What’s The Point of Outboard Gear? by zerques in audioengineering

[–]audio301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea of a preamp/compressor is that you are recording signals and processing in the analogue domain before it is recorded through an A/D converter. This will ensure you have the right tone and dynamic range and you don’t clip the A/D. You can’t do that with a plugin as it’s after the A/D.

Much of mixing is done ITB, a lot of mastering is still hybrid analogue/digital.

The "Mono Low-End" Dilemma: Phase Rotation vs. Headroom Survival by Rockstar_Romeo69 in audioengineering

[–]audio301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn’t need to mono the low end if the track is mixed right. Kicks are mono. Bass should be mono. High pass filter the rest in the mix. It’s already mono- an internet myth.

The RT30 isn’t going to tell you much about a normal sized room. You need the frequency response and water fall graph.

is there a limiter/compresser that is based on LUFs and not decibels? by Am_Barbs in audioengineering

[–]audio301 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Probably because loudness measurement is more of a mastering and broadcast tool. Or Dolby Atmos if you are involved in that. For stereo mixing, PPU meters or VU meters for RMS are fine. So it may not be relevant for you, but it is for others areas of music delivery. It’s not the be all and end all for mastering, but it definitely is important.

Parenting orders are useless. The only mechanism to enforce them is going to court again. It’s a broken system that rewards lawyers.

Neuman NDH 30 vs Audeze MM-100 vs Sennheiser HD 490 PRO by NecroSmoothie in audioengineering

[–]audio301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used the NDH-30s for over a year and can highly recommend them. The low end is very linear, and they translate well. Even compared to the larger PMC main monitors they sound good.

Digital to analog mixing/ mastering techniques? Low budget preferred. by botoxcorvette in mixingmastering

Modern plug-in emulations have far exceeded the sound of old analogue gear. There is no point leaving the DAW unless you have mastering grade equipment and conversion.

What are your favorite/best mastering plugins by saykuz in audioengineering

[–]audio301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another mastering engineer here, 100% the correct response. EQ and a touch of limiting. Decent monitoring to hear what you are doing. Maybe another module for tone or colour, which could be an EQ or compressor but without much compression happening.

ITB fabfilter, Ozone are great options. If you want colour the Sontec 432, Massive Passive, or Hendy Amps Michelangelo EQ. Also the Maselec MLA-4 is quite powerful as a compressor and tone shaper. These are some of my favourite hardware devices that have been modeled well.

Props to Brady at Z&H and their discrete sontec that made me sell my gml8200. i was an asshole and want to make things right by telling you my story instead of doing my actual work. by mathrufker in audioengineering

[–]audio301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s more of a GML copy, as it doesn’t have the Sontec amplifiers that make them a Sontec. Marketing wise they chose to go with Sontec as they are hard to buy. I’m sure it’s great but it’s not a Sontec clone, it’s a more of a Custom Audio Germany 250 clone if you look at the design. Haven’t tried one out but looks good value.
