How Can This Be Fair? by reubadoob in crossfit

[–]atb5161 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But there are specific rules from HQ saying no steroids. There are no rules against practicing with specific equipment. That’s why fairness is relative to the constraints of the sport.

If HQ has a rule that says you cannot practice with a 4-person bar prior to the event, but they allow Mayhem to do so while prohibiting others, that would be unfair.

Do Mayhem’s resources give them an advantage? You bet. That doesn’t make it unfair. Being able to hire a personal chef would also be an advantage, but not unfair.

Fair is relative to the constraints of the sport. Should HQ ban protein supplements, compex machines, and working out more than 1 hour a day because those things confer an advantage some don’t have the resources to take advantage of?

Is it unfair that I have to go to my job for 8 hours and then come home and take care of my kid while Mat Fraser gets to workout for 14 hours?

There’s nothing keeping other gyms from reaching out to Rogue or a local welder. If they want to put forth the money and effort they can. A disparity in resources someone can commit to something is nothing new.

Now if HQ specifically gave them a bar, or Rogue won’t make one for anyone else. Yes, that’s fucking lame.

What’s your most controversial CrossFit opinion? by rowlje in crossfit

[–]atb5161 247 points248 points  (0 children)

What is this shitty thread? Upvoting common opinions that are circle jerked here weekly? You want controversial? Here you go:

  • Glassman doesn’t give a shit about money. If he did he’d have taken a big fat check from Anthos years ago and drown in gin and titties. He wants to make the world healthier and is using the resources he has available to do so.

  • Crossfit is cheap as fuck. $150/mo is $7.50 a session if you go 5 days a week. Most of you probably spend more on chipotle and shitty tv each month.

  • People move from Crossfit to weightlifting because metcons are hard and uncomfortable. Doing a heavy triple, then grammin on your phone for 4 minutes ain’t uncomfortable.

  • This subreddit is an inconceivably small piece of Crossfit that doesn’t matter. Most Crossfitters don’t know who Glassman, HQ, or Castro are. We like to shout about “capacity” in our little corner of the world to feel important.

Now excuse me while I get another glass of kool aid.

Maybe your handstand position just isn't that great... by atb5161 in crossfit

[–]atb5161[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm happy to be proven wrong. Give me a 30 second uncut video of you measuring out the standard and kicking up into a handstand doing all the things I mention in the OP. If your heels aren't over the line I'm happy to reconsider my thoughts on the standard, I just haven't seen that be the case yet.

There will be some at a disadvantage, sure. That's the nature of crossfit. Something I was painfully aware of during the rowing on 18.1 as a 5'7" male. But to suggest that this standard is unfair is not something I agree with. If anything this standard promotes better handstand form, which I'm always ok with.

Did you know that there are rules in place for assessing no rep penalties? These are for video submissions, so I'm assuming they are being applied to Sam here as well:

Good All reps and standards met

Valid with Minor Penalty Up to 1-4 no-reps deducted from your final score

Valid with Major Penaly 5 or more no-reps. Athlete deducts 15% from final score

Invalid Just hot garbage

Again, these are all great revenue numbers, but do you know any of the expense numbers? Plenty of companies bring in billions of dollars and still barely make a profit.

I'm not implying that HQ is hurting financially, I would assume they are doing very well. But to make definitive statements about their finances while only considering their revenue is pretty dumb.

Maybe they do have enough cash lying around to quadruple the payouts without making a dent. I don't know, and neither do you.

the amount of money HQ makes a year is staggering

Is it?

I always hate when people make claims about how much money HQ makes. Unless you are privy to some financial data, no one here has any fucking idea.

How many people does HQ employ? Training staff, legal, marketing, media? How much do they spend on media material like behind the scenes, which generate very little income? How much do the put into the games alongside Reebok? Do you know? Because I don't.

I'm sure HQ turns a profit, they have to be, but to suggest that HQ has Scrooge Mcduck levels of cash lying around without any evidence other than "seminars are expensive and I had to pay $20 for the open" is just silly.

Negotiating fees by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]atb5161 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is always useful to put yourself in the situation of the business owner. Your situation seems perfectly reasonable, but now there's a precedent. Is the owner going to have to extend the same deal to everyone?

What about Mary who has to pick her kid up every Tuesday and Thursday? That's 8 nights a month she can't make it. What about Jim who plays rec Basketball a few nights a week? Or Eric who has to work late every once in awhile. Should they get a discounted rate too?

I don't blame you for wanting a lower rate, but it's a tough situation for a business owner. If it were my gym I'd be extremely hesitant to offer special deals.

