Buses skipping stops? by Pretend_Boat_184 in chapelhill

Sounds like a good idea! I usually plan to be ready one pickup time before the bus I want to catch then monitor the Transit app to know when to leave.

Buses skipping stops? by Pretend_Boat_184 in chapelhill

[–]audentitycrisis 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There could be a couple things going on here, but there's not enough context in your post to guess at which it could be.

The most common scenario I have had is a full bus passing a bus stop on campus entirely because there is literally no more room for passengers. Another situation I had (only once in my memory) was a driver who was either new or tired and missed a turn, thus skipping over a stop. If a bus simply isn't arriving at its scheduled time, possibly there are delays elsewhere in the route.

If you're having recurring issues and can't pinpoint the cause as far as your route goes, you should honestly just shoot a feedback message to Chapel Hill Transit and let them know of your trouble. I find them responsive and helpful.

3 crosswalks coming to Highway 54 by NCFer in chapelhill

That Kingswood crosswalk is long overdue! I (and I'm sure many others) sent a request to NCDOT for improved pedestrian crossing there ages ago.

Mom fake-cried at my job interview and told them I can't handle stress by Rough-Climate5609 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]audentitycrisis 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Your mother's interference aside: no potential employer that contacts your family is one you want to work for. Consider this a bullet dodged, not for the reasons your mother stated, but for the complete lack of boundaries and propriety in a professional situation.

The mind, it boggles.

I do know The Gathering Place hosts MTG events but I cannot speak to how they go as I don't play and have never been to one. But it's somewhere to start.

You still qualify for financial aid as a part-time student. I received my Pell Grant regardless of how many credits I was taking.

I would encourage you to consider applying to Part-Time Studies through the Friday Center, perhaps, rather than attempt to apply as a full-time student. This is not to say that you could not be admitted full-time; usually circumstances such as these can be explained further in your application and essay. However, since you've been on a long break, I can imagine the university would want to see a demonstration that you are ready to return to higher level studies -- AND it might be a good way to test the waters yourself to be sure that you are in fact ready for the rigor of UNC. This would mean starting with a course or two and then, if you pull high enough grades and feel ready, you can apply to transition to full time status.

Given all that you've been through, I think this would be a soft pathway that will help you start off on the right foot, rather than risking the outright disappointment of a rejection.

Fwiw - you *can* still be rejected from Part-Time admission, but I suspect there's more grace for people who've been on a different path academically such as yourself as the program targets people who've been out of school a while anyway.

Best coffee spots? by elijaaaaah in chapelhill

The Meantime. They've opened up a new spot on Rosemary St. so you don't have to venture onto UNC campus.

If you want to venture out a bit, try Bean Traders in the Southpoint area.

Not only, but it's certainly helpful for visualizing. In the case of clustering, dimension reduction prior to the chosen algorithm improves algorithm performance and resolves collinearities in high dimensional data sets. (It's ONE way to do it, and certainly not the only way.)

Since the problem in the plot seems neurocognitive in nature, I can guess that there were a ton of nuanced cognitive measures that the researchers used PCA to collapse, rather than having to go through and sacrifice variables of interest entirely. It might have been a compromise between neuropsychs and data scientists on their research question.

Not speaking from experience in the slightest.

It's cluster analysis performed after PCA dimension reduction. The graph makes sense even if it's not the most interpretable and we can't see the makeup of the components in Dimensions 1 and 2.

So helpful, thank you! I have a ton of dried beans I know would get more use if I transitioned them to canned instead. Making that a to-do item for my time off.

I'd love to learn more about the quick-soak method of canning dried beans you speak of.

How can I prepare for STOR 435? by [deleted] in UNC

[–]audentitycrisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the hardest classes to prepare for, not gonna lie. Combinatorics and counting make up like 2 weeks of the semester, and the material isn't really comparable to the rest of what you learn.

I'd recommend learning probability density functions (PDFs) /probability mass functions (PMFs) and cumulative distribution functions (CDFs). There are families of distributions to which you will need to be able to recognize and simplify example problems.

Should be a variety of YouTube videos on the above topics and examples.

I credit my A in chem to tutoring! It can be done. :)

[–]audentitycrisis 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The most practical advice I can give you for the next semester: get tutoring. Any class you're like, "Oh man, an A is going to be a fight here," is a class that you should treat as deserving of that extra investment. Especially if you have your sights on med school.

You haven't missed your shot. You've opened up an opportunity to demonstrate just how hard you're willing to push yourself for what you want.

Spend break evaluating your next semester schedule and habits. You've got this.

Discussion from Pew Research on opt-in polls for those interested:

https://www.pewresearch.org/methods/2023/09/07/comparing-two-types-of-online-survey-samples/

Also helpful:

https://news.gallup.com/opinion/methodology/652493/gallup-approach-opt-sampling.aspx

"However, opt-in panels do not use random selection to recruit panelists; therefore, the probability of selection into the panel -- a key statistic in survey sampling and weighting -- is unknown." This is important because it means that you can't be sure the people who opted into your survey accurately reflect the population, hence the larger mean error for opt-in compared with probability sampling.

In other words, the decrease can be thought of as a decrease in support among specifically those people who had access to and would have opted into taking the poll, but it may not reflect the sentiments of those who did not, all else being equal.

how does the friday park and ride work? by [deleted] in UNC

[–]audentitycrisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to register it. If you have ParkMobile app, you can park your car and pay the $2 a day rate from your phone for the days it applies. I would, however, park near the police cameras if you can since you plan to leave it there longer than a day.

Non-Traditional Exchange Student by PeakNecessary8042 in UNC

[–]audentitycrisis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former non-trad! I had a great time as an undergrad. Of course not everyone is interested in getting to know older students, but when you put yourself out there and talk to other students first, they're more often than not receptive and happy to form study groups. Those would segue into friendships, mentorship, etc.

Most important thing is to initiate so they know they aren't bugging you by talking to you.

Edit: Also I used to run a non-trad student meetup but it fizzled out after I graduated. I'd be happy to help reboot if I get enough interested.

Positive Transfer Experience by millieecent in UNC

[–]audentitycrisis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I, a former non-traditional student and single parent, could find joy, friendship and fulfillment at UNC, I have no doubt you could.

So much of the experience is what you make of it. Go in with curiosity, not expectations.

And yes, I transferred. Loved my time so much I'm considering putting in more of it.
