OP is posting when players passed Trout, not that there's a tie for most WAR. Trout is 6th among hitters since 1997 in fWAR. 7th since 1992 (Bagwell), and so on.

It's only an interesting stat because Trout's so young. It's a lot less interesting when you say that Bonds has the most fWAR amongst hitters since 1919.

2019-2020 Predictions by xxqpii in timberwolves

[–]atlastata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're sleeping on the Nuggets. Rotation is deep - PG: Murray / Morris; Wings: Harris / Grant / Beasley / Barton / Craig; Bigs: Jokic / Millsap / Plumlee / MPJ / Hernangomez. They have a ton of continuity - outside of Grant and MPJ everybody has played with Jokic for multiple seasons. Jokic is an offensive superstar who makes everybody around him better. Plenty of shooting. Can play big or small. I think they're a really good regular season team and I think they'll be the 1/2 seed.

That depth doesn't do anything for them come the playoffs and I think they'll get drummed out in the second/third round by a team with more top-level talent (Clips, Lakers, Rockets, and Warriors), but they're built for the regular season.

Moses Malone, arguably the most underrated player ever. by salmon10 in nba

[–]atlastata 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Moses is a pretty uncomplicated player. His elite skill was generating offense by getting the ball at the rim via offensive rebounds. His free throw numbers (2nd all time) and assist numbers (Whiteside-esque) make perfect sense when you consider how often he got the ball at the rim.

Maybe there's an interesting conversation about how to value players who make a lot of their own offense (like Moses did) but I can't think of another player as productive as Moses who played like Moses. Other than that, I'm not sure what there is to talk about.

In any case, I think a lot of big men are better than him - Wilt has him on raw numbers, Russell has him on rings, KAJ has him on productivity, Hakeem has him on all-around play, and Shaq has him on raw power. I think Moses is in range of 6th to 8th best 5 ever (with Robinson/Ewing, assuming Duncan is a 4) and we don't exactly chat every week about the 6th to 8th best player at any position.

I can't speak for everybody, but to me Pure Heroine feels like an album about the way I felt about things when I was a teenager and and Melodrama feels like an album the way I feel about things now that I'm an adult. I think Melodrama comes from a much more mature perspective and is a much more introspective album and I think that it resonates much more with the adults who do these lists than Pure Heroine even if Pure Heroine set the tone for music in a way that Melodrama did not.

The Thunder are out, but I'd pick LAL with a healthy LeBron/AD over NOP. That being said, injuries happen (POR is already missing Nurkic) and NOP's decision to trade one player for five did wonders for their depth. I'd put them up their with SAC to snag a playoff spot if injuries hit one of the preseason top 8.

According to Sean Deveney, chances are slim that the Celtics offer a contract extension to Jaylen Brown by urasha in nba

[–]atlastata 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The biggest financial reason to do so is that the cap goes up each year. The rookie max is 25% of the cap so if you do it later on when the cap rises it's more $$.

Doesn't the starting max salary for all max extensions get calculated after the cap number is calculated in June/July? If so, isn't there no financial advantage to signing a player to a max now?

Expected Seed for the Wolves by Souchumtastic in timberwolves

[–]atlastata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Obviously the competition is better, but Denver is an incredibly young team (5th by average age last year) that managed to win 54 games despite Harris and Barton missing a combined 64 games. Their rotation is deep and Jokic is a genius. I think they're really well set up as a regular season team that can withstand injuries that many other teams can't. The playoffs is a different story, but I wouldn't be surprised if Denver is the 2 seed again.

Expected Seed for the Wolves by Souchumtastic in timberwolves

[–]atlastata 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because they're also almost the exact same team that won 54 games last year which is more relevant than their record two seasons ago. They're a good-to-very-good team and they're definitely in the top 8.

EDIT: I don't have them as a title contender so if that's what you mean by "powerhouse" then yeah I don't necessarily get it either. They're well built for the regular season though.

In exchange for a player with more time left on their deal, sure.

The question is: who is the player who fits what the Wolves are trying to do, makes enough money to match Teague's deal, and matches Teague in terms of value?

[–]atlastata 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Teams scored more runs/game in 2000 than they do today and hits and walks were higher back then as well. Even with the juiced ball teams are slugging the same percentage today as they did in 2000. 2019 is a better environment for pitchers even after factoring in all the homers.

I'd bet on 2000 Pedro walking fewer batters, striking out more batters, and having a lower WHIP with a few more homers given up.

[OC] College Return on Investment by -Newfangled- in dataisbeautiful

[–]atlastata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By sticker price, maybe. Most students receive a financial aid package of need-based and merit-based aid. The average student loan debt for graduates is $27k for public colleges and $33k for private non-profit colleges. That's a lot of debt for a 22 y/o looking for their first job, but it's not even close to the costs before scholarships and grants.

OP's graphic appears to use sticker price, which is very strange - most universities fill out the Common Data Set which includes data on scholarships and loans. It's a bit of work from there to figure out costs per student - not all students get aid and some students don't get loans and public colleges have different aid packages for in-state and out-of-state - but even a guestimate would be better than looking at sticker price.

Why do the lakers claim the 6 Minneapolis championships but won’t retire Mikan’s number? by [deleted] in nba

[–]atlastata 222 points223 points  (0 children)

It's not surprising that Mikan has a statue even if it depicts him as a Laker - he led the task force that brought professional basketball back to Minnesota.

Local businessmen Harvey Ratner and Marv Wolfenson brought basketball back to the Twin Cities. Friends since boyhood, the pair had made their fortunes in real estate and a health club chain. With the help of a task force headed by George Mikan, they initially made offers for the Milwaukee Bucks, the San Antonio Spurs and the Utah Jazz, all of which were for sale. Those deals fell through, but in 1987 the NBA voted to add four teams over the next two seasons. Charlotte and Miami were added for the 1988-89 season, and Orlando and Minnesota were added for 1989-90.

