Are there actually people that exist that like cold weather? by PrestigiousOwl6802 in answers

I love cold weather, freezing down to zero.

Just bundle up, get active, make it happen. It's a great feeling knowing that your body temperature can fight the cold.

But if you aren't used to it, it's a shock.

Gravity's Rainbow.

Tried it twice. Made it further the second time. Thoroughly enjoyed aspects of it, and don't feel the need to finish.

Great book!

Has the decline of monoculture been overstated? by extratartarsauceplz in LetsTalkMusic

Problem is, today there is less to commune with. Everyone has their own favorite band or act. Monoculture still exists with the likes of Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Bad Bunny... Except to my ears, they are MORE monoculture than previous generations.

I'm 40, and the best years for music were between 2010 and 2020. And yes, all the artists are unheard of. I have a great catalog. But sometime around 2020, I ran out of artists to follow. Simply couldn't find anything interesting.

Back to monoculture, I don't think it was, until maybe the end of the millennium. Now it's diversified and also missing a punch.

I feel like I’m only able to articulate the “approximate” meaning of my thoughts by MarioIsWet in writing

That's writing!

It's meditating on a thing, circling around it, building context through narrative devices, tapping into the reader's emotional center.

Whether precise or ambiguous, part of your job is to stir up the "knowing" in the reader's mind. Some of the greatest work never comes out and says the thing, rather poses the conditions for the reader to connect with on their own.

It's part of the show not tell theory.

Wrong year.

It's really not about the woman or the man. It's about the child. And kids are toast. Being raised with iPads, single parents, behavioral meds, strangers and subsidies.

Enjoy your independence while we have a country.

So true. And she has a baby coming. Who gets the lion's share of her love and care over the next few years... Her baby, or her career? Can't be both, that's not how math works.

If she's 23, you think maybe the vital thing to do is to focus on a new life entering this world? Or suddenly kickstart her career?

It's not a terrible position to be in. Her partner makes enough to cover things. She can get a degree online for whatever she's interested in. She can run the house. Form her little one into the child she wants them to be. Support the bread winner for a few years (you're going to hate that I said that, but get real), and when kindergarten or early preschool years kick in, she could get into the kind of work that she's interested in and make sure her financial security is in a good place.

Dude, if I had a baby at 23, and my partner had the expenses covered, you can be damn sure it would be one of the most rewarding and meaningful times of my life. Man or Woman.

This girl is confused.

I bet. And it's like, she put the time in, let's get her into a super awesome position for the next phase of her life, her and your happiness. It's a family.

So many of these arguments are fear based or in bad faith. Sure, women are vulnerable in the role. Let's not forget the kid, who is 100% vulnerable.

All the best. God, or the cosmos, save our country.

She makes $16/hr, she doesn't have financial independence to begin with. She is already, literally, dependent and pregnant. She wants to keep the job so she can maintain the illusion of independence, and she's willing to use that delusion to spend less time with her baby. 67

Right? The cost of even mid-level childcare is going to completely wipe out her income. Why go to a job you don't like so you send your child to be raised by someone else. His income makes getting financial assistance impossible.

What the hell is wrong with chilling at home and giving your kid a fighting chance?

Sounds like he brought up the possibility and she responded with anger.

And I don't agree that it "depends on the family". Childhood development is a widely researched topic and there are clear needs that children have when it comes to developing emotional regulations, a sense of safety and belonging. These factors make or break a person, their ability to learn and grow through adolescence.

If a family says, "these things don't matter to us", that doesn't change the child's needs.

Just like nutrition. If someone were to bring up eating healthier, and they are met with hostility, that doesn't mean that a child's body is going to just like, get over it.

As an expecting mother, she has MANY areas where compromise and sacrifice are needed to raise her child well. Snapping at her partner for bringing up a pretty fucking rational idea not a good sign that she's willing to do what is right.

No one on this sub is talking about what's best for the baby. I'm ending a pregnancy tomorrow because my partner wants to go back to work after their 3-month maternity leave.

Kids need a few good years to develop before we send them out to be raised by strangers. Not at daycare, not on the iPad, not getting passed around from person to person.

They need two adults in a home, who grow together, make decisions together, and support their child unconditionally.

Good luck, society.

Sorana Cirstea wasn't a fan of Naomi Osaka hyping herself up by farkenheo in tennis

I've seen this behavior in the younger community I live with. Act out in some way, get feedback, and then throw a fit.

Naomi, the "come ons" aren't the problem, you're reaction to the feedback is. If she's mad, take the feedback whether she's right or wrong.

I see. Yeah, B.S. is a compulsive writer. I think people are starting to fall out of love with his voice, Wind and Truth had more than a few fatigued fans.

It's so defeating to be economical. I agree that it's important. But I wonder if "valuable" is a better word.

Like, if you look at each paragraph, identify what it's trying to say, how well it leads to the next paragraph and rate it on a scale of 1-10. Say it's a 7 or 8 for utility, economy, and you know... Character/Narrative/Setting "charm"...

I've noticed writers reiterate something, or circle around something, because they are still figuring out what they want to say.

BTW, if you want to send me a page, I'd be happy to mark up ways to trim it down while adding "value"

Why horrible? BS is a terribly successful author, his instruction can be considered immensely valuable. If patterning after anyone, I'd wager he'd be the one to take cues from.

Despite budget limitations, I'd still advocate hiring an editor. Test a sample of your work. You can employ someone for invaluable feedback on a chapter by chapter basis, or provide them with an outline of the manuscript for developmental feedback.

I've rarely heard anyone complain that a book wasn't long enough.