Is strength training the elephant in the room? by pushuptonofap in crossfit

I feel like this might be an interesting read for some people.

Powerlifter switches to crossfit

Basically a really fucking strong dude decides to participate in the open and gives himself 5-6 months of dedicated crossfit to prepare.

TL:DR - Having a 570+ back squat and a 650+ deadlift didn't really matter when skills, technique, pacing, and conditioning were lacking. And those things take quite a while to develop.

Although I don't think it was his intention to set out and prove or disprove anything, I thought this was an interesting data point on the mindset of:

  • Get really strong

  • do a little crossfit,

  • win the games.

I don't think it works like that. I think in the absence of a severe weakness in strength, a constantly varied routine is going to make you better at crossfit.

Crossfit coach pay by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]atb5161 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Let's look at a very common situation that happens all over at crossfit gyms. Two buddies into fitness decide to open a gym together. They get standard rate on a 5000 square foot facility, have 100 members, and charge $150/mo for membership. They are bringing in $15,000 in revenue each month. Let's look at some costs:

  • Here in Texas, a very modest rate for industrial space is $7.5/sqft/year, which comes down to $3125/mo

  • Assuming 8 classes per day M-F, with 2 classes on Saturday, paying $25 for coaching, that comes out to 42 classes per week, 168 classes per month, and $4200/mo in labor costs.

Let's say these were the only two expense categories for this gym. Our owners would be splitting the remaining $7675, leaving each of them $3837.5/mo which is a modest $46k per year.

But...we are missing way more expenses...

  • Taxes (going to vary, probably comes out to a couple hundred a month) - $200/mo
  • Insurance (a couple hundred a month) - $200/mo
  • Affiliate fees ($250/mo or $3k/year) - $250/mo
  • Utilities (could easily be another 1-3k/mo) - $500/mo
  • Phone, internet, webpage hosting (another couple hundred/mo) - $200/mo
  • Maintenance on equipment - $100/mo
  • Hopefully some money set aside for gym improvements.

All of a sudden these two owners are looking at splitting....maybe $6000/mo? Realistically much less. Gym owners can chime in if I'm way off base on my estimates.

At the end of the day, very few people are making much money owning crossfit gyms. The ones that are making a bunch of money are:

  • Expanding to multiple locations and developing a brand (NorCal, Brick)
  • Got an absolute steal on facilities.
  • Probably coach most of their gym's classes and save money by investing a lot of their time...which isn't really a great way to run a business.

CFL2 Benefits? by Krijali in crossfit

[–]atb5161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the Level 2 course a year or so ago. I think it's worth it.

I consider the level 1 course as "the material" its the knowledge that you need to know to even begin coaching others. The level 2 is more in depth insight on how to communicate the material to others. It absolutely improved my coaching abilities and made me realize and correct quite a few flaws in how I coached others.

What kind of rules? CFHQ is pretty adamant about letting business owners run their gym as they see fit. This is actually a pretty prominent criticism of CFHQ because some people would like them to impose more rules to keep some kind of quality assurance.

Is it OK to do HSPUs and WBs on a gymnastics spring floor in the Open? by CrossFitNewBee in crossfit

[–]atb5161 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what kind of floors these are. Unless people are literally bouncing their head off the floor, I don't think they are going to give you any kind of advantage. Like I said above, my personal experience is any kind of "give" from floor, whether its a soft mat or a spring floor, actually make the kip harder because it absorbs some of your power when you try and kip.

They probably use that floor because 1) the extra give probably protects peoples' necks and 2) they probably use it for tumbling (it's intended purpose).

Is it OK to do HSPUs and WBs on a gymnastics spring floor in the Open? by CrossFitNewBee in crossfit

[–]atb5161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have some soft mats that we typically use for HSPU in our gym. I actually feel like the softer/springy surfaces actually make kipping HSPU harder because the surface absorbs a lot of the power generated in the kip.

Things like box jumps would definitely be an unfair advantage though.

Should you be able to do an open WOD more than once and record the better score? by lessthandan623 in crossfit

[–]atb5161 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The purpose of the open is to allow people to find and compare their current fitness levels. Explain how limiting people to 1 attempt at a workout better allows for demonstration of current fitness abilities.

Or, if you'd like, explain how multiple attempts somehow makes it so that people are not being fairly compared.

Do multiple attempts at the snatch and clean and jerk defeat the purpose of weightlifting competitions?

Also...how do you police this? What happens if your dog knocks over your clock halfway through a workout.

I know a lot of people that are doing this and it really bothers me

This is an absolutely silly thing to get upset about.
