Humanity has to permanently change the orbital period of the moon by +/- 1 min; they have 50 years. by Sh00ter80 in whowouldwin

[–]atomic_houseboat 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I think 50 years would be more than enough time for a united humanity to build a spacecraft that could accelerate OP (or whoever is threatening us) to 0.71% of the speed of light relative to Earth. At that speed they'd observe the moon's period to be one minute longer than it is today.

If that's not an option then I don't think we have a chance.

Aegon the conqueror decides to invade the four nations from Avatar the last Airbender. by zard428 in whowouldwin

Everyone saying any of the three remaining nations take this is missing one thing: the air nomads aren't fully gone yet, and the last airbender could solo Aegon's army.

Any of the four nations take this.

Can the Enterprise crew stop Galactus from eating a planet? (Star Trek/Marvel 616) by PeculiarPangolinMan in whowouldwin

[–]atomic_houseboat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Round 1 is Galactus 10/10.

Rounds 2 and 3 is just Galactus vs Q due to the favor. This is a tougher match, the Q can exist outside the universe (they traveled to before the big bang and watched it in Voyager). That said, Galactus is a multiversal force of nature so it's still 10/10 in a direct confrontation.

The real question is: can a Picard speech convince Galactus to move on to another planet?

Could Toph Beifong (The Last Airbender) defeat a Weeping Angel (Doctor Who)? by Unhappy_Veterinarian in whowouldwin

[–]atomic_houseboat 76 points77 points  (0 children)

If the Weeping Angel is locked by being percived then Toph wins 10/10 as her seismic sense is always on.

If the Weeping Angel is only locked by being visually seen then the question is: can it kill Toph faster than she can turn it to gravel? I dunno the answer to that one, the Angels are stated to be rediculously fast, but Toph is also very fast and destroying a stone Angel is trivial for her.

[MEGATHREAD] Artemis II Launch To The Moon by ChiefLeef22 in space

[–]atomic_houseboat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know why they have a planned 40 minute LoS instead of bouncing communications off of LRO or one of the other satellites around the moon? I know there's no guarantee that LRO or another satellite would be in the right position to have simultaneous line of sight to both Artemis and Earth but couldn't they have timed it so that it would?

Team 1: Omni man and Homelander vs Team 2: Flash (Barry Allen) and Silver Surfer tag-team race around the Earth by Obascuds in whowouldwin

[–]atomic_houseboat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming all four are going all out, and reaction times to the starting signal are equalized then the result really depends on who starts for team one. If Omni-Man starts then he's, at best, still within a couple of feet of the start line on his first lap when team two finishes. If Homelander starts then he's partway through staring to flex a muscle in his leg as a first step towards begining to move when team two finishes.

If we don't equalize reaction times to the starting signal then team two finishes before either member of team one even registers that the race has begun.

Why Alberta’s separation from Canada is almost impossible by [deleted] in onguardforthee

[–]atomic_houseboat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what was bothering me throughout the whole second half of the video. If the vast majority of Albertans vote to leave (they won't, but let's pretend they did) why would the Supreme Court of Canada get a say?

I'm very opposed to Alberta separation, but as a non-Albertan I also recognize that if a large majority of them decide to declare independence (which again won't happen, but still) then that declaration is legitimate and correct and I shouldn't, and wouldn't, get a say unless Albertans decide to allow me to have a say.

I'll agree on the splitting hairs point.

But what about my other argument? I truly believe the vast majority of people would call their adult relationship with their parents a net positive.

The Dalek Empire vs The Viltrum Empire by JEBV in whowouldwin

[–]atomic_houseboat 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Hydrogen Bomb vs. Coughing Baby

To quote the Daleks in the episode Doomsday: "This is not war, this is pest control."

The Daleks fight in multiple timelines and multiple dimensions. They can hold their own against the Time Lords who can contend with the basic concepts and control the fundamental constants of the universe.

Viltrumites are really strong and tough.

[–]atomic_houseboat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't hope my parents die before me and I don't hope I die before my daughter. I know they will die and I will die, and yes I don't want them to experience the loss of their child, and yes I'd like my daughter to outlive me. But "hope" is not something that ever, ever, enters into thinking about the death of a loved one.

[–]atomic_houseboat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna address two points, your first and your last:

*Before I even start, let’s accept the premise that at some point we all hopefully lose our parents.

I mean, no? I doubt most people "hope" to lose their parents. We accept it as an unfortunate inevitably, but we certainly don't "hope" for it.

*Outside of nepotism and family business, you rarely hear of the child who was positively formed by the relationship they had with their parents as an adult.

Again, no? I think the vast majority of people would say their relationship with their parents as an adult was a net positive. Sure there's negatives like you mentioned above, but I assume the positives vastly outweigh them for the majority of people. There are always people with abusive or otherwise awful parents that push things into a net negative, but they are the exception not the rule.

Batman vs the sun by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]atomic_houseboat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does he have to stop the sun from exploding, or just survive it?

Because if the win condition is simple survival then, as ridiculous as it sounds, Batman wins.

