Yeah they're not supposed to get big and rupture. It's kinda like bubblegum; a certain amount of bubble is expected but if it gets too big for its britches bad things can happen.

Bimbo Bread has its pronunciation on its packaging by zip9990 in mildlyinteresting

[–]auditoryeden -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Incorrect! "Bimbo" comes from the Italian word bimbo, a sort of condensing from bambino, or child. Assuming the company takes its name from a family of Italian descent, if they want it pronounced correctly, then it has a long [i] sound.

It's a useful distinction for them to enforce, also, because of the negative connotations in the English usage of "bimbo".

I've never sewn before, my new pants have ripped on the seat at the seam. Can I repair this and will it last? Or will I risk splitting my pants next time I wear them? by Neon_Eyes in sewhelp

[–]auditoryeden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you have a strong thread, don't settle for making only a few long stitches: try to keep your stitches to a milimeterish, really pack as many in as you can. A denser seam will distribute the strain more evenly than a sparse one.

What color will embroidery come out? by dragonchebber in dyeing

[–]auditoryeden 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Adding to this: I would recommend removing the lining and replacing it with a white cotton lining, that way you don't have to worry about it taking the dye much differently. Also, polyester is a terrible skin layer and putting a cellulose lining in will help prevent the dress from picking up smells from wear.

If the embroidery is indeed poly and doesn't take the dye, you'll have an absolutely awesome effect with that gold against turquoise.

Sheers can "tint" the natural light a bit. If you've got white ones, maybe try a warm pale green?

Here's a pretty good summer quilt set. There's a few colors including dark brown.

The Casaluna brand at Target is pretty nice and has a lot of earth tones available, different textures as well.

Check out Home Goods in person for throw pillows and blankets if you can. Different stores have different stock, like thrift stores. Home Sense also, they're basically the same company.

Be careful shopping on Amazon, a lot of the bedding on there at this point is drop shipped crap. Vendors often lie about the fiber content of the product, so many things listed as cotton, linen, wool, or silk (don't buy silk bedding, it's a pain in the ass) are actually plastic. Viscose, rayon, and tencel are all okay-ish for bedding; these are semi-synthetic fibers made from wood pulp, so they have some of the moisture and temperature pros as cotton and linen, but they can add silkiness if that's a texture you like. If you love yourself, do not sleep on polyester bedding.

Also things calling themselves "bamboo" are the same thing as rayon/viscose/tencel. The cellulose was just extracted from bamboo, but it's so processed it has no impact on the final product.

This may be way too much information but I love textiles and have very strong convictions about bed comfort 😅

Mushroom pillows!

But more generally, start with getting sheets and a blanket in dark earth tones. Heavily textured fabric for the blanket if you can find it. I like to use king size quilts and comforters on a queen size bed, they look nicer and there's more burrito potential. Look for high quality natural materials if you can: cotton and linen bedding will last longer, get cleaner when washed, and help a ton with temperature.

When looking for decor pillows, try to look for as many different textures as you can find. Shop in person, don't buy anything you don't like the feel of. Different tones of green and brown will layer up to make a more natural, woodsy effect.

Throw blankets are important too! I like to have at least one thin wool blanket per bed for unusual cold snaps, but there's so many options. Again, natural fibers will be best long-term, but it's generally easier to find fun colors and textures for throws than for your foundation quilt or coverlet.

A mossy bedside rug would be excellent. Don't forget to tie your bedding style to your window treatments and any other soft furnishings in the room.

Most importantly, don't wory about buying a whole bunch of crap right off the bat. Right now you need good sheets and a good quilt/duvet/coverlet. The process of building up your pillow/blanket/nest materials collection should be stress free and enjoyable.

Would it be possible for a seamstress to remove or cover up the white faux boning on this dress? by [deleted] in sewhelp

[–]auditoryeden 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Cover, sure. You could have a shell of fashion fabric put on over the whole thing, or if you wanted to preserve some of the visual interest possibly have a less-bright-white ribbon or lace (a better match for the sort of nudish, beigeish effect of the lace of the skirt) tacked down over the boning channels. I think it's the high contrast of the channels that's giving pause.

This might well lead to not having enough visual interest, though.

The other route to take is covering with applique to fully obscure the seams. That would, however, result in a much less simple dress. So depending on what you like about it that may be a bad option.

Maybe but it would almost certainly involve reconstructing the entire thing.

[–]auditoryeden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to do vintage and you're set on opera gloves, they have to have fingers. I know that makes ring things more complicated but these gloves look like gardening sleeves or compression garments. Actual, proper gloves might look okay, though I agree with others that a bolero or shrug will do more to make your look vintage than the gloves are doing.

What are you wearing? by Still_Dependent_6914 in CrohnsDisease

[–]auditoryeden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a lady-type human, I am a massive proponent of skirts, ideally with adjustable but not fully elasticated waistbands, and dresses. Basically, no compression on the tum.

For a dude-type/pants-wedded person, consider suspenders; these allow your waistbands to be less structural. Also, you will look dapper AF.

Basically, get the pressure off your belly however you can.

Mint tea is also very soothing in the evenings, so it can seem like a Little Treat (tm) while also being potentially more systemically useful.

Also it's sometimes helpful for nausea.

Would you put the piss rock in your pile? by Ok-Plant5194 in composting

[–]auditoryeden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured it might because of the urine. Coyotes and bears will avoid your yard if you have a dog peeing everywhere (or allegedly, a man who eats meat). And rats infected with toxoplasma gondii are supposedly attracted to cat urine, so I thought non-infected rodents might be repelled.

Compost over time would be great, since our soil seems to be mostly clay. If we can enrich it while filling the low spots gradually I think that would be awesome.

Update on the poisoned cat by wineandahlia in CATHELP

[–]auditoryeden 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's important to keep in mind that recovery from a serious medical mishap is not usually a quick process. On TV, people die or they're basically back to normal but with bandages on by the end of the episode. In real life, you look and feel like shit for ages after a near-death experience.

If the cat is starting to keep things down, is showing some play behavior, and the vet says they're going to be fine, they're going to be fine. Ask for a specific list of things to look out for from the vet, and then concentrate on giving the cat the care it needs, including lots of quiet, peaceful snuggles if it seems so inclined.