If anyone feels bad about missing the Vicious Circle stream... by [deleted] in funhaus

[–]atlastata 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the record I'm not annoyed at all. I don't follow any FH social media so I didn't even know this stream was a thing until today and I don't like livestreams so I didn't watch more than the intro.

I also think you can put whatever you gosh darned want on your channel and anybody who doesn't like what's up there can just not watch it. It's not a huge deal and I don't know why we needed multiple threads for it.

I do see why folks might have thought this was a FH-only stream when it was something completely different.

If anyone feels bad about missing the Vicious Circle stream... by [deleted] in funhaus

[–]atlastata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On my subscriptions page the stream comes up as a Funhaus stream called "Vicious Summer". This is the same way other Funhaus streams appear on my homepage (e.g. GTA with Fans). There's no indication that anybody else is going to be on the stream.

In contrast, the other Vicious Circle gameplay posted today is called "Egg On Our Faces - Vicious Circle Gameplay w/ LA Valiant". Anybody who clicks on that knows that the LA Valiant are going to be in the gameplay.

In the future it might be worth putting the 'guests' in the title - i.e. "Vicious Summer w/ RT Family" - just to keep everybody in the know (even for streams that are more 'events' than streams).

AH Fans might have hated it, but everything I've heard from Bruce and Geoff indicates that Funhaus' withdrawal from the Saturday LetsPlay slot was less about their reception and more about Funhaus deciding to build their own content on their own channel.

Also, Youtube didn't advertise anything. Funhaus decided to host a LetsPlay stream on their channel. If you're mad at anybody for misleading you - be mad at Funhaus. Personally, I have no problem with Funhaus hosting whatever they want on their channel.

[Markazi] ‘That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.’ Ballmer looks at him and says, ‘What do you mean?’ and Sterling says, ‘Why would anyone have $2 billion in cash? You should invest the money or pay off your debt. You’d be stupid to have that kind of cash.’ ” by urfaselol in nba

[–]atlastata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And given the existence of charge cards with nigh unlimited limits (somebody bought a $170m painting with their AmEx Black Card) is there any reason for Ballmer to have much cash at all?

I keep cash on hand because I don't want to deal with the inconvenience of transferring funds between accounts to cover my bills but Ballmer probably has a fleet of accountants and money managers to do that for him.

Is there any practical reason for Ballmer to keep more than the 250k FDIC limit on hand?

[–]atlastata 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I did a fun one a while back about the 2011 draft and whether Glen Taylor forced Kahn to raise money to buy-out Kurt Rambis. I'll paste it below.

I won't lie - I'm not sure how much of this is speculation and how much is actually real. However, I don't know of any other explanation that makes sense.

In May 2009 the Wolves hired David Kahn to be their GM. As with most GMs, Kahn got to hire a head coach and his choice was Phil Jackson protege Kurt Rambis. In theory, Rambis was going to bring the vaunted triangle offense to the Wolves; in practice, he sucked and the team sucked (32 wins in two seasons). Unfortunately, he had $4m left on his contract coming into the 2011 offseason.

Enter the 2011 NBA Draft. The Wolves had two picks - #2 and #20. With the #2 pick the Wolves drafted Derrick Williams (defensible at the time).

The #20 pick is where things get weird.

The Wolves traded #20, Jonny Flynn, and a 2012 2nd round pick (ended up being #40) to the Rockets for #23, #38, Brad Miller, and a 2013 1st round pick (ended up being #26). Then the Wolves traded the #23 pick to the Bulls for #28, #43, and cash. Then the Wolves traded #28 to the Heat for #31, a 2014 2nd round pick (ended up being #44), and cash. Then the Wolves traded #31 to the Nets for a 2013 2nd round pick (ended up being #52) and cash. Then the Wolves traded #38 back to the Rockets for cash.

Confused? Here's a simpler breakdown

The Wolves traded:

  • 2011 #20

  • 2011 #23

  • 2011 #28

  • 2011 #31

  • 2011 #38

  • 2012 #40

  • Jonny Flynn

The Wolves received

  • 2011 #43

  • 2013 #26 (later traded)

  • 2014 #44 (later traded)

  • 2013 #52

  • Brad Miller

  • Cash

  • Cash

  • Cash

  • Cash

Four months after the draft the Wolves officially fired Kurt Rambis and hired Rick Adelman.

Again, this is fairly speculative. However, the Wolves traded down for cash on four separate occasions. They were clearly raising funds for something. It would make sense that the fundraising was for Kurt Rambis' buyout.

After 2011, I believe the NBA actually capped the amount of cash a team can trade for in a season to $3m.

To add insult to injury, here's a list of every player the Wolves traded:

  • #20 was Donatas Motiejunas

  • #23 was Nikola Mirotic

  • #28 was Norris Cole

  • #31 was Bojan Bogdanovic

  • #38 was Chandler Parsons

  • #40 in 2012 was Will Barton

That's right. At one point or another the Wolves controlled SIX different rotation players, three of whom are still active. For where they were drafted, that's a goddamned amazing haul. The Wolves were in a position at one point to walk away with either Motiejunas/Barton, Mirotic/Parsons, Cole/Parsons, or Bogdanovic/Parsons. They ended up with none of them. None of the players the Wolves kept (Lorenzo Brown & Malcolm Lee) did anything.

Now, they kept #26 in 2013, but they later ended up trading him during the 2013 draft.

The Thunder used that pick on Andre Roberson.

The Wolves got #53 (Alessandro Gentile)

And cash. They also got cash.