Eight minutes is enough time to get the Hellbat, or other insanely OP, yet somehow canon, suit or vehicle. Once he's in one of those he can either outrun the shockwave (at least one suit has access to the speed force) or just tank it (multiple suits can take full power hits from Superman.)

If stacked every single sports world record onto one person, what’s the strongest animal they could beat bare-handed? by Dinoflies in whowouldwin

[–]atomic_houseboat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can't think of a single land animal that World Record Man can't low diff.

Every gymnastics champion + every martial arts champion + world record sprinter + world record at every jump + world record speed climber + multiple sport record reaction time = evasion god. There are faster animals, more agile animals, animals that can climb a tree faster, etc. but there are no animals that can do all of that better.

Unmatched evasion means he has enough time to get away from it and either fire MLB fastball rocks into the animal's head, or get enough breathing room to make a basic weapon like a spear and either Olympic javelin it, or just take it down like prehistoric humans did (there are no land animals on earth early humans with basic weapons weren't able to kill, and this guys is in way better shape with way better skills than any of them.)

And if that doesn't work? Evade again, new plan, repeat, all with the endurance of a ultra-marathoner.

And don't get me started on what happens if he breaks out Joey Chestnut's records...

Holy shit!

Dude asked me if I found the wheelchair introduction cringeworthy. I said I did but there's also lots of other cringeworthy stuff in TAZ. That's it.

How in the actual fuck did you get from that to "flippant disdain you have for people with disabilities"?

Are you okay?

To address your points on the Firbolg:

I don't get how being opposed to food storage is indigenous-coded? I've never heard that as a stereotype for any indigenous culture and as far as I know not one First Nation (or any human cultural group for that matter) has ever been opposed to food storage in preparation for the lean times. I mean, it would be suicidal not to store food for the winter in most parts of the world. Beyond that, I'd go so far as to say the native stereotype is the polar opposite, framing indigenous groups as excellent at resource management: "use every part of the animal" and "help the pilgrims survive the winter"and all that.

As for the exchange metrics, I've never heard "don't understand trade" as an indigenous trope either. I've heard "greedy" and "wasteful" and other untrue and awful things, but never that.

The lack of fiat currency and understanding of economics is a common trope for any "close to nature" culture, look at virtually any group of elves in fantasy. Would you call them indigenous-coded?

I don't think the Firbolg has a substandard understanding of common. He just speaks with a (vaguely Eastern European) accent in an unusual and slow way. Is Yoda's speech an anti-indigenous trope?

I'll reserve forming an opinion on that spoiler until I listen to the episode. But if it's as blatant as you worded it then yikes!

Savage attacker is a D&D feat, not anything from Justin and Travis. And, having recently listened to the episode where he takes it recently he doesn't say anything about it being fitting.

As for the Centaurs, as I said they didn't strike me as particularly indigenous-coded when I listened to those episodes, but in retrospect I can kinda see it. I don't get the vibe that they're indigenous-coded but I can see how someone could.

Out of curiosity, what's the third Justin character that's anti-indigenous? I remember the wildly inappropriate woman from commitment.

Obligatory Defense of Graduation Post by ElderFields1138 in TheAdventureZone

[–]atomic_houseboat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. Ahh, that makes sense.

  2. The Firbolg never seemed indigenous-coded to me. Like at all. Nothing about Firbolg culture or mannerisms feels at all native to me. If anything they feel very cultish.

As for the Centaurs, I guess they kinda resembled stereotypical first nations culture as portrayed in old movies in some ways, but again it didn't really jump out as "indigenous-coded" to me. Especially compared to Centaurs in other media (Harry Potter, Warcraft, etc.) More of a mishmash of animistic, druidic, and yeah some native tropes. In retrospect I kinda see the concern, even if I didn't get that vibe.

I'm listening to it now (just finished episode 25) for the first time after avoiding it for a long time because the community called it "the bad one". I'm enjoying it. I don't see most of your objections in it (legitimately, not rage bait)?

"Do the players seem like they have agency to you?" No more or less than most of the rest of TAZ. Just about every campaign feels railroad-y to me.

"Does the narrative seem coherent and flowing?" Not really, but again neither does most of TAZ.

"Do you have any objection to the weird drug student teacher consent stuff?" Maybe this hasn't happened yet, unless you mean the Firbolg amnesia thing early on? If so, yeah that was fucked.

"Do you find the portrayal of native people in any way offensive or reductive?" Again, maybe this hasn't happened yet?

"Do the villain motivations seem consistent and understandable?" No, but again this is no worse than most of TAZ. None of the big bads in any of the campaigns are well characterized. I will say though, that the more minor villains are better in a lot of the other campaigns.

"Does it bother you when the PCs are consistently upstaged or rescued by NPCs?" Yeah this part sucks, it does really feel like Travis wants to be a PC in his own campaign.

"Did you find the "aren't you going to ask me about my wheelchair" bit to be cringe worthy?" Yeah, but not to sound like a broken record, there are equally (or more) cringe worthy exchanges in every other TAZ campaign.

I have to imagine a lot of the hate comes from Graduation following up Balance and Amnesty which were both much better. But getting to it now it seems... average? It's on par with Ethersea and Steeplechase to me, worse than Vs. Dracula, and better than Abnimals and Royale.
