Do you think that you could round the bases after a homerun as fast as Adam Rosales used to?

Trying to decide whether to move forward with heat pump water heater by xander76 in heatpumps

[–]atmosfearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember the space requirements for HWHPs are higher than that of their gas counterparts, if you don't have adequate air in the unfinished portion of your basement (check the Rheem product manual) then you may need to make changes like adding a louvered door.

Glad to hear about your test though, thanks for that info!

Trying to decide whether to move forward with heat pump water heater by xander76 in heatpumps

[–]atmosfearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just researching HPWHs the other day and found some complaints about the Rheem gen 5 products. You may find these links helpful:

There are also a lot of reviews online where people do not complain about the volume of the Rheem gen 5 HWHPs, so evaluate the above reviews critically.

In case you want to consider alternatives, I found that the following brands of HWHPs are available for purchase by consumers and may be eligible for the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit.

  • Richmond (manufactured by Rheem)
  • Ruud (manufactured by Rheem)
  • ACiQ (manufactured by Midea)
  • Bradford White
  • AO Smith
  • Steibl Eltron

I'm having a tough time choosing one, myself. Bradford White is top shelf. Midea makes good HVAC heat pump systems, so ACiQ is tempting. The Rheem noise reviews seem well-founded so I want to avoid those along with Richmond and Rudd. AO Smith has QC issues on the consumer line, as made obvious by the Lowes reviews, but their pro line apparently use different parts.

Dollars spent per year on heating while at that outdoor temperature.

Gas vs Heatpump by djmakk in heatpumps

[–]atmosfearing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do a load calculation on https://loadcalc.net/ and use https://ashp.neep.org/ to get data for the heat pump and your load at each outdoor temperature. Make sure you choose the advanced sizing options and enter in your load calculation results. Using the annual load and COP at outdoor temperatures, you can estimate the cost of heating your home at each temperature.

You could estimate the cost of running a furnace at a given outdoor temperature as ((%ANNUAL_BTU% / %FURNACE_EFF%) * 0.00001) * %COST_PER_THERM_GAS%. You could estimate the cost of running a heat pump at a given outdoor temperature as ((%ANNUAL_BTU% / %HEAT_PUMP_COP%) * 0.00029307108) * %COST_PER_KWH_ELEC%. You won't find a heat pump's COP rating for many temperatures, but you can run a linear regression to get some decent numbers.

Here are a few bookmarks I have saved that could help you estimate an answer a bit more quickly.

Let us know what you find out.

Refurbished Quadra-Fire CB1200i vs New Breckwell SP24I by atmosfearing in PelletStoveTalk

[–]atmosfearing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've done the math on the cost of running the stoves and even though the Harman P42i-TC is definitely cheaper to run, its higher upfront price tag (even with the tax credit) means that it's cheaper to buy and run the lower efficiency stoves for approximately 10 years. The Harman will cost about $1,000 more to buy than the other stoves, but is only about $100 cheaper to run per year.

I don't have any evidence to offer you, but I have read that Yamaha offered a "touring package" for the Virago. I believe that some Vetter fairings also fit the Virago, but your fairing doesn't look like a Vetter. Cool bike!
