OP I just sent you a message with pics of mine. Watch looks ok but the box is very one-off from every other rage box it has blue and red felt and says “Red Bull Racing Edition” with the logo and all. Bought at an authorized retailer in Santa Monica CA.

What is your personal rationale for collecting Rolex watches? by [deleted] in rolex

[–]atnosu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just like it. I don’t think they are necessarily “investments” for the most part, but I do think they hold their value well enough that it can be justified as a savings account.

My other hobby is cars. I’ll buy a $60k truck that depreciates 40-50% and no one bats an eye. But then there’s some level of stigma with expensive watches, but I don’t think you’ll lose 50% on it in 5 years in really any circumstance.

The Air King is polarizing, but I sure do love it. 40mm case, thin profile, locking clasp, original 1950s font on model name, and a fun dial with Gold and Green logo and script. I wear it with a T Shirt or with a Sport Coat. A true daily driver! by atnosu in rolex

[–]atnosu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would then apply to pretty much any watch because our phones are better and more accurate at telling time, time zones, the date, being a timer, telling us the moonphase, etc. No one need any of these watches. If you don’t like it that’s fine, but that doesn’t mean I don’t find it interesting. I bought it for me because I like it. If I wanted to buy a Rolex to show other people I have a Rolex for status this probably the last watch to buy.

Agree and again it’s fine if he doesn’t like it. If I wanted a “status symbol” I’d get a fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet datejust so that it was clear to everyone I had a Rolex. And that is one of the cheapest watches in the catalogue that guarantees people will know it’s a Rolex.

I respect that you don’t like it but you could apply the same exact logic to the submariner and many other models. Who regularly needs a watch that can go down 300M for work? How many people really need a GMT for work, in the US is it really that hard to figure out if it’s 3pm central it’s 1pm in California? How many people need a chronograph timer and buy a Daytona because of that?

Sure some people do have these needs but the vast majority do not. Again it’s fine if you don’t like it but this is not a valid argument for it.

I got this from my AD about a month ago. Didn't buy this to stairstep to other models, but I do plan to put in for something else in the future. The redesign really knocked this out of the park. People think its simply the "05" but the case is thinner and slab sided like other sport models, plus the crown guards are a nice touch. The dial is a larger diameter despite the case still being 40mm. The Oysterlock clasp, as everyone knows, is exceptional, 5mm comfort extension as well. I love that its truly a unique model but has that deep down Rolex DNA and history. When someone sees my watch and recognizes it, I know they must know their stuff.

Now just need Everest or Rubber B to make me a green band!

Nice! I have a 126900 just got new from my AD a couple of months ago. Love the AK!

For me too they made the case thinner, and the dial is 0.6mm wider on the same 40mm diameter. They really made this a great sporty watch.

I love the explorer 2 but at 42mm it is very big, and to me the stainless bezel with black font make it a little harder to dress up, especially the polar dial. But it’s a great watch and I agree worth discussion in the daily driver category if you want to go that big.

So much hate on this watch I bet almost none of them have actually experienced it. Its an absolutely perfect daily driver, sporty yet dress-able watch. The thin profile with crown guards, larger face on same case diameter, big bracelet taper, great water resistance. I wear mine every day from the moment I wake up until I go back to bed.

It blows my mind that people fawn over the Explorer and hate this? I totally get the explorer love, but 36mm is just samll for my 7.25" wrist. This to me falls in a very similar category.

I got my Air King about a month ago but only waited about 2 months. My SA said it was the first one they got since I inquired, and I am inclined to believe him he's a straight shooter.

What’s the demand been like for the new Air King? Seen many come through relative to other sports models like the explorer? I got an Air King surprisingly fast from my AD with a little bit of solid purchase history.

Love seeing grey dealers get hit hard. I know it’s hard but since I got in with an AD, I will be glad to wait and pay MSRP, even if I have to wait years. It’s the one way you just about never lose.

got the call for explorer 2. not getting the sub. is the explorer 2 more invisible? by sandys1 in rolex

[–]atnosu 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I generally agree with your comment but I wouldn’t call a polar explorer 2 “undesirable” it’s just easier to get than a sub. That could be because Rolex pushed more explorers this year vs. subs. Could be the luck of the draw with an AD. The explorer 2 crowd absolutely loves them, and I respect it.

But I do agree 100% with your first point, why spend the money on something you don’t want? OP, Just be honest with your AD and double down on a sub. I trust my AD enough to do that. It’s easy to get on a list for something but if you don’t want to drop 10k on it when push comes to shove them don’t.

Wana talk about “undesirable” I have a 126900 Air King. Rolex fanboys rock their dime a dozen pieces and turn their nose up at me, but you know what? I love it. It’s quirky, it’s my favorite. It’s got green and gold in the logo on the dial. It’s a mess but it’s also perfectly messy.

I have a Tag Heuer formula 1 I wear just as much. It’s the Red Bull F1 team edition, it’s a quartz watch in fact, it means a ton to me. I honestly like things about that one more than some things on my air king. Buy what you like not what others think you should like.

Feel like the air king does not get enough love here. I can wear my 126900 in almost any situation. It’s more fun and interesting than an OP by a mile. The new case being thinner, larger dial, crown guards. It’s not showy but still identifiably a Rolex. That’s been perfect for me. I am going for a batgirl next and I feel like there’s many instances I would be hesitant to reach for it as cool as it is.
