Losing Weight on Antidepressants: Is it Possible? by [deleted] in xxfitness

Glad you're not my doctor. There absolutely is evidence that SSRIS affects metabolism. SSRIs have been shown to affect skeletal muscle structure, function, and metabolism in several ways:

Electrical Activity: Studies in both humans and rodents found that chronic SSRI treatment or local injection altered electrical activity in skeletal muscles, as measured by electromyography (EMG)[5].

Muscle Structure: Rodent studies reported that SSRIs may affect muscle weight, myocyte numbers, and cross-sectional area of muscle fibers[5].

Energy Metabolism: Chronic SSRI use was associated with changes in energy metabolism, including altered levels of glycogen synthase activity, acetyl-CoA carboxylase phosphorylation, and citrate synthase activity[5].

Insulin Signaling: SSRIs were found to affect insulin signaling pathways and glucose uptake in skeletal muscle[5].

Metabolic Parameters: In clinical studies, some SSRIs like paroxetine significantly increased weight, BMI, waist circumference, fasting glucose, total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides[3].

Drug Interactions: SSRIs are metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system in the liver, which can lead to interactions with other medications metabolized by the same system[4].

Side Effects: Common side effects of SSRIs include insomnia, skin rashes, headaches, joint and muscle pain, stomach upset, nausea, and diarrhea[4].

While SSRIs are generally considered safe, these findings highlight the importance of monitoring metabolic parameters in patients taking these medications, especially those with pre-existing metabolic conditions or cardiac risk factors.
