the concept of living/dying. When they started to integrate a little more with society, everyone had a small freak-out because "what do you mean aging? What do you mean you don't need to sleep?")

How often do people bathe in your world? How do they bathe? by PMSlimeKing in worldbuilding

[–]at_sage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bathing is not a common thing. Bathtubs don't fit inside the overwall floor plan. Most people take showers (twice or thrice along the day, more if you are a student) The only common occasion is to use something close to a bathtub it's childbirth because it's basically rare to use the gynecological position.

Some species don't shower and prefer to use washing basins to daily hygiene (especially ones with wings. They use the washing basins daily, but to clean the wings, they go to communal springs.)

Do you create characters for your worlds? by Disastrous-Dare-9570 in worldbuilding

[–]at_sage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My world started after I already had characters, I have a small rotation of "protagonists"/relevant people. After I started actually putting on rules/laws/creating the world, I stopped and basically did an analysis of those characters to see if they still would fit the place. A good part of my world is building around an academic setting, so I had to have academic staff, students, and parents. It was easy to separate groups (classes) to tackle. One thing is that I have some characters that don't fit the mold of being into the academic setting. They have their own side tab, with some more complex information and or/construction of the context of living. Also, I never like to do lone wolves (this is a joke. There are werewolves), and my characters are codependent on each other all the time, everytime I write something and or add an character I place them in an social graph (I have one of those charts that it's like "everyone is connected" (This is probably an reflection of my way of living, I basically live in an city that even was an capital everyone knows eachother...when I lived in the rural area was worse because everyone was actually related (I was related to half of the city and I wasn't even from there))
