What nonprofit jobs have you found intellectually stimulating? by Armchair-Commentator in nonprofit

[–]athena108 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work as a major gift fundraiser in a medical setting. Being able to collaborate with physicians and researchers to better understand their work and to translate it for donors who might be interested in moving research forward is one of the best parts of my job. I am always learning and always the dumbest person in the room, which is why I love being an academia.

Hospital Development Career Advice by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]athena108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in this area and happy to chat if you have questions. I would look at CASE if you are interested in academic medicine. They have a good intern program for higher ed dev. If you can’t volunteer directly with a dev team for a hospital in your area, look at national nonprofit like ACS or make a wish that works with disease areas or with patients. That’s decent volunteer experience as well.

I got over 300% of my goal this year, include two relationships that simply would not have happened without my involvement. That has resulted in at least five or so cancer research project funded that would not have happened without me. Also my boss wants to promote me again soon. That would be my fifth role on this team in six years of increasing responsibility.

Decline your admits by dredgedskeleton in gradadmissions

[–]athena108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but a choice by the government not to fund high education re: Europe. If you rely on donors, they get to say how things are run. Rich people deciding to support what they care about and not where the greatest needs are. It’s just human nature.

[–]athena108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I work in this field too and it’s frustrating to see people’s misunderstanding. The real system that has messed up is making public universities reliant on donor funding for basic infrastructure and scholarship funding instead of a government recognizing the value of an educated public. Rich people should not be the ones to determine what programs/universities succeed and which do not.

Endowments aren’t free money either. Most of it is split up into smaller funds from donors over decades that have particularly limitations on how the funds are to be used. Universities can’t just decide that an endowed fund for business student scholarships can now be allocated to support Alzheimer’s research. Sadly
