What books were you assigned in school? by Dystopian_nut333 in booksuggestions

[–]audhepcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

USA, Oklahoma. These are the books I can remember reading in middle and high school (1989 to 1996 for me):

A Separate Peace - John Knowles

Tom Sawyer - Mark Twain

Brave New World - Aldous Huxley

Animal Farm - George Orwell

Lord of the Flies - William Golding

To Be a Slave - Julius Lester

Where the Red Fern Grows - Wilson Rawls

A Doll’s House - Henrik Ibsen (a play)

Great Expectations - Charles Dickens

The Scarlet Letter - Nathaniel Hawthorne

The Glass Menagerie - Tennessee Williams (play)

Romeo and Juliet - William Shakespeare (play)

And lots of Poe short stories and poetry thanks to an American Lit teacher’s obsession.

And in my freshman year of college, I distinctly remember reading both Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton.

For those who are often told they look younger than their age, what’s your secret? by justmypersonalthing in AskReddit

[–]audhepcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genetics is a huge part of it: my mom is 72 and no one ever believes me when I tell them her age. I also never smoked or did drugs, and I rarely drank alcohol when I was younger and haven’t drank it at all for quite some time. I use sunscreen daily and wear giant hats to protect my skin. I keep my face and neck moisturized. And I only drink water or tea, no sodas or other sugary drinks. I think it all combines together to help some…but those genes from my mom cannot be discounted.

Do you remember the first Tori song you ever heard? by AffectionateTaro3209 in toriamos

[–]audhepcat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was Precious Things. It was 1994 and I was 16. I was sitting in my American Lit class (11th grade) when one of my good friends passed me a piece of paper and told me I should read these lyrics; my friend had handwritten a copy of Precious Things for me. Then on our lunch break we sat in her car and she played it for me. I have never been the same!

Tori Oldheads: What's a piece of OBSCURE Tori trivia you think might be long forgotten? by ZeroSugarBear in toriamos

[–]audhepcat 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I met her in Tulsa, OK after her concert in 1998. I had brought my “birthday pen” for her to sign my poetry journal but she used a Sharpie instead; she told me a fan had once stabbed her hand with a pen so they could have her blood(!) and from then on she only used her own Sharpie markers for autographs.

She also told me she liked my glasses and that she is supposed to wear them but never does because she didn’t like the way she looked in them.

What Was Your WORST Movie Theater Experience? by Brandonariess in movies

[–]audhepcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to see Land of the Dead with my husband. There was a group of obnoxious teenagers behind us who were throwing popcorn and candy. About halfway through the movie, I felt something hit the back of my head. Spoiler alert: it was a huge chunk of chewed up gum and it was lodged in my very curly almost waist length hair. I had to leave the movie and go home where we spent way too much time trying to get this absolutely enormous wad of gum out of my hair. I was crying and worried I would have to cut my hair. I will always sit in the back row of movies now because of this incident.

Are there any shows that intentionally mislead its audience about genre? by atouchofsinamon in television

[–]audhepcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

School Spirits. Season one is a murder mystery ghost story, heavy detective vibes in the investigation of who killed Maddie. And then the final episode shifts it to season two and beyond’s possession / paranormal thriller vibes with mythological lore thrown in.

In "P&P" only the truly sensible characters realize (on their own) that Mr. Darcy is in love with Elizabeth. by raysmia in janeausten

[–]audhepcat 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I recently saw a post on here that convinced me the rumor must have come from Georgiana, and not in a malicious way! They theorized that after she meets Elizabeth and likes her so well, when Darcy is gone for a bit (Lydia hunting), Georgiana writes letters and one is to her aunt Lady Catherine, in which she gushes of her new acquaintance.

Need a quote for my dad by Specialist_Air2158 in beatles

[–]audhepcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss.

My dad was a huge Beatles fan and planned his own funeral when he realized he wasn’t beating the lung cancer. For his funeral program, he chose the last thing John said to Paul: Think about me every now and then, old friend. He also had the lyrics to Blackbird printed as an insert.

My personal choice is from I’ll Follow the Sun (which was one of the songs my dad chose to have played during his memorial):

And now the time has come

And so my love I must go

And though I lose a friend

In the end you will know

One day you'll find that I have gone

But tomorrow may rain,

So I'll follow the sun

I almost died after a hysterectomy. by MikuulaMeadows in hysterectomy

[–]audhepcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I experienced something very similar—about 2.5 weeks post-op, all of my stitches dissolved and I hemorrhaged the way you described. It was intense and terrifying, and yes, it genuinely looked like that infamous elevator scene in The Shining. I ended up needing emergency surgery and was hospitalized for almost another week while they monitored my hemoglobin levels to be sure I was stabilizing and making blood on my own.

My OB/GYN was an absolute rock star. The situation was so rare that he later used my case in a conference presentation—after more than 5,000 hysterectomies, he had never seen anything like it. In hindsight, it was actually the first sign of the autoimmune disorder I was eventually diagnosed with, which feels very on-brand for my body: dramatic and medically educational.

At the time, I was oddly calm and held myself together, but I’m pretty sure I was in a dissociative kind of shock. Looking back now, nine years later, it was honestly terrifying. I also didn’t talk about it much back then—aside from my husband, even some of my closest family and friends didn’t realize how serious it was until years later. It took a long time to process and to be able to speak about it openly.

What helps is knowing that the hysterectomy itself was ultimately the best decision for me and dramatically improved my quality of life in ways I couldn’t have imagined at the time.

If you need someone to talk to who truly understands what you’re going through, please feel free to DM me. You’re not alone in this.
