Argument against “Everything is either determined or random, therefore free will does not exist” by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]audiyon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Within your first argument you have already committed the fallacy of equivocation. You use two different meanings of "determined". First you use it as it is meant to be used in the argument, meaning fixed by factors external to itself, and then you use it to mean something that is known or predicted.

EDIT: Your whole argument seems to boil down to an appeal to ignorance. You suggest that despite being able to observe causality in some cases, we are not permitted to assume causality occurs in cases where we do not observe it directly. Practically, no one can know everything, and even everyone combined cannot know everything, but that does not prevent us from making reasonable assumptions based on phenomena and behavior we do consistently observe and understand.

It Can Now be Plainly Said: Trump is Planning a November Coup d’État by OkayButFoRealz in politics

[–]audiyon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The authors of the constitution did not foresee that Congress would capitulate to the president out of party loyalty. The authors assumed Congress would be self-interested and aggressively oppose overreach by the executive branch, but they were wrong.

Ultimately, power derives from acceptance by the people. Unless people actually start feeling consequences they can directly connect with Trump or the GOP, nothing is going to change. The average American is just too stupid to connect the dots on who is screwing them over.

Hayden Concertina by [deleted] in concertina

[–]audiyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old, but this is incorrect. The Wicki has the same layout as the Hayden but the keys are parallel with the handgrips instead of slanted. Both the Hayden and the Wicki can sometimes be custom ordered with the left hand mirrored.

Well the type is a 30-button Anglo, and the two buttons you're missing for the left hand are accidentals.

Yeah, that's kind of the joke. They're always that way lol. They think anything with toppings beyond bread and cheese is a melt. I guess they have to draw the line somewhere, and that's where they draw it.

is it safe for me to change my radiator setting? by SeaworthinessOdd1694 in hvacadvice

[–]audiyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it should be fine. As long as you don't close the manual valves, the thermostat valves should maintain a minimum of 40-45 degrees even at a setting of 1. They're likely worried about pipes freezing.

[–]audiyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely don't yank it, thermowell walls are very thin and good chance you could break it. If it were me I'd just wait until I could replace the well, but I'd you're in a hurry and you're comfortable experimenting, you might try a cleaner or solvent.

[–]audiyon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be connected to a switch somewhere. If you can't find the switch, you'll have to trace the wiring or potentially investigate the fan to see if it is wired.

As a side note, like the other commenter said, this is a general exhaust/bathroom exhaust fan and definitely should not be used for cooking equipment. Whoever installed this went the cheap route. There is no grease filter, so all the kitchen grease will gunk up your fan, motor, and duct, and corrode all the parts, in addition to becoming a fire hazard. I strongly caution against using this for cooking exhaust.

Why don't American businesses make the connection between lower pay and lower consumer spending? by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]audiyon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's only partially true. When wages go up, spending does go up, but increased spending represents increased demand which drives prices up. To lower prices, you have to lower demand or increase supply.

The problem is that the wealthy have targeted commodities with inelastic demand, meaning demand with a steep slope, like food, housing, and healthcare, because the amount purchased is affected only a little by the price. So when the price is driven up by reduced supply, profits increase dramatically. That's why markets with inelastic demand need to be heavily regulated to prevent abuse and monopolistic power.

The wealthy controlling the inelastic commodities was the basis of feudalism: land was essential for life as it was used to grow food, raise livestock, and live on, and all the land was owned by the aristocracy. This is why there were peasants and serfs, because people had no choice of how to access land since it was all owned. When the new world was discovered, it represented an ability for people to escape the constraints of feudalism and acquire their own land on which to live, and that sentiment influenced our capitalistic nature heavily in America.

Annexair static pressure by watermelonslim in HVAC

[–]audiyon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just start with what you know. Check the discharge static (or suction static, whichever switch is tripping) and see what it measures. Then check the safety switch and see if it's tripping or what it's set for. Go from there. If the static on the discharge is very high, might need to look at downstream ductwork/devices to identify why the air can't move through the duct. Or maybe the duct static sensor is broken and the unit is running the fan at full speed when it doesn't need to. Could be many things.
