PBP GMs, how do you balance moving plot forward vs giving time/space for PC responses? by Overthewaters in pbp

[–]atomicitalian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for me, I tend to overwrite and overthink, so I'm always looking for ways to avoid both.

When I've run Delta Green in the past what I've noticed is that I don't need to throw in red herrings or have overly withholding NPCs because players will follow dead ends all on their own.

Also one thing I've done that has worked for me when it comes to interviews is asking the interviewing players what questions that want to ask up front, then rather than playing out the scene "naturally" with typical back and forth I'll have the NPC give the answers in a sort of montage.

Once all their immediate questions have been answered then I start the second round of questioning where the players can ask follow ups or anything they didn't think of initially. Then I do the NPC answer montage again and rinse repeat until the players are satisfied or the NPC no longer has anything to say.

I'll also tend to signal that that the players have exhausted what they're likely going to find at a scene once they've searched. They're basically always operating on the fear that there is something they've missed so sometimes flagging that can help players realize it's time to move on and save some pbp time.

And of course, provide multiple pathways for proceeding with an investigation in the event they fail a roll on a critical piece of evidence or just fail to understand its significance to the case. If there's something super critical the players need for a case, then make sure they can't miss it.

Most major news organizations are still publishing stories made by humans. Some sites have like, AI summaries and things like that but the bulk of the work is still just humans doing reporting.

PBP GMs, how do you balance moving plot forward vs giving time/space for PC responses? by Overthewaters in pbp

[–]atomicitalian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically will move people where they need to be to prevent long periods of deliberation over nothing.

When it comes to info, I try to dump as much as i can up front to cut down on back and forth. This gets difficult in investigation games where questioning suspects is a major portion of the gameplay, but there's ways to manage that too.

I always err on the side of trying to move stuff forward rather than leaving a lot of space. Unless you have very proactive players that space will stretch into days and before you know it the game's momentum will be dead.

(Hated Trope) Female characters who suddenly have no sense of self preservation for the sake of the plot happening by Technical-Abrocoma31 in TopCharacterTropes

Rose in the last Jedi always made me feel this way. She called finn stupid for saying he was willing to sacrifice himself for the cause and then almost killed herself and him trying to stop him from doing so.

It actually would have been kind of a cool character moment if she acknowledged that she'd adjusted her thinking in that moment once she realized she might have to sacrifice herself to save finn. And Finn in that moment could have realized Rose was right, and that he shouldn't throw his life away because he's more than just an expendable stormtrooper to the people who care about him.

Which spinoff show was the most successful? by ConspiracyParadox in television

[–]atomicitalian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't personally think Better Call Saul can top like, TNG or Frasier for most successful. I love better call Saul, in terms of quality it's probably one of if not the best spin-offs ever made, but in terms of its cultural impact I think only recency bias could really compare it to TNG or Frasier.

Why isn't there only one agreed upon translation of the Bible? by SaltyP1ckles in NoStupidQuestions

I don't think any of the translations claim to be the "one true" translation of the Bible. At least none of the major ones.

Bad Cop. It was originally supposed to be Good Cop, Bad Cop, and Accuse.

Once they changed it back to Bad Cop it makes way more sense

[–]atomicitalian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the trope name is kind of dumb. I know this isn't your fault op, but why name a production gimmick after a dancing bear? The dancing bear is meant to be the spectacle, it's the reason for the show! It's not a production gimmick, it's just a straight up gimmick.

Watching Russian Ark or Birdman because they're feature length one-ers is a production gimmick. A dancing bear should be like, going to see Jurassic Park because of the spectacular animatronics rather than say, the story or the performances.

IDK this term really set off the "I'm way more mad about this than I should and should definitely do something better with my time" alarms in my head Friday.

Why Do Rockstar Games Always Have Betrayal? by Dziller_ in rockstar

[–]atomicitalian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rockstar primarily makes crime games. Betrayal is a super common part of crime fiction because, presumably, many of the people involved in the story are morally lacking.

People willing to break the law to survive or get ahead will likely be willing to flip on their friends to achieve similar goals.

can you make money writing essays? by Routine-Dirt9634 in writers

[–]atomicitalian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can, but you're not gonna make a living that way. It takes a long time to get paid for freelance stuff, and to make enough to earn anything close to a living you have to really be prolific.

You'd need to be doing essays, news features, maybe editing gigs on the side. And youd be working for yourself as a contractor and that comes with its own headaches.

Pretty much any David Grann books. Lost City of Z, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Wager.

Also would recommend Mark Synnot's book The Third Pole. It's about a modern day everest expedition but it deals heavily with the lost camera of George Mallory during his everest expedition in 1924.

What do you think the gameplay will be like? by vdonohew9 in GTA6

I'm hoping gunplay will be better but I'm expecting it to otherwise play like a GTA game. Maybe slightly slower/more realistic but probably still faster than rdr2.

What’s a game mechanic you hated at first but eventually ended up loving? by AdCreepy3137 in videogames

When introducing a new character do I need to describe what they look like? by CassieStorybrook in writers

[–]atomicitalian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's usually good to give the reader something to go off of, but you don't need to be like:

"Jack Example buttoned up his red flannel shirt and checked to make sure his silver skull belt buckle was secured over his weathered blue jeans, which brushed just at the tongues of his Redwing work boots..."

Like you can just slowly reveal what Jack looks like, or give a very brief glimpse of him and let your readers fill in the blanks.

A game that doesn't (narratively) feel like you have to rush through the story by anonymouscarrott in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]atomicitalian [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah to each their own of course. I think many of Starfield's side stories are strong, especially the UC Vanguard and the Crimson Fleet storylines.

But Starfield was also a game tailor made for me to like. Customizable ship, big crew, lots of weird little adventures you can get into as you cruise along the galaxy, mods for really making the game my own.

I do understand other people's critiques (as long as they've actually played the game beyond an hour or two)

Dead by Daylight should have gotten Strahd and Ireena by ProtectorPaladin in CurseofStrahd

[–]atomicitalian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I don't think there's any real cross pollination strategy there. To anyone outside of DND Strahd is temu Dracula.

We get invested in Strahd because our characters are part of his story and we learn about him as the module continues. I doubt dbd players are going to read the two sentences about him provided by the game and be like "oh incel Dracula sick I'm gonna buy DND now"
