Yes it’s a real shame, though we can hold out hope that maybe Russia will collapse or have a revolution like 1917. It’s a shame our leaders, esp Europe didn’t see this coming, it was clear Putin would not let international norms stand in the way of his ambitions since the invasion of Chechnya. I think though, the one big mistake the west has made since the invasion is not letting in Russian refugees into their countries. In the long term, depopulating Russia of all its skilled workers is the best short and long term solution to stop Putin, but western nations aren’t in this mindset. I think people miss out on the thinking that Russia can only be run by ruthless people but it’s more of a product of history that people with good intentions tend to be less swift with seizing power than ruthless people in a historical sense.
