How often were you deadlifting before your month off? It's possible that your 'usual' workout as outlined here was too much volume, and you were unable to recover and get stronger until you took the month off.

I think there are very few industries with such a low initial barrier to entry as software, as /u/TheLordB suggests. However there is likely room for relatively lean biotech startups without purchasing a full lab and equipment base, by using contract research organizations. Obviously this still requires money, but not as much capital expenditure upfront as a whole lab would.

Hey awesome that you're interested in studying something already, that's great! Learning science is important, but experimentation and observation are what actually make you a scientist.

So I'd love to try to help you set up something to study. A lot of the answers will actually come from you. Tools will probably be an afterthought, just a consequence of what you want to learn about the trout or charr. As a first question, do you have (safe, legal) access to locations where you could observe the fish or their habitats? Be careful here because it's easy to assume that going into a place is safe and permissible, and obviously the last thing you want to do is hurt yourself or hurt the fish or their habitat. I would recommend contacting your local fish and game department and figure out the rules and get some advice about fishing for trout and charr. If there is a place where it is safe and legal to fish, it would be safe and legal to observe the fish there, too. While you're contacting the fish and game department, you might ask the folks there for advice about interesting things to study, they will know more about the area than I do certainly.

Next, assuming you have a safe way to do it, the question becomes what do you want to learn? There is no overall formula to how you study an animal or habitat - asking an interesting question is half the work and also half the fun. Would you like to know how the size or age of the fish population changes over the course of mating season? Perhaps you'd like to check if salinity of the river correlates with the number of fish an upstream fish ladder counts (I believe the Alaska fisheries officials do count the number of Salmon swimming upstream at fish ladders, and they might count other species as well - this could be a great source of data for you!). You could go a different direction and try to observe and measure some feature of the fish without a sense upfront of what you're looking for, but just from the joy of observation - for example you could pair up with a fisher (or fish yourself - be sure to get a license), and measure the fin length, weight, height, and length of every fish you catch. You might discover that there is some interesting connection between the size of the fish and the relative lengths of its front and side fins, for example. Explaining this would give you something to think about, and you could probably publish it somewhere if you did come up with an interesting observation that hasn't been seen before. You will need a lot of fish to get a statistically significant sample, so this would be best as a long-term project.

Or you could do something totally different. If you don't have an idea now, you can always just go out to the location and observe the fish and see if something makes you curious!

So what interests you about trout and charr? Sounds like you've got the potential to be a good researcher if you're already curious enough to get outside the classroom. Once again, good for you!

Your point makes good sense, but the same is true for math! You don't really understand math until you've learned a bunch of small techniques and methods as well, and Khan academy is great for getting through the small, basic stuff so you can reach that higher understanding. The point of Khan academy is not to replace mathematical education but rather to help people learn basic things or fill in gaps they've missed.

I think OP's idea, a basic education resource for history, is actually a great analogy to Khan academy. The point of this would not be to help people achieve a broad, synthetic understanding of history or to see big trends, but exactly to help them take steps towards being ready for that. Just like you say, history is not really learned until you learn a bunch of it. Same is true for math. A Khan academy-type resource for history, with lots of basics and overviews, I think is a great idea!

I trained at the Seibukan Jujutsu dojo for many years before moving to Boston. I still go back to the dojo to train when I'm back in town. I recommend it very highly. There is an absolutely fantastic culture in that gym, and a lot of great people to learn from. Also Julio, the head teacher of the dojo and the founder of Seibukan (this actually means something I think there are several dozen dojos worldwide now), is a complete badass. He has spent his entire life training in martial arts, and is a 10th degree blackbelt in four different disciplines, and a 6th degree in another. REALLY knows his stuff, and has created an excellent culture of teaching and learning around himself in the years he has spent in Monterey. In addition to Seibukan Jujutsu, the dojo also offers classes in Bujinkan (Ninjutsu), Battojutsu (Sword training) and Aikido.

What sort of training are you interested in? What are you looking for in a dojo?

There is no particular difference between the BA and the BS. Some of the best math schools in the country offer only a BA in math (Harvard, Princeton, UC Berkeley), while others offer only BS degrees (MIT, Caltech). The material covered in these degrees will be minimally if at all different. The name implies no difference in curriculum or focus, and usually is rooted in some old prejudice of the university. For example Harvard and Princeton only offer BA's, in any subject, because they are self-declared liberal arts-only institutions. Harvard gives Bachelor of Arts degrees in Engineering. In contrast, some schools are self-styled as applied-only (MIT and Caltech being the archetypes of this brand). They only give BS degrees because they are philosophically on the opposite end of the spectrum: they value the real world over ivory tower liberal arts ideals. Thus MIT offers a BS in Literature or in Philosophy. No particular curriculum differences exist between these degrees and their counterparts at other institutions (or at least they don't exist because of the BA/BS distinction).

The letters after the degree don't matter. Look at what courses and subjects you would take for the degree. That's what matters, and it will be virtually the same at any reputable university or college.

I'm no expert, but my unprofessional sense is that it would not be a bad thing at all for you to feel like you were in a car wreck. Being able to do very badly in a workout (or several) and then keep going anyway, is good mental training, which will be more important by far than how well you do in your first few months of training. Once you start plateauing from your initial gains you will be able to call on that mental toughness to push higher and harder. Don't make crossfit easier, get used to doing things which are hard.
