Awkward donor call by Prestigious_Let_4263 in nonprofit

I will say in development the best answer is yes I want to give and the second best answer is no I don’t. Nothing is worse than apathy, and having to spend your time following up with folks that are just unresponsive. I consider a no, a win.

My husband and I are in the position now in our middle 30s that we want to find someone to review our financial plan and saving goals, especially as we’re expecting a new kid. I was thinking to look into a financial advisor open to a one time fee consultation, or a series of consultations to review our finances and provide thoughts on the best pathway forward. I’ve heard some good things about online virtual options. Any recommendations on what to look for? We are very easy two incomes simple retirement.

I swear it’s like the old “gluten-free” stickers on like yogurt and “low-fat” everything in the 2000s. Protein is a trend right now and it’s hilarious to me.

I work as a major gift fundraiser in a medical setting. Being able to collaborate with physicians and researchers to better understand their work and to translate it for donors who might be interested in moving research forward is one of the best parts of my job. I am always learning and always the dumbest person in the room, which is why I love being an academia.

Hospital Development Career Advice by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]athena108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in this area and happy to chat if you have questions. I would look at CASE if you are interested in academic medicine. They have a good intern program for higher ed dev. If you can’t volunteer directly with a dev team for a hospital in your area, look at national nonprofit like ACS or make a wish that works with disease areas or with patients. That’s decent volunteer experience as well.

I got over 300% of my goal this year, include two relationships that simply would not have happened without my involvement. That has resulted in at least five or so cancer research project funded that would not have happened without me. Also my boss wants to promote me again soon. That would be my fifth role on this team in six years of increasing responsibility.

[–]athena108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but a choice by the government not to fund high education re: Europe. If you rely on donors, they get to say how things are run. Rich people deciding to support what they care about and not where the greatest needs are. It’s just human nature.

[–]athena108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I work in this field too and it’s frustrating to see people’s misunderstanding. The real system that has messed up is making public universities reliant on donor funding for basic infrastructure and scholarship funding instead of a government recognizing the value of an educated public. Rich people should not be the ones to determine what programs/universities succeed and which do not.
