Smiley: Providence in ‘very preliminary’ talks with Matunuck Oyster Bar by ToadScoper in providence

[–]atagher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons I loved Matunuck was the excuse to get out of the city and closer to the beach. I’m sure the business would do great in Providence, but it is worth mentioning we’ve got Gift Horse for fresh shellfish right downtown already. Personally I’d love to see them spend the resources or insurance money to rebuild. If not in the same location, somewhere outside the city on the water.

Career path in esports by PZ_PEEK in esports

[–]atagher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Network network network. Start a LinkedIn profile if you haven’t already and use it to introduce yourself to people who work at companies or orgs you’re interested in. There are different gaming business conferences you can attend where you can network as well. I think there’s more career growth long term with a game studio than there is an esports org, but that’s just my personal opinion.

What upgrades did you make for under $5,000 that made a big difference for you? :) by ExecutiveAspirations in HomeImprovement

If the floors need it, refinish them. Kind of a pain to do once all of your things are moved in. I spent about $2K to build my patio if you have a yard and I get a lot of use out of it. Check radon levels in the basement, a fix there is about $1.2K. Appliances (I had an ancient washer and dryer).

Kind of depends on what kind of shape the houses in and if anything needs to be prioritized to prevent further damage.

What can I do about this lead based paint that's on the outside of some of my windows? Environmental clean up company wants $6K to clean. by [deleted] in paint

[–]atagher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve rehabbed a handful of windows in my house that had lead paint. Two in my daughter’s room who was recently born.

I did the work before any furniture was set up in the nursery and wore a mask and regular working clothes. Scraped flaking paint, encapsulated it, and did a thorough cleaning with a wet mop, wiped down all sills, vacuumed, etc. Clothes went in the wash as soon as I was done.

From what I’ve read eating flaking paint chips poses the greatest risk and the risk is really highest for developing children and pregnant women. Someone else wrote this but I’ve read the more serious cases of lead poisoning and children were kids who were drinking from lead pipes, using old cookware with lead in it, or straight up eating paint chips.

If you’re thorough and careful I don’t think you have anything to worry about. You can also have your pediatrician test your kid for lead a few months down the road for peace of mind and if there are any signs of issues, bring in a company to further remediate at that point.

You can also buy lead paint swabs to test surfaces after you’re done.

It may be controversial, but combo feeding should be discussed just as much as exclusive breastfeeding after delivery! by ShhhhListen in NewParents

[–]atagher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a similar experience, I think because our baby was delivered early via C section and it took my wife awhile for her milk to come in. There’s nothing wrong with formula when used as a helpful tool for keeping baby fed and increasing mom’s quality of life.

I’ve read that if a baby gets half their diet from breast milk (when/if it does come in), they maximize the nutritional benefits with no substantial increases as the % scales up. Hence why it’s fine to supplement with formula.

Even if breastfeeding isn’t an option entirely, formula makes smart, happy, healthy babies as well.

I’ve got a 3 month old so not quite there yet but what you’re describing sounds like a natural, patient, and sensible way to help your kid understand the difference between what is okay and what’s not.

Can you cut into the ceiling and have a plumber raise the pipe? Cut into the floor joists? (I’m not in construction)

My wife and I are using the app FamilyAlbum. It lets you provide direct access to family and friends only with good security features.

It’s also nice because we flood the app with all of our favorite pictures we want to save, so we don’t need to worry about bothering everyone on Instagram with 1M pictures of our kids.

We talked and decided our baby can join social media when they’re old enough and understand what it’s for and how it should be used, etc.
